Which Corolla is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Toyota Corolla. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

2.0L 4-cylGasFWD35 mpg
1.8L 4-cylHybridFWD52 mpg
  • The 2022 Toyota Corolla was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Corolla that averages well under the EPA 33 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Toyota Corolla, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical18No crashes

Sudden shutdowns lead the electrical complaints. The car stalls at a stop or while driving, the dash goes dark, and warnings such as "Steering Power Low" or "12-Volt Battery Charging; System Malfunction" appear. Steering can lock until the driver shifts to park and restarts. Some owners say the accelerator stops responding for several seconds. Dealers often find nothing, though one found a loose positive battery cable. Other reports cover a dead touchscreen, a rear USB port that melted charging cables, and a whining blower fan.

  • Transmission15No crashes

Stalling and lost acceleration at take-off are the most common drivetrain reports. The engine shuts off while pulling away from a stop or climbing a hill, sometimes right after auto stop/start restarts it. Failed coolant bypass valves trigger engine warnings and can fail again after replacement. On manual-transmission cars, the clutch slave cylinder fails and the pedal drops to the floor, with reports at 33,186 and 110,000 miles. Other reports include gears that will not engage, a detached shift linkage cable, and one fire in a parked car whose engine kept running.

  • Brakes123 crashes

Two problems dominate: brakes that do not stop the car, and rotors that overheat or warp. Three crash reports describe pressing the pedal without the car slowing, one while using adaptive cruise control, and injuries followed in two of them. Rotor complaints describe vibration, shudder through the wheel and pedal, grinding, and fade on hills, with brakes replaced or rotors resurfaced more than once. The electric parking brake can also refuse to release, which one dealer blamed on a weak battery. ABS and parking brake warnings also show up at startup.

  • Steering111 crash

Locked steering after the engine stalls at a stop is the dominant report, usually with an "engine stopped, steering power low" message. Many reports tie it to rain, running wipers, and auto stop/start. Drivers have to shift to park and restart in traffic, and some restarts take minutes. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. Fixes so far include new batteries, loose battery cables, and in one case the power steering ECU. One crash with two injuries followed warning lights and a loss of both brakes and steering.

  • Airbags109 crashes

The core complaint is air bags that do not deploy in serious crashes, with 9 crash reports and 8 injuries. Owners describe T-bone hits, frontal collisions, and highway sideswipes where no bags fired or only some did, often in cars later totaled. No warning lights came on before these crashes. One owner says a recall was issued 2 weeks before their crash with no notice, and a Corolla Cross owner received a letter warning that the passenger airbag may not deploy as designed.

  • Exterior lights7No crashes

Weak low beams are the main complaint. Owners say the headlights aim too low or throw too little light on curves and hills, which forces them onto high beams. One measured the light fading out at around 76 feet. Others report uneven brightness from side to side or a dead spot in one lamp. On the Corolla Cross, owners say lower trims have small, dim taillights that are hard to see from behind. Dealers tend to dismiss beam complaints as a matter of opinion.

  • Engine7No crashes

The clearest engine pattern is coolant bypass valve failure. Several cars need the valve replaced and the cooling system bled, one at 35K miles and others just after the warranty ran out. Owners were told the engine could fail if the valve was not fixed. The other recurring report is an engine that does not restart after auto stop/start shuts it off at a light. This usually happens in light rain with the wipers on, sometimes with a steering power warning and a wheel that will not turn.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

Water getting in leads the body complaints. Rain collects inside the doors on new cars, and the official advice is to pull the drain plugs. A Corolla Cross owner reports rain dripping into the cabin at about 31,500 miles. Other reports describe a front bumper that comes loose at highway speeds, a low front end that scrapes on steep driveways and cracks the bumper, and a hard, protruding driver door pull that bruised one owner's leg.

Electrical
Vehicle message flashes up: "Voltage abnormality Steering Power Low" and car shuts off entirely while driving!!!! A quick Google yields scores of other people experiencing the same problem, many of them bringing in the car to the dealership with no fix made! Only 5,000 miles on the car! Vehicle has been brought back to dealership after being towed home.

Electrical
There has been several instances where I’m trying to cross a divided Highway and the accelerator doesn’t respond. I’ve had three near death experiences. There’s been other times where it will just shut off and restart without a warning. It’s been in my driveway thankfully. When I pull out in front of someone, it doesn’t respond either. I have had the pedal all the way down to the floor and it wouldn’t go for about 5-6 seconds

Transmission
I bought a used 2022 Toyota Corolla LE but it is showing corrosion on the hood. The left axle is vibrating over 40 mph when accelerating, confirmed by a mechanic. Toyota tells me the warranty expired at 36,000 miles, my car has about 36,800.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Transmission
Transmission Malfunctioned on multiple occasions (would not go into gear). my safety was put at risk due to me not being able to move my car out of the road. Check engine light engaged at the time of the transmission failure.

SteeringCrash reported

Steering
Steering wheel when traveling at high speeds and low speeds seems to excessive movement. More pressure that i apply makes it worst to steering wheel.Light grip it goes away. Dealer hasn’t been able to replicate it. No warning lights while driving. When starting the car the steering wheel caution light comes on from red to yellow. One time I thought it went green hasn’t. Dealer said it was okay .

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Corolla Cross vehicles that were previously inspected at a dealership under recall 23V-384. The instrument panel may have been produced without the required perforation, which could result in the front-passenger air bag not deploying properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection.".

Risk: An air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury during a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the instrument panel as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 26, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TA16.
