Which Model X is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Tesla Model X. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
ElectricAWD371 mi range
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 371 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Tesla Model X, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering12No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out without warning. A "steering assist reduced" alert often appears, and the wheel turns very heavy or locks. Several reports describe this at road speed, with lane-keeping features dropping out at the same time. Drivers describe drifting toward other lanes and fighting the wheel to reach the shoulder. One highway report describes a full loss of control. Tesla service usually replaces the steering rack or steering gear, with out-of-warranty quotes near $5,000. Failures appear as early as 8,000 miles, with several reports near 50,000 miles.

  • Suspension61 crash

Control arms crack or fail, according to most reports. Both front upper and rear lower arms are named. One filing cites a junked car whose rear lower control arm cracked in half and let the wheel flop loose. Another places control arm failures at around 50,000 miles. Some reports tie front half-shaft failures to the same suspension problem. Another complaint says service delays pushed a control arm repair past warranty. The single crash with an injury in this group describes sudden unintended acceleration, not a failed suspension part.

  • Electrical61 crash

The main computer shuts down while driving, blacking out the screens, speedometer and turn signals for seconds or minutes before rebooting. Many reports say it happens repeatedly, sometimes within the first months of ownership, and service called it a known firmware issue. One report links a driver-assist computer failure to lost autopilot and doors that would not open, with repair coverage denied after warranty. AC compressor failures shut off cabin cooling and limit battery cooling and charging, at a cost above $2,300. The one crash-related filing starts with a full screen blackout at highway speed.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

Windshield glass shows a mottled flaw that is hard to see in normal light but causes blinding glare when driving into the sun. A separate report describes the windshield cracking during defrosting. In that case, Tesla service said it knew about the problem and advises owners to warm the car up before turning on the defroster. Both complaints say other Tesla owners report the same problems. Neither describes a crash, but both describe a direct loss of forward visibility.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Front half shafts fail, and one car has needed replacements three times. The other complaint describes a rattling or grinding noise under medium to heavy acceleration that sounds like something coming loose, which service called normal and declined to fix. Only two complaints are filed here. Half-shaft failures also come up in the suspension complaints, so a worn or noisy front driveline on a used example deserves a close look.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Model X owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
Steering assist error code. Car has less than 25,000 miles and Tesla is reporting this is common and the steering rack needs to be replaced and the steering gear left hand drive. Tesla Temecula also said there was a system malfunction that caused it but they do not dig into that they just do the service for $5100. Looking online this is common.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Suspension
At 50K miles the control arms on model X seem to always fail. This is a serious safety issue. My last model X had the same issue. Also my friends who have Teslas have many control arm failures.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Suspension
It is commonly known that the drive shafts on the Model X fail. This is not a wear component and should be a recall. The suspension is also part of this issue and there are after market solutions to fix the suspension that is causing the failure of the half shafts.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Electrical
Compressor fails causing cooling of the battery to fail and AC in the car not to work. System sais AC reduced charging reduced. No Air at all. It seems to be a very common issue. This seems unsafe and is a major expense to fix. $2300+

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Wipers and visibility
There is a windshield defect on MY vehicle but check the boards, it is a common problem. The windshield has a mottling defect which is not obvious in normal light BUT - drive into the sun and suddenly you are blinded. It must be a known situation as the boards report this on many different models. We have owned a prior Tesla X so it is not us getting used to the car, it is a defect.
