Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2022 BMW X3. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Which X3 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 BMW X3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD, RWD24–25 mpg
3.0L 6-cylGasAWD17 mpg
3.0L 6-cylHybridAWD23 mpg
  • The 2022 BMW X3 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X3 that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 BMW X3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Body and structure11No crashes

Parts shortages make up most of this category. The bulk of reports come from owners notified of recall 24V534000 who cannot get the repair because the part is unavailable. None of them describe an actual failure. A separate pattern involves the liftgate opening by itself while driving slowly, while entering a garage, and while parked unattended. One of those cases damaged a garage door. Another report describes the sunroof glass shattering at highway speed with no impact and damaging the roof paint.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Sudden loss of power is the most serious pattern. Drivers report the car cutting acceleration at highway speed, or slowing while the pedal is pressed, with a "Drivetrain Malfunction" message. In one case at about 11,712 miles, the dealer could not reproduce the fault. One car caught fire while driving and was destroyed, and the drivetrain warning appeared only after the fire started. Other reports describe a broken rear axle at 20k miles, shuddering when stopping despite fluid changes, and a car that would not shift from neutral to drive while rolling.

  • Electrical6No crashes

These failures vary rather than cluster. The rear hatch opens on the highway with no warning. The horn sounds continuously for up to two minutes whenever a door or hatch opens. The instrument cluster cuts out at random, and forward collision and lane departure warnings go with it. A start-stop failure left one car stuck in the road because it could not be shifted to neutral. Other complaints mention the starter and a misaligned blind spot radar sensor found on a Certified Pre-Owned car.

  • Automatic emergency braking51 crash

The windshield bracket that holds the front camera warps or breaks from heat, and the camera slips out of alignment. Calibration then fails, error messages appear, and collision warnings and other driver assistance features shut off. Owners say the area around the camera gets very hot. The repair described is a full windshield replacement, and some dealers have denied the claim. In one crash, 2 people were injured and the forward collision warning never triggered. That car was a total loss.

  • Lane keeping4No crashes

The front camera bracket failure shows up here as well. Its thin plastic tabs melt, warp, or snap in sunlight and heat. Once the camera is out of alignment, lane keep assist, pedestrian braking, and other front safety systems stop working. The bracket is not sold separately, so the fix requires a new windshield. Parts waits can run 2+ months with no timeline from the dealer, and dealers have pushed back on warranty coverage. A separate report describes front sensors going off for no reason in rain and snow.

  • Airbags3No crashes

Airbags deploy with no crash or impact. The reports include side curtain airbags going off while the car is moving, and one deployment caused an injury. Another report describes a "Passenger Restraint System Malfunction" warning at startup, and that owner's extended warranty did not cover the repair. There are only three complaints, but an airbag going off at driving speed is a serious hazard.

  • Steering3No crashes

Power steering cuts out at startup, along with the speedometer, tire pressure monitoring, and stability control. A message about lost communication with the brake system control module comes up at the same time. The fault returns at random and clears after the car sits off for about an hour. Other reports describe a front thrust rod replaced at least three times, a clunk in reverse, and front tires worn out by about 15k miles. One complaint says the vehicle went out of control while driving.

  • Engine2No crashes

Smoke from under the hood turned into a fire that destroyed one car, with no dash warning lights beforehand. The driver got out before the flames spread. A second report describes the engine stalling intermittently at around 30 mph, also with no warning lights. In that case, at about 150,000 miles, the dealer could not find the cause. With only two complaints there is no broad pattern, but this fire report adds to fire reports filed under other categories for this year.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints X3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Body and structure
While driving at approximately 45 mph on Florida Highway 10 with no other cars around the sunroof suddenly shattered. There was a loud “pop” and the sound of glass hitting the top of the car. The sunroof and shade were closed at the time and most of the glass ended up in the street. There is considerable paint damage to the roof of the vehicle from the glass hitting it after shattering.

Body and structure
SUV's lift gate has opened on its own twice. Once in the garage resulting garage door damage as well as $798.00 in lift gate damage. The second time the vehicle was outside unattended.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2022

Transmission
After taking off from a stop light, heard a loud bang and after taking it to the dealer it turns out to be a broken rear right axle and diff retaining bolt. My car is a 2022 MY with 20k miles on it. This was the first time I have done a "hard launch". The car is bone stock, with no modifications whatsoever and all maintenance and repairs done at the bmw dealership. I am going after a warranty claim as this should be covered.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2023

Transmission
Transfer case fluid has been replaced as well as drivetrain fluid in the front and rear and and the car is still having slight issues shuttering when stopping.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Automatic emergency brakingCrash reported
The front collision warning failed and had not given any problem prior to the failure. We were in a car accident where a person turned left (we were going straight) and passed right in front of us when we hit them. The Forward Collision Warning did not display and our vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance. We may of avoided the accident if the sound and display of the warning had triggered.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2023

Automatic emergency braking
The clips that hold the KAFAS camera system are faulty and easily break. The KAFAS unit gets exceptionally hot and damages the clips causing the unit to go out of alignment and then cause all of the safety features to fail. The fact that you have to replace the whole windshield to repair two small plastic clips is an egregious mechanical design failure, waste of resource, and just insane design.
