  • Keep the center display active for the whole test drive and watch for blackouts or freezing.
  • Start the car cold and look for a steering effort warning before driving off.

Which X3 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2026 BMW X3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD29 mpg
3.0L 6-cylAWD27 mpg
  • The 2026 BMW X3 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X3 that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2026 BMW X3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering2No crashes

Power steering fails at very low mileage, and the wheel becomes extremely hard to turn, sometimes in the middle of a turn. Reports also describe the car pulling sharply to one side without driver input and a wheel that will not return to center. Warnings for steering malfunction, chassis stabilization, reduced driver assistance, and collision mitigation can appear together. Both reports begin within the first 200 miles. The car ends up towed and undrivable, which is a real loss-of-control risk. One repair replaced the electric steering box. The other car was still waiting for a fix at the dealer.

How the 2026 compares with other X3 years
