Which X3 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 BMW X3. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | AWD, RWD | 25–27 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylGas | AWD | 23 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | AWD | 340 mi range |
- The 2021 BMW X3 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A X3 that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 BMW X3, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical19No crashes
Failure to start is the main pattern. Cars click and refuse to start, or fail to restart after auto start-stop shuts the engine off in traffic, sometimes leaving the car stuck in park. Many reports concern a starter-related electrical recall. Owners worry about fire, but dealers have no parts for the repair. Other reports describe melted daytime running light modules quoted at $4,200, a failed plug-in hybrid battery cell, module communication faults after a DME software update, and a satellite radio ad covering the speedometer.
Body and structure9No crashes
Most complaints here involve the recall for the interior rear cargo rails, whose attachment bolts can let the rails detach in a crash. Owners report that replacement parts are not available and say the wait has gone past a reasonable time. None of these owners report an actual failure. Separately, sunroof glass shatters while the car is moving, and a power tailgate closes on a person without its sensor stopping it.
Acceleration and cruise control72 crashes
Unintended acceleration while parking is the most serious pattern. Owners describe the car surging forward at low speed with the brake pedal pressed, and both crash reports involve hitting a tree or a wall while pulling into a space. In another report, cruise control set at 75 mph climbs past 90 mph on its own. Other complaints cover emergency braking with no vehicle nearby and an analog speedometer marked in 10 mph steps that makes exact speed hard to read.
Brakes3No crashes
Brakes lock up abruptly when backing up because parking distance control reacts to obstacles that are not there. Another report describes a brake pedal that stiffens while approaching a stop light, causing the driver to run the light, at about 50,500 miles. Owners also report loud screeching and a slipping feel under hard braking that gets worse in wet or snowy weather, and repeat dealer visits do not resolve it.
Exterior lights3No crashes
Screen dimming is the main complaint. The instrument cluster and center display set daytime brightness from a light sensor, and there is no manual daytime adjustment. Window tint, shade, or leaving a garage can make the backup camera, navigation, speed, and warnings hard to read. One report also describes headlights in the Auto setting switching on and off by themselves, which becomes a risk if it happens while driving in the dark.
Engine3No crashes
Persistent check engine lights are the most common complaint. Cars go back to dealers 2 or 3 times without a lasting fix, including the plug-in hybrid. Owners say not knowing the cause makes them hesitant to drive. A separate report on the B58 engine describes an oil level reading that will not rise above 20%. The owner links it to a failing oil pump and mentions low oil pressure warnings.
Steering3No crashes
The car wanders on the highway and needs steering corrections every 5 to 10 seconds to stay in its lane, even after a dealer alignment. Owners say repeated dealer visits do not fix it. One car needed both front tie rods replaced at 28,000 miles after loud popping over uneven pavement. Its bushings were worn, and the owner feared it could lead to a loss of steering control.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints X3 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The starter failed and car would not start, requiring replacement by the BMW dealership. Car is only 4 years old and had 29,699 miles at the time of replacement. Wondering whether noticed starter issues requiring replacement in 2021 BMW x3 m40i models in addition to other 2021 BMW x3 models that have been recalled and required starter/relay replacement.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
While stopped in traffic the automatic start-stop system engaged. When traffic began moving again the vehicle failed to restart and automatically shifted to park. I was unable to shift into neutral to move off of the road. The "Engine cannot be started" control message appeared. After several attempts to manual start the vehicle it started.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2025
The sunroof glass spontaneously shattered while the vehicle was in motion. There were no weather events, debris, or damage to the sunroof prior to the incident. The panoramic moonroof behind the sunroof remained intact.

Where the 2021 fits in the X3's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the fourth model year of the X3's third generation (2018–2024).
BMW updated the X3 for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)
- Updated headlights and taillights
- New bumper designs
- 12.3-inch infotainment system available
