Which e-tron is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Audi e-tron. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD | 204 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 204 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Sudden loss of drive power
30,000–63,000 miles
Coolant leak into front motor
63,000–87,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Audi e-tron, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical271 crash
Sudden "Electrical system malfunction, safely stop vehicle" warnings are followed by the motors shutting down, which leaves the car immobile and needing a tow. Reported causes include coolant leaking into the front motor at about 87k miles and a part dealers call SX6 failing twice, at 52,991 and 104,741 miles. Many complaints are about a high-voltage battery recall. Owners say it still lacks a final fix, with charging capped and dealers short on parts. One car caught fire at a charging station. Another lurched forward at a red light with the brake pressed.
Transmission91 crash
In Drive or Reverse, the car rolls freely when the accelerator is released before a full stop, much as if it were in neutral. On driveways and hills it can roll backward quickly. Brake hold works only after a full stop with the pedal held. One rollback ended in a crash into a structure. Other reports describe a total loss of propulsion from coolant getting into the rear motor, with warranty coverage refused. Some describe charge port or charge flap failures soon after battery recall service, including a constant warning chime.
Fuel system6No crashes
On the freeway, an electrical failure warning appears and tells the driver to leave the road. In one case the front motor had flooded at about 63,000 miles, and a bad battery module was suspected when the failure came back. In another, a DC fast charger port caught fire and melted the high-voltage pins. Most other complaints concern the battery fire-risk recall. Owners describe charging limits in place of a repair, no repair path from dealers, falling range from weak cells, and lower resale value.
Brakes4No crashes
"Brake System Fault" and "Parking Brake Malfunction" warnings appear repeatedly, along with clicking or resistance at the brake pedal. One driver at 50 to 55 mph on cruise control had the car brake hard for a split second under an Audi Pre Sense alert, with no hazard ahead. Other complaints describe a loud brake squeal that keeps getting worse after dealer advice. One buyer found worn pads and rotors days after buying the car from a dealer.
Wipers and visibility4No crashes
At night and in low light, the rear backup camera image is dark and grainy, which makes pedestrians, curbs, and other cars hard to see when reversing. The owner says a clean lens does not help. Another complaint describes the rear wiper firing once at stops after rain has set off the automatic front wipers. That owner says it began after a rear camera software update done as recall service.
Water leaks in through the sunroof even when it is fully closed. Rain runs onto the infotainment system, the shifter, and other electronics, and it pools in the footwell. One owner links the leak to a sunroof limited warranty extension service bulletin. Another, at 170,000 miles, says the dealer did not diagnose or repair the leak and Audi referred them to the federal hotline instead.
Engine3No crashes
Several warning lights come on, then the car loses motive power, sometimes with a "Major System Failure" message. In one case the car stalled during a left turn at about 35 mph, and the dealer could not find a cause on two visits. One owner had the drive unit replaced at about 30,000 miles. Another car of similar mileage caught fire while parked and unoccupied in a garage, with flames from the front compartment and rear underbody, and was destroyed.
Automatic emergency braking2No crashes
Emergency braking sets off with nothing ahead. In one case Audi Pre Sense braked hard in a dip in the road, and the car behind nearly hit it. With adaptive cruise assist on, the car can also stop suddenly for vehicles sitting in a left-turn lane beside it. A separate fault shows a "cruise assist currently unavailable" message and turns the feature off for random stretches during highway driving.
Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes
One report describes a complete loss of braking. Brake warnings came on, then alerts lit up for the suspension, drivetrain, and most other systems. Neither the brakes nor the paddles slowed the car, and the driver coasted to a stop on the shoulder. Another owner reports sudden acceleration twice without cruise control, once on the highway and once under 15 mph. Pumping the brakes regained control both times, and the dealer confirmed the floor mats were secure.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints e-tron owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The charging system used to charge the vehicle cannot be used at full capacity otherwise it can cause a fire. Potential house fire, wiring damage to home. This problem has been confirmed by the manufacturer. The components have not been inspected because Audi does not have a remedy for this recall. There are no warnings on the vehicle. Lights flicker in the home when charging.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2024
Rearview and camera displays showed a blank screen. The instance showed up when the vehicle was in Reverse. The screen turned blank besides other features on the display such as camera views. Each view showed blank. An inoperative rearview camera display reduces the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2024
When vehicle is in drive or reverse, it rolls forward and backwards when no throttle is applied (as if in neutral), vehicle hit a structure because it rolled back at a rapid pace due to an incline. Audi needs to implement a feature to prevent the vehicle from rolling when at a near stop and the vehicle is in drive or reverse.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2022
Vehicle dangerously rolls backwards on driveway when in drive, the vehicle does not brake hold when in drive or reverse, it will roll either direction freely as if in neutral. Audi needs to release a software update to hold vehicle when rolling opposite direction of selected gear.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2022
Battery has a recall in place for fire hazard..I contacted the dealership and they have no path for a repair . They have also denied my buy back request.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2024
The vehicle has a squeaky noise on the break no matter what condition the noise is very loud. Dealer said to break hard from 0-60 mph to clean pads and issue has not been addressed. It’s getting worse.

Where the 2019 fits in the e-tron's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2019 is the first model year of the e-tron's first generation (2019–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Audi fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Audi updated the e-tron for 2023, so a 2019 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2023 (not on a 2019)
- New branding
- Updated features
