Which GLB is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD25–27 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A GLB that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Automatic emergency braking3No crashes

Driver assistance features work inconsistently. Reports describe adaptive cruise control that sometimes fails to slow down or brake, and random speed increases past the limit the car reads from road signs, such as climbing from 35 to 50 mph. Lane control and automatic braking may or may not engage, and slowing for a turn lane is also unpredictable. These problems show up on nearly new cars, within the first 1136 miles. The main risk is the car failing to slow or brake when the driver expects it to.

  • Acceleration and cruise control21 crash

The car either surges forward or suddenly loses drive. One crash report describes unintended acceleration at about 5,000 miles while pulling into a driveway in bad weather. The car pulled right, crossed a lawn, and hit a brick wall. The air bags deployed, and the driver reported neck, back, and chest pain. A separate report describes the transmission slipping into neutral at 65 mph with a "transmission malfunction stop" message, which left steering and brakes but no acceleration. The dealer blamed a needed software update, not a hardware fault.

  • Suspension2No crashes

A suspension warning light comes on intermittently and tells the driver not to go over 50 mph. A loud creaking from the wheel area is also reported while driving, turning corners, and pulling in and out of driveways, and the dealer could not reproduce it. Rear shock problems are reported alongside other faults, including electrical trouble, a fan motor issue, a driver window that will not fully lower, and a radio that needed repair. These complaints are mostly warnings and noises that are hard to diagnose.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints GLB owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Automatic emergency braking
All advance driver assistance system has a 50% work fail reliability. It may work it may fail to work, I bought the cat from a Mercades Dealer in Las Vegas with 48 miles on it. The vehicle has approx 900 now. The driver assist system fails daily, it is unreliable, dangerous and a hazard to occupants and others. It needs to be inspected and repaired, recalled.

Where the 2022 fits in the GLB's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the third model year of the GLB's first generation (2020 on).

Mercedes-Benz updated the GLB for 2024, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2022)

  • New headlights and taillights
  • Updated MBUX infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support
  • New color: Spectral Blue Metallic
  • Option for 18 and 20-inch wheels
  • New 48-volt mild hybrid system (EQ Boost)
