Which e-tron is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Audi e-tron. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
ElectricAWD222 mi range
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 222 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Audi e-tron, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical17No crashes

A yellow "Electrical System Malfunction" warning can turn into a "safely stop vehicle" alert, and then the motor shuts off while driving, even at highway speed. Some cars will not restart, and dealers sometimes cannot find a cause. Several complaints are about open recall repairs that dealers cannot finish because parts are not available. Other reports describe the center screens going blank while driving, doors that will not unlock with the key fob, rear doors that will not open from inside, home charging that overheats or trips breakers, and an A/C failure that kept a car in the shop for 30 days while waiting for parts.

  • Transmission8No crashes

Drive power cuts out suddenly after an electrical system warning. The car coasts to a stop or stalls, sometimes in an intersection or a traffic lane, and has to be towed. Some owners say it has happened more than once. Reported repairs include a front motor replaced after coolant got into it and a master controller replaced in the battery. Reports cluster between about 13,090 miles and under 25K. A separate complaint describes the car shutting off and shifting into Park at low speed after overnight charging. The dealer called that normal.

  • Brakes2No crashes

Braking can fade partway through the pedal stroke. In these reports, regenerative braking lets off at the midpoint but the mechanical brakes do not engage, so pressing harder slows the car less. One owner says this happened five times with two different drivers. Another complaint describes brakes sticking to the rotors so the car will not move, with loud noises when forced. The dealer called that normal. Both problems raise a clear crash risk.

  • Engine2No crashes

Coolant seeps into the front electric motor and kills it. A contact-service warning comes first, then a pull-over alert, and then the car can jerk and die in traffic before the driver can reach the shoulder. Dealers fix it by replacing the whole front motor, and one report cites a turnaround of 2 weeks or more. The failures in these reports happen between 9,300 and 20,759 miles. One of the two reports describes a 2022 car.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints e-tron owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
While operating the vehicle the air conditioning system failed. The vehicle was brought to dealer for diagnosis which confirmed the failure and was out of service for 30 days due to parts availability being SOP. The dealer provided a loaner and fuel reimbursement due my car being electric but refused to reimburse the lease payment for the 30 days out of service. The parts replaced were 4M0-959-609 SENSOR, 87571950 HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH & REFRIGERANT.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2021

Electrical
This is in regards to Safety Recall Code: 93U8. Audi USA has failed to provided an updated 220V/240V charging unit cable and a compact/portable charging system software update for my vehicle in the 230 days since the product recall.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Transmission
Repeated sudden loss of forward propulsion power associated with multiple warning messages about drive system and electrical system malfunction. Because the problem is sudden and the car has no forward propulsion power the car is left blocking traffic with occupants still inside. This has occurred multiple times over the last 6 months and no cause has been identified yet.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Brakes
Car turns on but won’t move. Take it to dealership as it happens for the second time and turns out the brakes are sticking to the rotors. Audi says it’s perfectly normal just put force to the accelerator. When you do that in fact, it sound like the car is about to split in half. Dangerous as they could stick while driving anywhere. Scared for my life in the car.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2022

Engine
2022 Audi etron. 20,759 miles. Electrical malfunction light came on. Took it to the dealer. Advised Entire front motor needed to be replaced due to coolant seepage into the front motor. Seems to be a very common problem and a 2 week+ turnaround

Where the 2021 fits in the e-tron's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the third model year of the e-tron's first generation (2019–2023).

Audi updated the e-tron for 2023, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2021)
