Worth adding to your 2025 checks

  • Turn the wheel lock to lock while parked and during slow turns, and feel for heavy or uneven steering effort.
  • On a straight, level road, ease your grip on the wheel for a moment and confirm the car tracks straight without pulling.
  • After each turn, check that the steering wheel returns to center by itself.

Which X3 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 BMW X3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD29 mpg
3.0L 4-cylAWD27 mpg
  • The 2025 BMW X3 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X3 that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 BMW X3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical71 crash

A faulty connection between the starter-generator and the positive battery cable is the main concern. It falls under recall 25V202 and can cause stalling or a fire from overheating. One complaint describes a fire after the car was parked. Several others say the recall part was not available and dealers gave no repair date. Owners also report the center display going black while driving, which takes away navigation, settings, and driver-assist displays. A separate repair record shows an engine wiring harness that rubbed on the water pump pulley and shorted.

  • Automatic emergency braking42 crashes

Emergency braking can trigger with nothing in the way, including while pulling away from a stop. That creates a risk of being rear-ended. Other reports describe a "Driver Assistance restricted" warning on the highway followed by cruise control shutting off suddenly. Two complaints involve crashes. In those, owners say collision mitigation stepped in too late, or rear mitigation gave no warning and did not brake at all. One owner also reports that body repair parts were unavailable, leaving the car in the shop for months.

  • Steering4No crashes

Power steering can fail completely at startup, along with a "Changed Steering effort" warning. In one report the dealer called this a known issue that may need a new steering rack. Other complaints describe clunking and vibration through the steering wheel and brake pedal at low speeds, plus a deep grinding noise when turning the wheel at parking speeds. Dealers often cannot reproduce the noise, and replacing tie rods did not reliably fix it. One complaint filed here describes a drivetrain warning followed by the engine shutting down in traffic.

  • Backup camera21 crash

Problems here involve reversing aids that do not behave as expected. In one crash report, the parking assistant left its saved backing path and gave no warning before impact. Another complaint says the rear camera image can be completely hidden by other screen content when the driver presses buttons while in reverse. The owner calls this fully reproducible. Getting the camera back means shifting into park and then into reverse again. Only two complaints are on file for this category.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints X3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The digital display went blank and no controls on the display . This has happened multiple times. We have reported it to the dealership. However this is a significant problem to loose all digital displays while driving

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Steering
Started the car and received a "Changed Steering effort" error. Car is currently undrivable as the power steering is not working at all. Dealer indicates this is a "known issue" and the steering rack may need to be replaced

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Backup camera
Rear view camera can be obstructed entirely by other full screen elements when interacting with hard of soft buttons. This 100% reproducible effect results in the need to occasionally shift back into park and then reverse to restart the rvc process and have the video appear on top of other on screen content. This appears to violate fmvss rules for reverse cameras.

Where the 2025 fits in the X3's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2025 is the first model year of the X3's fourth generation (2025 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that BMW fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
