Which XC60 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Volvo XC60. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 24–26 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | AWD | 560 mi range |
- The 2022 Volvo XC60 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A XC60 that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Volvo XC60, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical26No crashes
The 12V battery drains flat, often in the first weeks of ownership. The car then won't unlock or start, and some owners find it stuck in park and needing a flatbed tow. The Google-based infotainment system freezes or reboots while driving. When it does, HVAC, turn-signal sounds, cameras and driver aids drop out until it comes back. Several reports describe a "12V Battery Critical Charging Fault" warning and a reduced-power turtle mode, and one car lost power on the highway. Dealers apply software updates or replace modules such as the TCAM, with mixed results.
Backup camera5No crashes
The rearview camera fails when the car is shifted into reverse. The screen goes blank or shows "Camera is temporarily unavailable," sometimes several times a week. Dealer repairs have not stopped it, including reflashing the camera control module and replacing the camera. Owners say the problem continues or gets more frequent after software updates. In some cases the other cameras, the proximity warnings and rear automatic braking all drop out at the same time, which leaves the driver backing up with no electronic help.
Wheels and tires5No crashes
The original tires fail early. Owners report sidewall bubbles, bulges, chunks of missing tread and blowouts at freeway speed. The reports involve Pirelli and Continental tires in 20- and 21-inch sizes on cars about a year old or under 9000 miles. A blowout at 65 mph is a serious loss-of-control risk. Owners say the tire maker and Volvo blame each other over warranty coverage. In one case the tread was too damaged to patch, so the tires had to be replaced.
Cracks appear in the rims even though owners recall no impact, and a cracked wheel can slowly leak air. The Recharge plug-in hybrid also has no spare tire, only a repair kit that can't fix sidewall damage, so a flat of that kind means a tow to a tire shop. One owner was told that a conventional spare would not support this model's weight. That makes a breakdown in a remote area, at night or on a weekend more of a problem.
Brakes31 crash
Rear Auto Brake engages on its own while backing up, with no obstacles, people or vehicles nearby, and the dash shows an intervention message. One crash report describes the car lurching forward at full throttle instead of stopping during a slow parking maneuver and hitting a wall. That car had already been back to the dealer several times for computer and infotainment problems. Another complaint describes the electric parking brake showing a warning about holding the vehicle's weight on a steep slope.
Automatic emergency braking2No crashes
Hard braking kicks in when nothing is ahead of the car. The dash shows a collision-avoidance message, but no warning lights come on. In one report the sudden stop at about 45 mph caused rib pain. A separate complaint concerns the alert that tells the driver to move when the car ahead pulls away. A driver who isn't watching the light could follow that prompt into a red light and a possible crash.
Steering2No crashes
The car steers itself off line. Some drivers feel a sudden, forceful yank to one side with a Collision Avoidance message on the screen. Others report a steady pull to the right that can drift the car out of its lane. For one owner, repeated alignments and wheel and tire swaps over six dealer visits did not fix the pull, and the dealer called it a safety feature. Unexpected steering input on a multi-lane road is a clear loss-of-control risk.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints XC60 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
4 day old car with 45 miles on it wouldn’t unlock-manually unlocked the car to find it wouldn’t start/no power. Car was towed to dealer after being jump started. Software error caused application downloads or refreshes to continually run draining the battery which needed to be replaced entirely.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2022
A/C failed to turn on. This is the second time this has occurred. It was on a 100 degree Texas day. I was already in the vehicle and it was so hot in the vehicle I was worried about a heat stroke. It caused a distraction while driving because the electrical components weren’t functioning as intended potentially causing an accident. The 2022 models have known electrical issues and the dealership was not surprised. The vehicle is currently in the shop.

Even after the Volvo R10320 - WAM Upgrade recall, the backup camera is STILL unavailable at times when reversing. The recall and software update did not fix the issue. I would start the car and begin to reverse and met with "Camera is temporarily unavailable". I do not know what else do to as Volvo is slow to respond or provide anytime of upgrade or timely fix. This has happened multiple times and almost five times a week.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
System regularly displays "Camera is temporarily unavailable" when backing up, requires full reboot of head unit to resolve. Backup cameras regularly not activating upon vehicle startup. This is a daily occurrence and has not been fixed with updates (in fact, it's gotten more frequent).
