Which Telluride is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Kia Telluride. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.8L 6-cylAWD, FWD21–23 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Telluride that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Windshield chips and cracks

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Kia Telluride, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Wipers and visibility70No crashes

Windshields chip and crack from small stones, often in the first few thousand miles. Cracks spread quickly across the driver's view. Some cracks appear while the car is parked, with no impact at all. Owners describe repeat chips and replacements, and dealers often decline warranty coverage. Sunroof glass also shatters while driving, sometimes dropping glass into the cabin. Sunroof tracks and wind deflectors break and leave the roof unable to close. Rear door glass bursting at highway speed shows up as well.

Front sunroof glass bursts at highway speed with a loud bang and no impact. A closed sunshade often keeps the glass out of the cabin. Sunroof tracks and hinges also break, and in one injury report a falling part hit the driver. Windshields crack from tiny chips or with no impact at all, sometimes overnight while parked. The cracks spread quickly into the driver's view. Replacement is expensive because the lane-keeping camera must be recalibrated, and one dealer quoted $1,600.

  • Engine26No crashes

The main pattern is oil burning that ends in engine failure. Engines use several quarts between changes, often with no oil pressure or check engine warning, until the car sputters, stalls, or loses power on the highway. Reports cluster from about 63,000 to 116,000 miles. Several owners were told the engine needed replacing, with one quote of $10,500. Leaks from the oil pan gasket and oil filter housing also appear. There are 2 fire reports, one tied to a rod bearing failure that punched holes in the block.

  • Electrical25No crashes

Instrument clusters and infotainment screens go dark or freeze with colored blocks. When the screen fails, the backup camera and collision warnings go with it. Several reports describe every dash warning lighting at once, along with lost gauges, turn signals, power steering, or engine power. In one case a $2600 cluster replacement did not fix it. Other complaints cover no-start and stuck-in-park episodes, a driver door that loses power, child lock failure messages, and parking sensor errors. The one injury came from a rollaway after the car was put in park.

  • Body and structure23No crashes

Sunroof hardware dominates this category. Plastic wind deflector arms snap, tracks bend or come off, and the roof sticks partly open in the rain. The fix often means a whole new assembly, with quotes over $5,000 and parts on backorder for weeks. Sunroof glass also shatters at highway speed. Other reports cover windows that flex at highway speed and roll back down, a fuel door that fell off, and peeling door belt molding. Owners note that later model years were recalled for that trim but 2021 was not.

  • Transmission21No crashes

Transmissions shift with a jerk, hesitate when pulling away or merging, rev without accelerating, and slip more as time goes on. Some cars do this from new, while others start in the middle of their life and get worse, and at least one ended in a full transmission replacement at 56,000 miles. A rhythmic vibration at 60 to 75 mph is covered by TSB 099 for early production cars. Other reports include sudden highway slowdowns from a failed high-pressure fuel pump, cracked plastic oil filter housings, surging at idle, and a rear AWD coupler that clunks and binds in slow turns.

  • Suspension12No crashes

Rear self-leveling shocks fail. They clunk, leak fluid, and leave the back end either rigid or bouncing hard over small bumps. Several owners say the car is hard to control on rough roads, and passengers in the rear rows get thrown around. More than one report places the failure around 65,000 miles, and replacement shocks sometimes fail again within a year. Kia's coverage varies, and one owner faced an $1800 bill. One report describes a broken rear frame weld found after repeated loud bangs.

  • Brakes83 crashes

The brake pedal sinks to the floor and the car keeps rolling. Three of 8 complaints involve crashes, mostly at low speed in garages or parking structures. In one, the dash lit up as both the brakes and the parking brake failed. Dealers often find no fault. Other reports involve rear caliper bolts or a newly installed caliper coming loose, an under-dash part falling onto the pedals, and a software update that leaves the parking brake on after the door is opened in drive.

  • Airbags33 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in serious crashes. The reports include a front hit from a pickup, a broadside by a car going over 40 mph, and a 70 mph crash into a tree. All 3 complaints involve crashes, and 3 people were injured. One owner says automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning also failed to activate. The sample is small, and none of the reports gives a finding on why the airbags did not deploy.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Telluride owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Wipers and visibility
Located a crack on my windshield. The crack is below the windshield wipers towards the bottom and below the line of the hood. No bullseye nor a stone chip mark. Crack is about an inch long. Saw on Kia's website there were similar problems with the 2020 models. We've only owned the vehicle for about 4 months and have just over 6000 miles on it. No other signs of rock damage on entire vehicle.

Wipers and visibility
A tiny rock hit the windshield going 30 miles an hour. The crack has consistently grown every day. My whole windshield has to be replaced. I've never had a vehicle that has such a weak windshield. This car is only 11 months old. The crack is horizontal and affects my view if the road because it's right in the middle.

Engine
The last two times I have been due for an oil change my car has been completely empty. It is 4 years old and burning 4/5 quarts of oil between oil changes. Yesterday for example, my oil notification came on, today I start my car and my engine light came on, check the oil and nothing. Put 2 quarts of oil in it so I can make it to the mechanic tomorrow. This should not be happening on a 4 year old vehicle

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Engine
Excessive Oil usage to the point of no oil on dip stick yet engine doesnt alert to low oil or pressure. Engine started sputtering and stalling which is why we even checked. Oil changes are done on normal basis. This seems to be a common complaint on the Internet now that I am looking into this. This car is 4 years old and should not be having engine trouble.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Electrical
The instrument cluster failed in less than 30 days on my new 2021 Kia Telluride LX. Bought the vehicle with only 9 miles on it and I am shocked to take in for service so soon. The engine starts up and the car drives but none of the gauges light up or work in the instrument cluster.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2021

Electrical
Harness and wires damaged and chewed by woodchuck causing multiple warning lights and malfunctions including headlight; turning signal and temperature to suddenly stop working, resulting in front wiring harness replacement and repairs costing over $7k in damage.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Body and structure
My wife came out of her place of work and there was a six inch crack on our Telluride windshield. She wasn't driving, it was just sitting in the parking lot. There are no signs of an impact like a rock chip or anything. The vehicle is three months old and has 4000 miles on it.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2021

Body and structure
Driving down a 2-lane highway doing less than 60 mph, the wind from the oncoming semi-truck shattered the sunroof glass. This caused us to have to drive hundreds of miles home with water, wind and broken glass in our car with 3 children who were 6 years old and younger. I contact Kia Corporate compliants directly while the car was in the shop for several weeks and they said because it was already fixed there was nothing they could do.

Where the 2021 fits in the Telluride's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the second model year of the Telluride's first generation (2020 on).

Kia updated the Telluride for 2023, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2021)

  • New 12.3-inch instrument panel
  • Smart power liftgate with auto-close
  • Redesigned grille, headlights, and front bumper
  • New X-Line and X-Pro trims
