Which X3 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 BMW X3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasAWD, RWD24–25 mpg
3.0L 6-cylGasAWD17 mpg
3.0L 6-cylHybridAWD23 mpg
  • The 2024 BMW X3 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X3 that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 BMW X3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical6No crashes

The car keeps running with no key inside and gives no warning, according to several filings. Other reports describe a window lowering by itself while parked, the heater cutting out in winter, and a rear door opening at about 40 mph with the doors locked and a child aboard. Separately, the digital instrument cluster sometimes stays dark at startup, so the driver cannot see speed. Most of these filings are follow-up updates to earlier complaints. They say the manufacturer closed the case without an inspection or written findings.

  • Backup camera5No crashes

Rear cross traffic alerts rarely appear or never work at all. Rear automatic braking fails to stop the car for pedestrians or test objects while reversing. Close-range parking detection still works, so the sensors themselves appear to function. Dealers who inspect these cars find no fault and call it normal operation, though one filing says the dealer's lead technician disagreed. The main risk is hitting a person walking behind the car. No crashes are reported in this category.

  • Door latches and locks4No crashes

Rear doors open with one pull instead of two. Some reports describe a rear door opening while the car is moving, including next to a child in a car seat. The problem is covered by recall 25V106000. Most filings are about the recall itself: repair parts are unavailable and the wait has gone on too long. In one case the VIN was reported as not included in the recall even though a door opened at 20 mph. Reported failures come at roughly 10,000 to 18,114 miles.

  • Steering21 crash

The car stops responding to the wheel or reacts late at highway speed. One report involves a crash: the car is forced left into the divider wall and the driver cannot steer back. Another describes the car wandering while the wheel is held straight, plus a delay between input and response when dodging road hazards, which forces the driver to overcorrect. Both reports describe a loss-of-control risk on the highway. With only two filings, the pattern is thin but serious.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The rear drive fails with loud banging and leaves the car undriveable. The cause is reported as failed rear differential bolts and bushings, recurring twice in less than twelve months. No warning lights come on beforehand. A dealer repairs it once and refuses the second time, blaming the driver. A separate report describes the engine stopping during highway acceleration, the dash going black, and the car restarting a second or two later. That owner links the event to recall 25V-202. Both failures happen while the car is moving.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Panoramic sunroof glass shatters suddenly at highway speed with a loud boom and no warning. A second report describes constant cracking and creaking from the sunroof on every drive, whatever the temperature. In that case the dealer says other customers report the same noise and the manufacturer declines to act. No injuries are reported. Still, glass failing overhead while driving causes panic and distracts the driver.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints X3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The digital instrument cluster that displays the speedometer and other information will occasionally not illuminate when the car is started leaving the driver unable to know how fast they are going. This is so dangerous. This has happened to me at least 4 times in the past 6 months

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Door latches and locks
Before I heard about the recall, about 1 week prior while we were on the highway my son was as in his car seat and we were about few mile to our destination his door unlocked and opened. We had to pull over to close it and was very alarmed.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

SteeringCrash reported
Driving on the highway, unexpectedly i was not able to turn anymore. On the road was something I wanted to not hit, but steering did not work as usual. The car was forced to the left into the wall and the only thing i was able to do was using the breaks steady and slowly. Steering in the other direction did not work and in the end i hit the divider wall on the left shoulder

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any BMW dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V106000Door latches and locksFeb 2025

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2024 X3 sDrive30i and X3 xDrive30i vehicles. The second-row seat side door locking modules may not function properly and allow the doors to be unlocked with a single motion. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components.".

Risk: Doors that can be inadvertently unlocked and unlatched may open unexpectedly, increasing the risk of injury to rear seat occupants.

Fix: Dealers will replace the second-row seat side door locking modules, free of charge. A letter informing owners of the safety risk was mailed on April 21, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417.
