Which Atlas is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission7No crashes

Refusing to move is the core complaint. Some cars hesitate from a stop and then lurch forward once power arrives. Others will not engage Drive without several tries, or stall and then refuse any gear. Dashboards fill with engine, transmission, TCM and ESC warnings, and one car went into limp mode and would not exceed 25 mph. Failures appear early, from about 1,000 to 5,242 miles. Several cars stopped during left turns across traffic or on the highway. Some were towed in, and dealers often had no diagnosis or repair.

  • Electrical6No crashes

Shutting off mid-drive is the most serious report: the car stalls, shows a drive system error and will not restart. A failed infotainment unit can also take out the backup camera, defrosters and blind spot monitoring, in one case at 5,500 miles. Other reports describe automatic braking that slams on with nothing nearby, even in reverse, and lights, sunroof and roadside assistance buttons that act on their own below 40 degrees. Batteries can drain completely, leaving the car dead. Dealers often cannot replicate these faults, though one replaced modules and the screen.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

Phantom braking at highway speed is the main complaint. On cruise control at 70 to 80 mph, the car can brake hard to nearly a complete stop with nothing ahead. It may also claim no driver is present while both hands are on the wheel. That creates a real rear-end collision risk, and the problem keeps recurring. The other report involves an infotainment screen failing twice. The dealer could not explain the failure and quoted a wait of over 2 weeks for service.

  • Steering2No crashes

The wheel locks up in the middle of a turn, and in one report also while reversing. The driver had to brake hard to avoid a crash. A brief burst of warnings comes with each lockup, including steering, brake maneuver, hill assist and front assist failures, and once the check engine light. The messages clear after a few seconds or a restart. That vehicle was only 7 days old and was towed in. The second complaint names only the rack, with no symptoms described.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Atlas owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
While on road, waiting to turn left across oncoming traffic, numerous dashboard lights went off, warning messages for TCM and ESC systems and car would not move forward with pressing on accelerator. As if the car was in neutral.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Automatic emergency braking
The car is in cruise control on the freeway, going 70-80mph and suddenly decelerates/brakes slam on, to slow down. The front collision will come on and the car will come to almost a complete stop when there is absolutely NOTHING in front of me. The vehicle will alert there is no driver, when I have both hands on the wheel, and start braking. These sudden stops and slow downs are going to get me or someone else killed. This is an ongoing issue.
