Which Malibu is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylGas | FWD | 32 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | FWD | 26 mpg |
| 1.8L 4-cylHybrid | FWD | 46 mpg |
- The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Malibu that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
False Shift to Park message
13,500–55,000 miles
Sudden loss of engine power
40,000–53,713 miles
Transmission failure
109,330–114,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission59No crashes
Acceleration cuts out or lags, often when pulling away from a stop or merging onto a highway. Owners describe the car crawling for several seconds, jerking, or revving high before it surges ahead. Dealers often cannot reproduce the problem. A few reports describe the transmission worn out at 109,330 to 114,000 miles, with rebuilt units quoted at $3500 and up. The second big pattern is a false "Shift to Park" message: the car is in Park but will not register it or shut off. Some owners say the engine stalls in gear.
Electrical502 crashes
A false "Shift to Park" message dominates these reports. The engine will not shut off, the doors will not lock, and lights stay on and drain the battery. Owners cite GM service bulletin 19-NA-206, and one dealer replaced the shifter assembly and pigtail for over $700. Failures show up as early as about 13,500 miles. Other reports describe stalling at lights tied to auto stop, reduced engine power, and a failed fuel pump. One fire started in the driver door wiring. The injury crash involved CarPlay in a different GM vehicle.
Engine211 crash
Sudden power loss hits with a check engine light and a "reduced engine power" warning, sometimes at highway speed. Owners report camshaft actuator and phaser codes, rough running, and stalling. One engine was replaced at about 52,000 miles and the problem came back. Another pattern is the intake hose or turbo charge pipe popping off the throttle body, which kills power. A crash with one injury followed an auto stop restart that revved the engine and surged the car forward while the brake was held. Some cars would not shut off.
Brakes142 crashes
The brake vacuum pump fails without warning. The pedal turns hard and stopping distances grow, and two cars ended up in ditches. Failure often comes with reduced engine power, codes P0014, P0017 and P0556, and a car that will not restart. Several shops say pump debris damaged the camshaft or the whole engine, and some quoted full engine replacement. One repair of the pump and camshaft cost 1700. Owners cite service bulletin 21-NA-268. One report notes failure at 60,000 miles. A separate complaint describes rear calipers that keep hanging up.
Acceleration and cruise control4No crashes
Power drops without warning, often with no warning lights on. Owners describe pressing the accelerator and getting a slow, delayed response at stop lights and in turns. One car stalled at 10 mph at about 53,713 miles. The dealer did not diagnose or repair it. One report here is really the false "Shift to Park" problem: the car would not shut off for about 30 minutes. The dealer called it common and charged $400 to fix it. Only 4 complaints fall in this category, so patterns are thin.
Airbags3No crashes
Airbag and restraint warning lights come on, usually alongside other faults rather than from an airbag failure itself. One car stalled repeatedly with airbag, check engine, and ABS lights lit, and neither shop could reproduce it. Another lost power when the intake hose blew off the throttle body, and the dealer replaced the throttle body and the airbag clock spring. A third owner reports the restraint warning going off repeatedly. No deployment failures or injuries are reported in this category.
Steering2No crashes
The car shudders and pulls under braking. In one case the brakes grabbed at about 30 mph and the car jerked left. Check engine, stability, power steering, and ESC lights came on. Another owner reports the wheels pushing to one side on the freeway and the steering wheel shaking when slowing or braking. The front lug nuts had to be retightened, and the problem came back days later. With only 2 complaints, there is no clear pattern.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Malibu owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
While driving on the highway my car started loosing power. A warning light came on stating Engine Power is reduced. I could not excelerate had to pull over on side of road. This is the first time this has happened to me but I just purchased this vehicle on 7/15/21 with 51,000 miles.

Put car in Park but Message center says Shift to Park. Also engine tuns off but car switch is still on. Contacted Chevy but advisors basically said sorry. Only 28500 miles on vehicle and one owner

Check engine light lit up on the dashboard. Did not go away, took car to dealership next day. Turns out that the fuel pump system (P & A Fuel Pump & Sending System) was faulty and also needed an ECM update to the programming system. The fuel pump breaking down confuses me because the car will only be 4 yrs old at the end of May, with only a little bit over 31,000 miles on it. This system should not have needed replacing this soon in the cars usage.

SERVICE ESC flashed on my dashboard along with the car jerking when braking. Car has not been abused as this a new development. Check engine light stays on. Service ESC and LOW FUEL appear at the same time the brake jerk happens. Car has less than 50k miles despite being used everyday. Car does not perform accurately with the ESC not working.

Where the 2019 fits in the Malibu's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2019 is the fourth model year of the Malibu's ninth generation (2016 on).
Chevrolet updated the Malibu for 2024, so a 2019 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2019)
- Final year of production in the US.
- End of sales in the US.
- No immediate successor announced.
