Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Honda Ridgeline, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Exterior lights34No crashes

Automatic high beams switch erratically. They dim for reflective road signs, street lights, and porch lights on empty roads, then come back on or stay bright as oncoming cars approach. On some trucks they never turn on, even on fully dark roads. Oncoming drivers flash their lights in response, and high beams that drop out at the start of a corner leave the road ahead poorly lit. Dealers often find nothing wrong or say no fix exists, and the sensitivity can't be adjusted. A smaller group reports moisture inside a headlight, which a service bulletin covers, though repairs are billed to the owner.

  • Electrical11No crashes

The rearview camera screen goes black or nearly black in reverse. A recall replaced the tailgate wire harness, but at least one owner says the fault returned months later and could be triggered by working the dual-action tailgate a few times. Several complaints are really about recall parts being out of stock for months. Owners also report a wireless charging pad that charges for only a few seconds, voice navigation that won't understand commands, an Auto Engine Idle Stop System error that keeps returning, and erratic auto high beams. Dealers often say Honda has no repair.

  • Engine9No crashes

Power drops off suddenly and the check engine light flashes, usually when the driver exits after a long cold-weather highway run. Shutting the truck off and letting it cool restores power. One dealer blamed condensation in the intake manifold and said Honda has not solved it. Other reports describe gasoline in the oil with strong fuel odors in the cabin, a stall diagnosed as engine failure needing a replacement engine near 20,117 miles, and a knock near the main bearing at 34,000 miles. Smaller complaints cover a slow auto start/stop restart and lurching on steep grades.

  • Transmission7No crashes

After a long highway drive, often in cold weather, the check engine light flashes on the off-ramp and the truck won't accelerate or shift. It revs but tops out around 30 to 35 mph, sometimes requiring a tow. A restart usually clears it. Separately, the transmission drops into neutral while driving or at a stop and shows a "stop driving when safe" warning. Dealers have confirmed the fault and say they have no correction, and software resets haven't held. Low-speed stalling, including in an intersection, and shuddering are also reported. Several failures began within the first few thousand miles.

  • Backup camera6No crashes

None of these complaints describe a failure. All 6 concern recall campaign 24V321000 for back over prevention, where owners got the recall notice but dealers had no parts to do the repair. Owners say the wait went well past a reasonable time, and both dealers and the manufacturer confirmed the parts shortage. The issue is parts distribution, not a fault anyone has seen on the road. A shopper should still confirm the recall repair has been completed.

  • Brakes41 crash

Automatic emergency braking activates when nothing is in the way, often set off by oncoming traffic in the other lane. The dash flashes a brake warning, the steering wheel shakes, and the brakes apply. Sometimes the truck stops completely in an intersection or while crossing traffic on a left turn, leaving it exposed to a side impact. Owners say they must switch the feature off every time they start the truck. One crash report describes hesitation going uphill, brakes that failed to slow the truck, and a sudden jolt into a building.

  • Automatic emergency braking3No crashes

The collision system misreads oncoming cars on curving two-lane roads, especially right-hand curves, while both vehicles stay in their lanes. It sounds an alarm and flashes an amber brake warning, and sometimes it brakes hard, which owners compare to brake-checking the traffic behind them. It doesn't happen every time, which makes it hard to anticipate. One report describes locked brakes and a dead accelerator pedal during a merge, and the dealer found no cause. The system can be turned off, but only one drive at a time.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Doors sometimes refuse to unlock or open without significant force. It happens intermittently, and owners worry that a weaker occupant couldn't get out after a crash or fire. Other reports cover exterior parts coming loose at speed. The lower rear door trim on the passenger side flew off through the wheel well. A tonneau cover detached at 70 mph around 2,100 miles, and the dealer blamed defective mounting brackets. Honda offered to replace that cover.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Ridgeline owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Exterior lights
The auto headlights have not worked at all since we have owned this vehicle. I have followed the instructions to the letter to setup the auto headlight function up. Frustrated, vehicle was taken to dealer and they acknowledge a problem as they cannot fix it until Honda issues a repair solution. The truck has 560 miles on it. Problematic headlights are a real concern at night

Exterior lights
Vehicle is equipped with auto dimming headlights. The system is way too sensitive and dims headlights on reflected road signs and distant street lights. Honda says it is working properly. It is basically worthless and very distracting because when driving through a neighborhood with no other cars around it dims and brightens constantly. Honda says there is no way to adjust sensitivity! Previously I believe you could. 2020 Ridgelines worked perfectly?

Electrical
The automatic high beam system is terrible. It is too sensitive so the beams flash hi/low on and off. Even a small road reflector on a dark empty road will force it back to low beam. Other cars I own with this type system work much better. It’s a safety hazard because auto hi-beam is on by default and you can’t count on it providing the correct amount of lighting when on dark roads, plus it annoys oncoming drivers because of the constant flashing.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Electrical
As stated earlier, The GPS does not work properly. Its voice command system does not work. This causes the driver to manually put the information in and causes the driver to take eyes off the road. Second, the charging pad does not work. In both incidences, I am told Honda has no repair. They do not seem to care. Hundreds of other owners, of all Honda vehicles are having the same problem. A recall is needed and fines need to be accessed.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Engine
I have had toxic fuel/engine smells in the cabin from the engine compartment. There are multiple complaints when searching Honda gas cabin smell online. Located the source is the Pcv vent hose on top of the engine. Honda needs to replace this hose with an odor barrier hose that doesn’t allow the fumes to be brought into the cabin via the fresh air intake.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Engine
The auto start/stop feature has a delay before restarting the engine after full stop in traffic. This delay is dangerous. If you don't anticipate the slight delay before pressing gas pedal to move through traffic your timing is slightly impaired by this delay. All Honda vehicles seem to be experiencing this delay and are reporting and complaining about it.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Honda dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V321000Backup cameraMay 2024

Honda (America Honda Motor Co) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Ridgeline vehicles. The rearview camera (RVC) tailgate wire harness may fatigue and break, which can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying.

Risk: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the RVC tailgate wire harness, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed November 8, 2024. Owners may contact Honda service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is YI7.

  2. 24V184000SteeringMar 2024

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023 Passport and Ridgeline vehicles. The inner ball joint housing in the steering gearbox assembly may loosen and detach from the steering rack and result in a loss of steering control.

Risk: A loss of steering control increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the steering gearbox as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 11, 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is LHY.

  3. 23V458000BrakesJun 2023

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and 2020 Acura MDX vehicles. The tie rod fastener that connects the brake booster and the brake master cylinder may have been improperly assembled during manufacturing, which can cause the brake master cylinder to separate from the booster assembly.

Risk: Brake master cylinder separation can cause a loss of brake function and increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and repair the brake booster assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 7, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are VEU, AEV, and ZET.
