Which Corolla is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Toyota Corolla. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGasFWD35 mpg
1.8L 4-cylHybridAWD, FWD48–50 mpg
  • The 2025 Toyota Corolla was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Corolla that averages well under the EPA 35 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Toyota Corolla, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission5No crashes

Transmission trouble can start within days of delivery. Automatic-transmission reports cite slipping, hard shifts, and shifts that come too early or too late. One failure came at about 25 miles and took a month to repair, and the car still did not drive the same afterward. Manual cars draw complaints of grinding into third, a clutch pedal that drops to the floor, and gears that suddenly lock out while moving, stranding the car in traffic. Another report describes repeated, brief power loss on the road in the first week.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The infotainment screen freezes or goes black and takes navigation, Bluetooth and touch controls down with it. In one case a dealer module replacement did not fix it. A hybrid owner reports the whole cabin blacking out at highway speed, then power returning with lights blinking, and links it to similar 2025-26 hybrid reports. Other complaints describe a hybrid lurching forward in park when the engine starts, a speedometer that reads well off actual speed, and a warped dash on a car with under 100 miles.

  • Brakes31 crash

Brake complaints are few, but they include a crash with 1 injury. In that report the brakes squealed and would not stop the car from 60 MPH before it hit a stopped truck, and the air bags did not deploy. Another car showed a cluster of warnings for the parking brake, stability control, check engine and secondary collision brake, along with rough, shaking starts. The problems returned a day after a dealer repair. A third case involves a brake pedal arm bent during an ABS stop on ice, and Toyota declined to cover the repair.

  • Exterior lights3No crashes

Dim, undersized taillights draw most of these complaints. At night only a small red dot lights up at each corner, and SE owners report near rear-end collisions, noting that the XSE gets larger lamps. The other issue is a broken front left headlight mount. One owner says the dealer inspected it but would not cover it under warranty, and says many other owners report the same problem online. No crashes are reported in this category.

  • Acceleration and cruise control3No crashes

These complaints describe the car changing speed on its own, and the failures show up early, between 1,400 and 3,600 miles. One hybrid reportedly ran up to 135 MPH on cruise control and would not slow when the brake pedal was pressed. Another car suddenly slowed while merging onto a highway and refused to accelerate. A Corolla Cross reportedly sped up and applied its brakes on its own several times. Dealers could not reproduce or diagnose any of these failures.

  • Steering3No crashes

The wheel can suddenly turn heavy or lose power assist. Reports describe it randomly becoming hard to turn while the car drifts, and a Corolla Cross that switched to manual steering for 1-2 seconds at 40 mph. Another owner reports the wheel wobbling and the whole car swaying at freeway speed. Dealers could not replicate the problems. In one case they switched off driver-assist settings instead, which reduced the episodes but did not stop them. Each failure carries a clear loss-of-control risk.

  • Automatic emergency braking3No crashes

Phantom braking and erratic driver aids are the pattern. The pre-collision system sounds alarms and brakes hard for objects that are not there, which one dealer blamed on a loss of communication. With cruise control set at 65 mph, one car reportedly accelerated to 80 mph until the driver braked. On the Corolla Cross, lane keeping struggles to track lane lines and often steers the wrong way, especially on unmarked rural roads, so owners turn it off. These failures risk rear-end and lane-departure crashes.

  • Fuel system2No crashes

Two unrelated faults appear here. One is a clutch that slips under acceleration, which makes highway merges and pulling out from a yield into an intersection dangerous. The other is a random engine malfunction warning that shuts off forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, cruise control and other sensor-based aids, and also cuts power to the rear wheels. The systems come back after 3 or 4 drive cycles. The dealer found code P2C90, which relates to the positive crankcase ventilation system.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Corolla owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
On day 3 of having the car brand new straight from the dealer about 25 miles on it the transmission went out. Spent a month for them to fix it. Still does not drive the same and I can tell does not excellerate the same.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Electrical
Driving on highway around 65mph, car shut down internally completely blacking out inside. Turned back on a few seconds later while still driving all lights were blinking. Pushed the SOS no-one answered pushed again then someone came on. Matches the same description on the other 2025-26 hybrids in the corolla cross and camry hybrid.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Exterior lights
Front Left Side Headlight Mount is Broken on my Vehicle. On Internet also many consumers are complaining about the Left Headlight mount Broken but no support from Toyota. Feel Safe but not sure when this Headlight might come out of the vehicle. This issue is there and already inspected by the Dealer but they dont care to cover under warranty.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Exterior lights
The tail lights on the SE version are way too small. We have had numerous instances on near rear end collisions due to the size and placement of the SE model tail lights. They are tiny and they only offer much larger, safe taillights on the XSE model. Really do not even understand how the SE taillight configuration is legal.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Toyota dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V595000ElectricalSep 2025

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Toyota Venza, 2023-2025 RAV4 Prime, RAV4, Highlander, GR Corolla, Crown, 2024-2025 Lexus TX, LS, Toyota Tacoma, Grand Highlander, and 2025 Lexus RX, Toyota Crown Signia, Camry, RAV 4 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and 4 Runner vehicles. Due to an error in the instrument panel software at vehicle startup, the instrument panel may fail to display vehicle speed, brake system, and tire pressure warning lights.

Risk: An instrument panel display that does not show critical information can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will update the instrument panel software for non-PHEV vehicles, free of charge. For PHEV vehicles, dealers will inspect the instrument panel assembly, and either replace it, or update the software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 5, 2025. Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid and 2023-2025 Corolla Hybrid vehicles. A software error in the skid control electronic control unit (ECU) may result in a loss of power brake assist when turning a corner.

Risk: A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the skid control ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 19, 2024. Additionally, notifications to owners of the Corolla Hybrid vehicles were mailed January 17, 2025. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
