Which Malibu is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 4-cylFWD32 mpg
2.0L 4-cylFWD26 mpg
  • The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Malibu that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission47No crashes

A false "Shift to Park" message is the dominant complaint. The shifter sits in Park, yet the car beeps, refuses to fully shut off, and in some reports keeps the electrical system awake, draining the battery or stopping the doors from locking. Reports run from about 20000 to 113,000 miles, and several owners paid for a shifter assembly after warranty claims were denied. A smaller group describes sudden power loss, hard shifts, and transmissions failing with metal debris in the fluid near 106,000 miles.

  • Electrical36No crashes

The stuck "Shift to Park" warning shows up here too. Owners wiggle the shifter for minutes before the car will turn off, and some are told to set the parking brake as a precaution. The more dangerous reports involve a failing brake vacuum pump that leaves the pedal rock hard, often alongside a reduced engine power message that drops speed to 20 mph or less. Others describe battery charging warnings, low voltage, and the car shutting down on the freeway.

  • Brakes213 crashes

Brake vacuum pump failure dominates this category. The pedal turns rock hard or goes to the floor, sometimes at highway speed, and drivers resort to the parking brake or swerve off the road. This category includes 3 crashes and 3 injuries. Failures appear from about 40,000 to 85,193 miles, sometimes with code P0556 or a check engine light. In several cases the pump breaks apart, damages the camshaft, and sends metal into the engine, with repair quotes of $10,000 to $12,000. Some owners have replaced the pump more than once.

  • Engine15No crashes

Sudden loss of power at highway speed is the main pattern, often while passing a truck. The car shows reduced engine power, lights the check engine and traction lamps, and may not exceed 25 mph. Some problems begin within the first few thousand miles. Dealers often cannot find a cause, and repairs including a throttle body, cylinder work, and injectors do not always stop the problem. Other reports describe stalling, a mass air flow code, and vacuum pump failures that broke the camshaft.

  • Steering13No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out, usually together with Service ESC, check engine, and other warning lights. In many reports the car slows sharply or shuts off while moving, leaving a heavy wheel at highway speed. Some describe gauges going dead or jumping, and the car braking hard on its own after losing communication with the brake control module. Dealers often cannot duplicate the fault, and repeat visits bring new codes without a lasting fix.

  • Acceleration and cruise control7No crashes

The car loses power with little or no warning and won't respond to the gas pedal, in some cases crawling at 5 mph in traffic. A Service ESC or flashing check engine light often comes on, and power may return after about 30 seconds. One pattern starts near 19,500 miles under hard acceleration and then spreads to steady cruising. One report describes the opposite: the dash going blank and the car accelerating on its own. Dealers rarely reproduce the problem.

  • Airbags44 crashes

All 4 complaints involve crashes, with 3 injuries. One describes air bags that did not deploy when the car hit a guardrail. Two describe the steering wheel air bag failing violently, with metal parts breaking off the wheel. One of those caused severe jaw injuries, and the other was filed on behalf of a driver who later died. A fourth owner says the car was sold without air bags. The count is small, but the outcomes are severe.

  • Suspension21 crash

Worn front-end parts and transmission snatching make up these two filings, which show no clear design pattern. One buyer of an as-is car from a small used lot says it needed axles, a ball joint, and a lower control arm soon after purchase. The other reports struts and rear shocks needing replacement at 32,200 miles, plus a transmission that snatches in drive and reverse, none of it covered by warranty.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Malibu owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Shift to park issue . When the car is shifted to park, the system does not recognize the car is in park mode even though the stick is in Park. It starts beeping and that dash board screen shows SHIFT to PARK. It happened several times in October 2024. The dealer says it does not cover under the warranty and it has on 20000 miles and bought in 2021.

Transmission
Car is indicating "Shift to Park" after placing in park and turning off. Unable to lock vehicle. Lights remain on. Took vehicle to dealer though it's a widely known issue I will be required to pay? Transmission was replaced at 35K due to manufacturing defect. Every 20k miles I'm going to have more transmission issues? It's just not right!

Electrical
The problems listed in my vehicle are the following • U0073: Control Module Communication Bus A Off • U0100: Lost Communication With Engine Control Module • U0121: Lost Communication with Electronic Brake Control Module • U0140: Lost Communication With Body Control Module • P0700: Transmission Control Module Requested MIL Illumination I believe this is due to a bad design in the wiring. Also the electric brake vacuum broke which is a common problem.

Electrical
My car would completely shut off in the middle of traffics and restart right away. The lights would completely restart, the driver panel, the radio screen, and ESC service light would come on interchangeably with the service engine light. When I would park my car overnight then start it up, the engine won’t start. Then the batter saver mode gets turned on, I’d wait 10 minutes then turn on the car and it works.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2022

Brakes
Brake vacuum pump locked up causing camshaft to twist and reluctant wheel to turn which damaged the engine. I'm being quoted $10,000 to fix which was actually $1,000 more to fix but they accidentally under quoted me and have to honor the original estimate. I don't have that kind of money and still owe almost $14,000 on the car.

Brakes
My car has been malfunctioning it keeps saying shift to park when it’s park and it show esc system issue and then the brakes stop working it has been going on and off took it to Lou bachrodt Chevrolet and they couldn’t fix the issue. I have done research online and it shows the same

Engine

The vehicle would not drive over 25 miles an hour putting all occupants in the car at risk. The dealership repaired the vehicle The same loss of engine power re-occurred on 3/12/22 while driving at over 50 miles an hour. the car just slowed without warning, and I was unable to increase speed on a busy roadway

Engine
Reduce engine power warming lamp. Cars just suddenly loses power when driving at high rate of speed. Car slows abs f won’t go over 2ph causing hazardous situations and endangering occupants and other drivers. This issue has been repaired twice abs is now the third time.

Where the 2020 fits in the Malibu's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the fifth model year of the Malibu's ninth generation (2016 on).

Chevrolet updated the Malibu for 2024, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2020)

  • Final year of production in the US.
  • End of sales in the US.
  • No immediate successor announced.
