Worth adding to your 2025 checks

  • Start the car after it has sat overnight and watch for 12-volt battery, propulsion, or limp-mode warnings.
  • Use climate, navigation, camera, and audio on the center screen during a long drive and watch for freezes or reboots.
  • Walk away and return with the key several times, and confirm the car detects it and starts every time.

Which XC60 is it?

  • The 2025 Volvo XC60 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A XC60 that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Volvo XC60, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical71 crash

Screens go black without warning. Reports describe the center display, navigation, instrument cluster and heads-up display shutting off while driving, sometimes taking audio chimes, turn-signal sound, climate control and blind-spot lights with them. Problems start within the first few months, one at about 4,000 miles. Dealer software reboots often fail to hold, and some cars wait on part replacements. Separate reports describe sudden acceleration at parking-lot speed, including one crash with an injury, and a plug-in hybrid tailgate opening by itself while parked and switched off.

  • Wipers and visibility4No crashes

Rear side windows turn hazy or cloudy, and the glare is worst in direct sun or under headlights at night. The reports involve laminated rear passenger glass on cars less than a year old, including B5 Plus and plug-in hybrid Ultimate versions. Owners say the haze blocks the view during lane changes and parking, and one dealer confirmed the cloudiness. A separate report describes the 360-degree camera system going dark in reverse, with every camera crossed out, and staying out after reboots on current software.

  • Backup camera4No crashes

Rear and surround cameras drop out with a "Camera temporarily unavailable" warning, sometimes in the middle of backing up. Outages last from a moment to several hours and often clear on their own. The camera failures tend to arrive with wider electrical faults: the center screen blacks out, and audio, climate control and map display stop working. Cars are only weeks or months old when this happens. One plug-in hybrid had its dashboard go blank again right after the 12 volt battery, on-board charger and wiring harness were replaced.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

The power tailgate closes on people while they load cargo. Both reports involve an injury. The hands-free foot sensor under the rear bumper can trigger a close when a foot comes near it, not only an open, and the gate comes down on the person's head. One owner was struck twice, the second time hard enough to cut the scalp. Anyone who stands close to the bumper while loading is at risk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints XC60 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Wipers and visibility
The 360 camera system stopped working on my 2025 Volvo XC60 PHEV today without warning. When I put the vehicle in reverse, the camera view window showed up on the screen with a top down of the vehicle, but the surroundings were black and each camera symbol showed up as orange with a cross out through it. Rebooting the system twice did not solve the issue. The software version is 3.7.0 which is the most up to date release.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Backup camera
Backup camera failed while backing up. 07/28/2025 Screen went black. Other computer controlled functions also failed concurrently, e.g, climate control, audio warnings, map display Screen blackout has happened several times while driving, but backup camera failure while car was backing up was worse.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Body and structure
The rear tailgate has a feature that allows a driver to open it by waving their foot underneath the bumper in case their hands are full. The system will also unsafely cause the door to close if a person places their foot too close when loading cargo. This has twice lowered the door on my head. The most recent time causing bleeding when the latch struck my scalp. This feature should only be used to open the gate, not close it.

Fix: The software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 24, 2026. Owners may contact Volvo Car’s customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10333.
