Which Optima is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Kia Optima. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L 4-cylGas | FWD | 31 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | FWD | 24 mpg |
| 2.4L 4-cylGas | FWD | 29 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylHybrid | FWD | 41 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | FWD | 610 mi range |
- The 2019 Kia Optima was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Optima that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Kia Optima, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine58No crashes
Oil disappears between changes with no visible leak. This is the dominant pattern, and most reports cluster around 92,000 to 107,000 miles. Owners describe the oil light flickering while driving, dipsticks nearly dry well before the next change, oil-fouled spark plugs, misfires, limp mode, and stalling in traffic. Shops often recommend a new engine or long block. Owners just past warranty coverage say Kia declined to pay. Two complaints describe engine fires, one in a car whose engine had already been replaced.
Electrical18No crashes
Fires are the most serious issue here. Three reports describe smoke and then flames from under the hood, one shortly after the car was parked, with no warning lights beforehand. Burned cars were totaled. More often, the check engine light flashes, the car shakes and loses power, and dealers point to the ECU. Some cars light up with ABS, traction, and collision warnings at once, then stop in traffic or lock the steering. Other complaints cover USB connections that drop, repeated battery failures, and A/C electrical faults.
Transmission16No crashes
Heavy oil burning with shaking, misfires, and oil-coated spark plugs and coil packs leads this category, usually past 100,000 miles. Some cars stall or fall into limp mode repeatedly despite several dealer visits. Others develop engine knocking or fail outright, with metal shavings found in the oil. Transmission complaints include shudder when pulling away from a stop, repeated dual-clutch replacements, and a car that lunges forward instead of engaging reverse on a downhill. One owner reports harsh, clunky downshifts after an engine software update.
Body and structure13No crashes
Snow White Pearl paint bubbles, chips, and flakes off without any impact, usually starting on the hood, trunk, or roof. Small spots spread across the body and expose primer or bare metal, and one owner reports rust. Onset ranges from about 34,000 miles to 100,000. Owners say dealers and Kia refuse repaint requests because the paint warranty has ended. A separate complaint says a skid plate screw can puncture the oil pan, draining the oil and risking a seized engine.
Airbags129 crashes
Airbags fail to deploy in serious crashes. Reports include head-on impacts with a pole and a parked car, side impacts at intersections, and a highway rear-end collision. Of 12 complaints, 9 involve crashes, and 11 people were injured, with a fractured sternum, a concussion, and neck and back injuries among them. Other owners see the airbag warning light come on with a passenger airbag circuit fault. One owner's car sat parked for months waiting on a backordered passenger airbag module.
Brakes124 crashes
The brake pedal sinks to the floor or the brakes fail to engage, and several drivers hit guardrails, poles, or other vehicles. Other complaints describe the opposite problem: the car brakes hard on its own with nothing ahead, often after forward collision, blind spot, ABS, and traction warnings appear. One dealer traced these warnings to a rear wheel speed sensor at about 20,000 miles. Dealers sometimes find nothing wrong. Four reports involve crashes, with 3 injuries.
Automatic emergency braking105 crashes
Automatic emergency braking activates with nothing ahead, at highway speed or mid-turn, and in one case caused a rear-end crash that totaled the car. Other drivers report the system failing to brake on ice or showing a blocked-sensor warning before a crash. Warning lights also come on at startup. Dealers blame a sensor obstruction or a failing hydraulic control unit, or cannot reproduce the fault. Five of the 10 complaints involve crashes, with one injury.
Acceleration and cruise control61 crash
The car hesitates or fails to accelerate, sometimes with a flashing check engine light, and can stall while merging. Several cases start early, at 8,801 and 15,000 miles. One dealer replaced a knock sensor harness, while another could not duplicate the problem. On one hill, the brakes grabbed and locked, and the car rolled backward while in drive. Another owner needs new spark plugs and coils every 4 to 6 months because of oil burning. One crash report describes brakes locking and the car leaving the road.

My 2019 Kia Optim is starting to consume oil every 15 miles this is a problem that Kia have with thousands of 2019, 2020 and 2021 they have bad engines in them and Kia knows about the problem and refusing to do anything with the custom, you all need to make them have a recall and fix the problem with all those engines some vehicles only have 20,000 miles on them and have the same problem.

This vehicle is a lemon. It is a 2019 with 81,000 miles. How in the world does the engine start knocking when i have consistently, kept up with the maintenance on this vehicle. If i do not hear something soon im weakening legal action. Since May 18TH i have been without a car.i am a single mom and this is so difficult. Mind you it was towed July 5th from where it broke down on me.

Brought vehicle in for Recall-SC340 Theta II 2.4L GDI ECM S/W Upgrade. After service was performed I took my vehicle back home and noticed that my down shifting was different, jolty and clunky. Prior to the upgrade my vehicle shifted flawlessly. Took my vehicle back in to have them check it out and they told me that they couldn't feel it and that the upgrade wouldn't cause that. Called Kia Corporate and filed a complaint.

Engine burners oil at about 1qt per 1000 miles. There is no leak, and no repair to stop the oil from burning quickly. I have to refill my engine with oil several times in between oil changes. Paint is peeling in various spots on my hood and bumper. I first noticed a small area along the border of the hood nearest the windshield (mostly visible from the driers seat). Then 3 more spots on the opposite side of the hood and eventually all over the bumper.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2019 Optima vehicles equipped with Gamma 1.6L Turbo-GDI or Theta II 2.0L Turbo-GDI engines. A software error in the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system may cause the braking assist function to not engage when a stationary vehicle is detected.
Risk: Improper intervention of the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will update the FCA software, free of charge. The recall began August 27, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC179.
