Which K5 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Kia K5. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.6L 4-cylAWD, FWD28–31 mpg
2.5L 4-cylFWD27 mpg
  • The 2023 Kia K5 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A K5 that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Kia K5, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Fuel system25No crashes

The fuel tank swells while driving, often with a loud bang from the rear, and pushes the back seat up by several inches. Warning signs include a check engine light, fuel smell, a gauge that drops fast or reads wrong, and a pump nozzle that keeps clicking off. Jerking, loss of power, and stalling at highway speed follow. Some reports describe broken tank straps or a bent subframe. Dealers link it to a recall, but many cars sit undrivable for weeks, and several owners are offered buybacks. One injury is reported.

Most of these reports are about the recall. Owners get notices for fuel tank campaign 25V794000, but repair parts are unavailable or on back order, and the wait has no end date. When the tank does fail, drivers hear loud pops or booms underneath, lose power, smell fuel, watch the gauge drop, or see fuel spill from the filler neck. Some cars fail the recall inspection because the tank has already expanded. Those cars are declared unsafe and left unrepaired. One injury is reported.

  • Transmission11No crashes

Sudden loss of acceleration at highway speed is the main pattern. The car goes into limp mode, every warning light comes on, and RPMs rise with no gain in speed. Restarting often brings power back. Reports fall between 5k and 26k miles and often come back after dealers just reset codes. Several owners say a related recall does not cover their VIN. Others report harsh or hesitant shifts, shudder, slipping into neutral, and transmission replacements. A failed AWD coupler locked a rear wheel at 70 mph.

  • Body and structure91 crash

Exterior trim works loose and falls off. The chrome pieces around the rear window and the C-pillar trim near the trunk come up most. Pieces fly off at highway speed and nearly hit cars behind, and owners describe the problem as widespread. A detached front bumper clip also shows up. Separately, the panoramic sunroof glass shatters on its own, both parked and while driving, and throws glass onto the road. One crash-related report gives no details.

  • Engine5No crashes

Power drops away or the car shuts off in the middle of the road, sometimes with a burning smell, and afterward it barely moves. Another report describes a failed engine diagnosed right after purchase, followed by a buyback offer. Sputtering and weak acceleration persist for some owners even after new spark plugs. One complaint here is actually a fuel tank failure that blew the back seat loose. A separate owner says fuel economy falls short of the advertised figures, averaging 24 city and 27 highway.

  • Airbags43 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in serious crashes. Reports include a front airbag that stayed off in a head-on collision that totaled the car and a side airbag that never fired in a passenger-side impact. In another crash, the frontal airbag went off with enough force to cause chemical burns and a concussion. Three of the four reports involve crashes, and injuries are reported. The fourth complaint is about a fuel tank recall delay, not airbags.

  • Brakes31 crash

The brake pedal fails without warning. At low speed it goes soft and sinks to the floor, which led to a rear-end crash with an injury. During a highway tire blowout, the pedal locked solid while every warning light came on, leaving the driver unable to brake. Early wear is also reported, with front pads and rotors needing replacement at 8300 miles of light commuting.

  • Seats2No crashes

Both reports trace back to the fuel tank, not the seats. The tank bursts at highway speed, lifts the rear seats, and cuts engine power in fast traffic. Before that, owners describe months of popping sounds, fuel odor, check engine lights, and failed emissions tests. Repeated dealer visits, including a purge control valve repair, do not fix the problem. Three injuries are reported.

  • Automatic emergency braking21 crash

Driver-assist systems shut off or fail to act. In one crash, the car shifted out of neutral in an automatic car wash and bumped the vehicle ahead with no warning and no automatic braking. Another owner sees warning lights on every start, with power steering, cruise control, and lane departure all disabled at once.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints K5 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Fuel system
The gas tank wii not allow you to put gas in it. When you try to put gas in it won't go down in the tank hose and the fuel gauge is ready a 1/4 tank. The car jerks when pressing on the gas pedal. I have only gone around 200 miles and gauge fluctuates with different reads so you don't know exactly how much gas is in the gas tank. The engine light is on as. This is happening while I am traveling.

Fuel system
Heard and felt extremely loud BANG under the car while driving then check engine light came on. Vehicle had low power and the gas was decreasing severely fast. The backseat had moved with our 2yr daughter in her car seat above it. Took it to dealership and they said the gas tank expanded and couldn't be fixed. They offered bottom dollar to buy it back

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Transmission
Transmission is itself in neutral while driving. Resulting in irratic RPMs, hesitating acceleration and rough transition to gears. Took care into dealership service department. They seemed that I would need a transmission replacement. Kia approved the request. Still waiting on transmission to be put in.

Body and structure
at 2:30 PM i had noticed that my passenger rear trim, right above my trunk was loose. I made note of it. about three hours later, i was driving down the interstate and i noticed it came off and was flying through the air. Thankfully it didn’t hit another vehicle but this isn’t the first time I have had issues with the trim and a lot of other k5 owners have had issues as well.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Body and structure
Front driver side bottom bumper has unclipped randomly. I’ve spoken to a group with other 2023 Kia K5 GT-Line owners and at minimum 30 others have had the same exact clip from the bumper randomly detach. This could cause a hazard for other drivers if the bumper were to detach and possibly hang while driving at a high speed on the freeway.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Engine
MPG is lower then number provided by both dealer and manufactorer (my average 24 city 27 highway ) factoring that i rarely even use climate controls and other fuel consuming things and often turn off engine in mcdonald's drive thru lane

Filed with NHTSA, October 2022

Engine
Loss of power even hitting the gas. Sputters and does not accelerate. Had spark plugs changed thinking it will resolve the problem and it didn't. Severe safety hazard even needed to get up speed

Where the 2023 fits in the K5's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2023 is the third model year of the K5's fifth generation (2021–2023).

Kia updated the K5 for 2025, so a 2023 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2023)

  • Redesigned headlights and taillights
  • Updated interior with new technology
