Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2022 Audi e-tron. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Your inspection sheet

Tick items off on your phone at the car, or print it. Ticks stay on this device.

These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which e-tron is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Audi e-tron. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 222 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Audi e-tron, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical242 crashes

Sudden shutdowns lead this category. Cars lose all power at a light or while driving, sometimes after a warning message, then recover after a restart. Other reports describe failure to accelerate from a stop, a reduced-power SAFE mode, battery drain while parked, shorter range than advertised, false wrong-way alerts, and screen crashes that disable the rearview camera. Several complaints are about waiting up to 15 months for a recall repair because dealers say parts are not available. Filings include 2 crashes, 1 fire report with smoke in the cabin, and a melted home charging cable.

  • Transmission11No crashes

Drive power cuts out without warning. Most often the car is stopped at a light and will not move when the accelerator is pressed, then drives normally after being shut off and restarted. Others lose power on the highway with electrical system, drive system, or all-wheel-drive failure messages, and some need a tow. A few cars shift into neutral or park on their own. Dealers often cannot find a cause or reproduce the fault, and one battery thermal runaway fault code was cleared without a repair.

  • Brakes3No crashes

The brake pedal sometimes sinks to the floor without slowing the car, then suddenly works normally after several pumps, with no dashboard warning. One report ties this to the car sitting parked for hours. Another says braking is weak in rain or snow until the pedal is pressed 3 times. Separately, pulsating and shaking from worn front rotors comes back after repair. There are only 3 complaints, but a pedal that drops to the floor is a serious stopping risk.

  • Acceleration and cruise control21 crash

Two opposite failures appear. In one, the car surges forward while creeping into a parking space, and hard braking does not stop it, ending in a crash. In the other, the car sits at a stop for more than 30 seconds, shows a SAFE warning, and will not accelerate until the power is cycled. That leaves it stuck in traffic with a risk of being rear-ended. One of the 2 complaints involved a crash.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

From a full stop, the car lunges a few feet forward while showing a forward collision message, then shuts itself off. The problem comes back after a restart. That report puts the mileage at about 5,000. Other complaints describe random screen blackouts, false warnings, and an alarm the key fob cannot silence, starting about 5 months after purchase. One of the 2 complaints involved an injury.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

Range falls well short of expectations. Both complaints report roughly 170 to 199 miles on a full charge, below the advertised figure or what the car used to deliver. Cold, wet weather makes it worse, with one owner reporting fast charging stopping at 90 percent and range dropping further. A dealer battery check found nothing wrong. No crash or fire risk is reported here, but long winter trips need extra planning.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints e-tron owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The AEB system engages periodically with any obstacles while at a high speed. Suffered whiplash and anxiety as problems occurs without warning. Vehicle is available for inspection. Unprovoked Braking at high speeds on highway can be dangerous. Dealer has not responded to complaints of the issue on 2-3 service appointments. Dealer states there are no codes and no follow up was given. No previous errors notes vehicle was bought new and we are first owners.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

Electrical
There is a recall for this vehicle for battery overheating and vehicle catching on fire. Audi is unable to remedy this issue at this time. I notice routinely that the charging wire used to charge this vehicle becomes extra hot during charging. I have discussed this issue with Audi but they claim they cannot help me at this time. I'm worried about danger of fire. Please help.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Transmission
Sudden and complete power loss while accelerating at stop light into an intersection, causing car to stop in the intersection. Error message briefly flashed on dashboard screen indicating failure of all wheel drive module. Estimated mileage fluctuated from 57 miles to 22 miles back to 50 miles. I turned the vehicle off and on several times, after second restart power was restored and the car drove as normal.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Transmission
CAR FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. Came to a stop light. Waited for light to change. Then when I pushed the accelerator nothing happened. No movement. Had to turn on emergency flashers, power down the car completely and restart it to move. Then functioned normally. Happened four times total. Car has already been at the dealer once and had some replacement parts done to fix the issue - but now it has occurred again and they are not sure why.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Brakes
Brakes do not work when there is a precipitation. You need to press the brake 3 times before you can feel the brakes engage. This occurs anytime it rains or snows for the entire time we’ve owned the car and Audi refuses to acknowledge the complaint

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Acceleration and cruise control
Upon the vehicle resting at a stop, for longer than 30 seconds, the vehicle will no longer accelerate. “SAFE” warning is shown by the instrument cluster. Had to turn power off to vehicle and back on for vehicle to accelerate. This has happened twice almost resulting in being rear ended and being stuck in traffic.

Where the 2022 fits in the e-tron's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the fourth model year of the e-tron's first generation (2019–2023).

Audi updated the e-tron for 2023, so a 2022 does not have those changes.
