Which Equinox is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD26–27 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Equinox that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Wipers and visibility88No crashes

The dashboard reflects onto the windshield in sunlight, and this glare dominates the complaints. Drivers describe a mirror image of the dash pattern that can make the glass nearly opaque in late-afternoon sun. Some also see it at night under street lights. Several report near misses with pedestrians, cyclists, or a child on a bike they did not see. A service bulletin, TSB #25-NA-069, adds a dash pad, though one owner says it comes off easily and looks cheap. Some dealers say they know of no fix. A few reports mention A-pillar blind spots and false blind-spot alerts.

  • Electrical49No crashes

The battery goes dead or the car loses power when the OnStar telematics module fails. This is the most common pattern in this category. Dealers confirm the module drains the battery, and replacement parts sit on backorder for weeks with no firm date. Cars end up stranded, jump-started, or towed, in one case at 5,482 miles. A failed module also knocks out GPS, OnStar emergency calls, and app features. Equinox EV owners add instrument screens that freeze or go blank at highway speed, high-voltage system errors, and false automatic braking while reversing.

  • Automatic emergency braking212 crashes

Phantom braking leads these reports. Automatic emergency braking brings the car to a hard, full stop with nothing ahead. It happens at parking-lot speeds, in roundabouts, and on the highway with adaptive cruise on. Drivers describe near rear-end collisions, and several turn the feature off. Adaptive cruise also fails to slow or stop for traffic ahead, and one driver says it sped up past the set speed. Of 21 complaints, 2 involve crashes. In one, the car went over a curb and rolled down a hillside, injuring the driver. In the other, the car hit a deer and never braked.

  • Brakes194 crashes

Brakes fail to slow the car, mostly on Equinox EV models. The pattern repeats on steep gravel or rocky downhill roads, where the pedal goes to the floor and the car picks up speed. It also happens with one-pedal driving or adaptive cruise on. Other reports describe sudden hard braking with no obstacle, and a brake assist failure that leaves a heavy pedal, no regen, and a 62 mph speed limit. Of 19 complaints, 4 involve crashes into gates, buildings, or other cars. Two people were injured, with whiplash from a phantom stop at freeway speed.

  • Transmission191 crash

The transmission misbehaves in several ways. Cars shift from Drive to Park on their own while stopped, stall, or refuse to shift and show a "Conditions not correct for shift" message. One owner reports a second valve body replacement. Others describe fluid leaks, shudder, slipping, hesitation in the lower gears, and an 8-speed that will not reach 8th gear at highway speed. Leaks appear between 4,500 and 8,000 miles, and one car needed a new transmission. In one crash, the car lurched forward while parking. Several reports here actually describe the telematics battery drain and phantom braking.

  • Steering9No crashes

The turn signal stalk snaps past center after a right turn and flashes the left signal two or three times. This is the most repeated issue. The other reports are scattered. Power steering quit at about 8,300 miles after a front camera failure. Other owners describe steering that seizes at highway speed after long drives, a pull to the left, and a steering-wheel button that engages low gear when bumped on the interstate. One owner says the climate controls are unreadable in daylight.

  • Exterior lights7No crashes

The recessed LED headlights pack with snow, slush, and ice in winter driving. The LEDs do not give off enough heat to melt it, so the light fades gradually until drivers have to pull over and clear the lamps. The other complaints describe the turn signal stalk bouncing into a three-flash left signal after a right turn, which one owner sees more than half the time, or the lever rising and canceling the signal. Dealers either have no fix or cannot reproduce the problem.

  • Body and structure41 crash

Water collects under the passenger footwell carpet. It brings a musty smell and raises concerns about mold and rust. The dealer could not reproduce the leak after two tries, and the owner later found it appeared with AC use. Two other reports describe dashboard glare on the windshield bad enough to hide a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The one crash-related complaint blames emergency braking that stutters to a stop instead of stopping at once and reacts to objects that are not there.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Equinox owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Wipers and visibility
The dashboard causes a serious glare that prevents visibility. GM has only offered a cheap dash mat as a fix and my local dealer says they don’t know anything about it. They should really replace the dash pad with the updated model and not just lay a piece of cheap carpet over the dashboard of my 50k dollar car. The attached photo dosent even do the problem justice. Due to the way camera lenses work it looks less severe in photos.

Wipers and visibility
There is a design flaw regarding the dashboard reflecting into the windshield. This is probably due to at least one of the following factors: a) the material and reflectivity of the dashboard b) the low angle of the windshield itself. The sun causes a reflection in the windshield that renders the driver functionally blind when driving into the sun at certain angles, and in particular moving from light to shadow. It is highly dangerous and disconcerting.

Electrical
The screen for the radio goes blank and then the dash goes blank this happend a few times randomly but this time it was longer and then it told me there was no key found in car while driving and I was at a light the car in front moved forward and I started and went forward and my car braked unexpectedly I adjusted the gap settings but I don’t believe this should have happened the car seemed far

Electrical
- The telematics module is bad, resulting in vehicle having no connectivity (GPS, entertaintment system, updates) - The car has no other means of hands-free operation for navigation software (no CarPlay or similar phone projection technology) - GM is unable or unwilling to supply the parts for warranty repair. - It is illegal to use the phone while operating vehicle in my state (Florida)

Automatic emergency brakingCrash reported
My vehicle seemed to accelerate when pulling into a parking spot at my work. It then launched over the curb sending me rolling down the hillside several feet. I required extraction and the car is now totaled. I am available to explain more and share pictures at your convince.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Automatic emergency braking
Automatic emergency braking engaged when there was no risk of a collision. I was in a roundabout (traffic circle) when the brakes suddenly engaged, nearly stopping my car. There was a car yielding to roundabout traffic ahead of me (waiting for me to clear before entering the roundabout). I was nearly rear ended by another car due to the sudden braking. I then disabled the automatic emergency braking feature to avoid similar “phantom” collision detections.

BrakesCrash reported
Traveling down a gravel road, down hill with security gate at bottom of hill. Traveled 100's of times. starting going down hill and used brakes to slow, no slowing. Pushed harder and still no slowing. As hard as possible and hit the gate lots of damage to car. It was as if there were no brakes. In fact I think the car speeded up and the brakes released all the way.

BrakesCrash reported
When you hit the brakes on hurry car don’t stop it rolls and take longer to engage. Was involved on a rear end accident because of saw the car in front stop press the brake and suv just slow down but keep rolling forward.

Where the 2025 fits in the Equinox's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2025 is the first model year of the Equinox's fourth generation (2025 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Chevrolet fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Recalls to confirm (5)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V878000Backup cameraDec 2025

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Equinox EV vehicles.
