Which Escalade is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Cadillac Escalade. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 6.2L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 16 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylDiesel | 4WD, RWD | 22–23 mpg |
- The 2024 Cadillac Escalade was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Escalade that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Engine failure, metal in oil

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Cadillac Escalade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine34No crashes
Sudden, total loss of power is the main failure, often at highway speed and usually with no warning light. Reports describe a knocking or ticking noise, a "press start button" message, then a shift into neutral and a dead stop. Dealers find metal shavings or silver-colored oil and often replace the whole engine. Failures appear from 6,232 to 41,000 miles. Drivers get stranded in live traffic, some with near-collisions. Some stalled vehicles cannot be shifted out of park for towing, and owners report backordered engines and long waits.
Most reports here are about delay, not breakdowns. Owners received an engine recall notice, but dealers say the parts for the repair are not yet available, and several owners say the wait has gone on too long. A smaller share describe real failures: the engine shuts off while stopped and will not restart, or the check engine light comes on and the dealer finds metal shavings in the oil. In one case the engine seized. Repeated power loss and long repair attempts also come up.
Transmission7No crashes
Power cuts out completely at highway speed. The vehicle shuts off, shifts itself into neutral, and will not restart, leaving drivers to coast across lanes to a shoulder. Dealers confirm internal engine failure with metal debris in the oil. Reported mileages include 6,700 and 19,440. Some trucks then lock in park, and the electric parking brake keeps engaging while tow operators try to load them. One report follows a coffee spill on the center console. Shifter warnings appeared, and the vehicle slowed hard into park, then rolled while idling.
Electrical5No crashes
Electronic faults trigger unexpected braking and gear changes. In one report, the electric parking brake engaged while the vehicle was moving and caused an injury. A drink spilled on the center console sets off flashing gauges and shifter warnings, and the vehicle can slam to a stop and then roll on its own. Other trucks announce "Going into Neutral" at highway speed, around 7,000 miles in one case, and then will not restart or leave park. Owners also describe total power loss at startup, an intermittent backup camera, water in the trunk, and safety braking that does not work.
Brakes3No crashes
Braking fails or a "Brake System Failure" warning appears, sometimes within months of purchase. Dealers diagnose an internal fault in the brake master cylinder and replace it, and one failure came at 4,209 miles. Another pattern involves the electronic brake control module. ABS, brake, engine, and traction control lights come on together, the vehicle does not brake properly, and it has to be towed. Owners describe near-misses while the car was moving and slow responses from the manufacturer.
Wheels and tires21 crash
A rear wheel came completely off while driving, after the owner felt a vibration at the rear. The wheel crossed a four-lane highway, and the report is listed as crash-related. The second complaint is not about a wheel failure. That owner says the dealer did not complete recall repairs for engine and brake problems. With 2 complaints, this is a single serious incident rather than a broad pattern, but a detached wheel at speed is a major loss-of-control risk.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Escalade owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Engine failure. Started making a knocking noise on road with my whole family in the car, no lights or warnings on dash and had to pull over and get it towed to nearest dealer. Took a week to get a diagnostic done. Dealer found metal shavings in oil filter believe to be from a connecting rod bearing. Recall 252494000 was done 2,000 miles prior to engine failure. Now dealer must replace engine assembly, engine oil cooler and radiator all due to contamination
Filed with NHTSA, November 2025
While traveling 65 mph on a highway the car turned itself off and shifted into neutral. I was able to make it to the side of the road nearly avoiding a high speed accident. The car was placed in park and restarted. Less than five minutes later it did the exact same thing again. This time forcing me to come to a complete stop on a highway in a construction zone. The vehicle is only a few months old with 9k miles on it.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2025
The car started with a rough idle and a check engine light. It was also louder than normal. Driving down the main road approaching a light on the brakes. the light turned green and when I went to hit the gas the car died in the middle of the road. Car would not restart. OBD code P0016 The car is currently at Cadillac service
Filed with NHTSA, April 2025
Clicking that the dealer stated was normal. It was not loud knocking saying that is how the high flow fuel pump worked. Safety braking did not work at all. And there was a water intrusion in the trunk.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.
Risk: Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV vehicles. The electronic brake control module software may fail to display a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems.".
Risk: Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024. Owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N242447990.
