Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Nissan Frontier, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical5No crashes

Battery drain and electrical glitches lead this category. Reports describe the battery dying fast whether parked or driving, with warning lights for the battery, brakes, ABS and traction control, and gauges acting up even after the battery, alternator and fuses check out. Other trucks fail to start with no dash lights, then start normally later. A loose ignition switch that blocks starting needed its plastic body replaced at about 50,260 miles. Doors that lock on their own while parked and a backup camera that beeps nearly all the time in reverse also appear, with one near crash blamed on the camera.

  • Brakes3No crashes

A brake pedal that sinks almost to the floor under firm pressure is the main complaint. Drivers also say the brake and accelerator pedals sit so close that pressing the brake pushes the gas too, and the truck lunges forward. These reports come early, at 500 and 9,745 miles, and dealers say they cannot duplicate the problem on road tests. One driver describes a very close call. Separately, an inspection called for new front brakes and rotors on a truck with low mileage.

  • Suspension3No crashes

Vibration that grows worse over time is one pattern. The dealer first found nothing, and the problem was later traced to the motor mounts, with the repair refused under the powertrain warranty. Another complaint describes a squeak from the front driver side suspension that started when new, gets worse with age, and that the dealer cannot locate. In a third case, the dealer could not align the truck until it installed a kit, and the manufacturer covered half the cost.

  • Airbags2No crashes

A flashing passenger airbag warning light that will not go away is the consistent failure here. It signals that the passenger airbag may not deploy in a crash. In one truck, a dealer found the occupancy classification module installed incorrectly and not an original part. In another, the light came on around 62k miles, and two costly dealer repairs failed to fix it, with the manufacturer splitting the bills. Neither complaint reports a lasting fix.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

A cracked truck bed mount is the more serious report. The passenger side mount where the bed attaches to the frame was found cracked with a piece missing. The other complaint covers cosmetic damage: paint peeling on the front left fender and along the seams where both front fenders meet the cab. The dealer received photos of the paint damage, and no repair is described.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Sudden loss of acceleration is the shared symptom. In one truck with under 4500 miles, the rear wheels feel like they lock at 25 to 40 mph, the O/D light flashes, and the truck stops accelerating before recovering, nearly causing a rear-end crash. Repairs held for only a week. Another truck refuses to speed up and runs at idle for five or six seconds a few times a month, with no warning lights. Four dealer visits found no fault code.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

Trouble refueling is the pattern. The pump nozzle keeps shutting off as soon as fueling starts, filling the tank becomes slow and difficult, and in one case gas spits out of the filler tube onto the ground. One dealer quoted $1,600 to replace the filler tube assembly, canister filler, canister assembly, control valve assembly and evap pressure sensor. Another dealer replaced several parts, but the problem came back by the second fill-up.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

Unpredictable throttle response is the core issue, and both reports carry a crash risk. One truck has dead spots when pulling away from stops or climbing hills, then surges hard enough to chirp the tires once the transmission downshifts. Three dealer visits, including transmission and throttle body reprogramming and a new throttle body, did not cure it on a truck with just over 1000 miles. Another report describes the engine racing while stopped with a foot on the brake, which forced the occupants to shift into neutral to avoid hitting things.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Frontier owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
2018 Nissan Frontier Desert Runner... Battery inconsistently drains fast when off and while driving. Indicator lights for battery, brakes, ABS and traction control come on. Gauges malfunction. Tried another battery and still having same symptoms. Alternator and battery passed bench test. Fuses are good. Wiring harness appears to be in good condition. Grounds are tight and clean. Wondering if this problem is related to the recall on the ignition switch.

Electrical
Jan 29 2025 vehicle failed to start . Turned switch to start several times .no response at all no dash lights no starter reaction no clicking from battery, which would indicate battery problem. Waited several mins approx 30 minutes. Vehicle started and been ok for several more starts today. Suspect ignition switch ,seems many models this vehicle has problems. Mine did not show a recall?

Suspension
Squeaking sound coming from front driver side suspension. This has been happening ever since purchased in 2018 that dealer cannot find. Getting worse as it ages. Afraid tire may drive train may break while driving.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Nissan dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

  2. 18V551000ElectricalAug 2018

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017 Nissan NV200, Sentra, NV3500 Van, NV3500 Bus, NV200 Taxi, NV1500, NV2500 Van, Chevrolet City Express, 2017-2018 Frontier, Versa Note, and Versa Sedan vehicles that have a mechanical (physical) key ignition system. In these models, over time, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.

Risk: If the vehicle stalls, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the production information on the ignition switch, and replace it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
