Reported on other Envision years with the same design

These years share the 2023's design and most of its parts, so their problems are the ones to look for on this car too.

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Start the car and confirm the instrument cluster shows speed, gear, and warning lights with no Service Instrument Cluster message.
  • Watch the dash through a full drive for a Service Safety Restraint System message or a flickering airbag light.
  • Accelerate hard from a stop and while merging, and feel for hesitation, delayed shifts, or high RPM without matching speed.

Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Accelerate gently through 25 to 35 mph and watch for slipping, sudden drops to neutral, or a delayed lunge.
  • Let auto stop shut off the engine at a light and feel for lurching or bucking when it restarts.
  • Ask for service records showing any fuel pump or fuel pump control module diagnosis or replacement.

Which Envision is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Buick Envision. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Envision that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Buick Envision, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Unintended acceleration and transmission trouble dominate these reports. Engine RPMs climb when the driver lifts off the gas and brakes, sometimes staying high at a stop until the car goes into Park. A sudden lunge forward while parking is also reported, as early as 760 miles. Separately, the transmission jolts from a stop, slips out of gear, and triggers a check engine light, with one rebuild delayed 5 months because parts were unavailable. Surging while stopping or parking carries a clear crash risk.

  • Electrical3No crashes

Total electrical shutdown while driving is the most serious pattern. The engine quits, the dashboard goes black, and the hazard lights stop working, with no warning beforehand. That leaves the driver in traffic without power steering or brake assist. Loose battery cables and wiring harnesses were found, and moving them restored power. Another complaint covers a park assist sensor that was never installed and is still unavailable from the dealer. A third filing gives no details.

  • Brakes3No crashes

The brake pedal sinks toward the floor or stops slowing the car. Sometimes there is no warning first. Other times ABS, brake, traction control, stability control, and forward collision warnings all light up at once. Drivers describe pumping the pedal hard or shifting to neutral to coast to a stop. A related report ties a sudden loss of motive power near 40 mph to a failed ABS control module, with the car stuck at the dealer waiting for the part. These failures show up on low-mileage cars and carry a serious crash risk.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

The fuel pump control module fails and the engine loses power on the road. Reports include losing power and acceleration at about 60 mph, with a check engine light and the transmission dropping into neutral. Another describes the engine quitting with no warning lights and a tow to the dealer. In both cases the dealer called for a new module. The failures came early, between 3,130 and 7,600 miles. Losing power at highway speed is a real crash risk.

  • Lane keeping2No crashes

Side blind zone alert and rear cross traffic alert are missing on some cars because of the chip shortage. Nothing broke. The original window sticker shows a $350 credit for the deleted features. Used-car buyers say they found out only after purchase, by pulling up the sticker. Owners who were promised the features later report long waits, nine months in one case. These complaints describe missing equipment and a delayed retrofit, not a part failing.

  • Steering2No crashes

Power steering cuts out while the brakes also stop responding, usually with a cluster of warning lights including ABS, transmission, check engine, collision, and steering. Drivers describe pressing the brake pedal to the floor at low speed to stop, and a dealer traced one case to a failed brake module. Another report links a drained battery to brakes locking up and widespread electrical faults. Losing steering and braking together, even at parking-lot speeds, is a loss-of-control risk.

  • Backup camera2No crashes

Park assist does not work because the part was left out during the semiconductor shortage. Buyers were told at sale that a no-cost retrofit would follow once parts arrived. Owners report never being contacted, and Buick has directed them to file with NHTSA so the car shows as an open case in GM's warranty system. The second filing contains only a tracking number. This is a part shortage and retrofit delay, not a component breaking.

Where the 2023 fits in the Envision's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2023 is the third model year of the Envision's second generation (2021–2023).

Buick updated the Envision for 2024, so a 2023 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2023)

  • Front design changes
  • New dashboard-mounted digital displays

Recall repairs are free at any Buick dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.".

Risk: DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023.
