  • Run the VIN through the federal recall lookup and get dealer paperwork showing every recall repair is done.

Worth adding to your 2025 checks

  • Run the VIN for open recalls covering brakes, stability control, and air bags, and confirm each shows as completed.
  • Ask for dealer records proving recall work was actually performed, not just scheduled or waiting on parts.
  • With the engine running, press the brake pedal firmly and reject the car if it feels stiff or sinks toward the floor.

Why these checks: what owners reported

  • Electrical31 crash

Dashboard screens go black while driving, sometimes at highway speeds near 70 mph. During a blackout the driver loses the speedometer, fuel gauge, and climate controls. The instrument display can return with every warning light lit while the center screen reboots, which takes 20 to 30 seconds. One owner reports the problem kept coming back after the dealer replaced the head unit. A separate report, the only crash-related one, says a tire lost pressure while the car showed only a generic tire pressure message, and the driver swerved to get out of traffic.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Drivetrain fault warnings appear and keep coming back, with prompts to call roadside assistance. Reported symptoms include the car refusing to go faster than 30 mph and false rollover warnings while parked on flat ground. In another report, the car shifts on its own from drive into park and won't move, with no warning lights. Dealers in both reports could not find a fix, and one case was escalated to BMW without resolution. Only 2 complaints are on file, and neither reports a crash.
