Which Model S is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Tesla Model S. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD | 405 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 405 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Low-speed unintended acceleration
300–600 miles
Front suspension link failure, noise
45,000–68,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Tesla Model S, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Automatic emergency braking33313 crashes
Phantom braking dominates. The car brakes hard at highway speed with nothing ahead, on Autopilot, on cruise control, and sometimes in manual driving with emergency braking turned off. Some drivers report it about once every 100 miles, often near hill crests or when passing trucks. Crash reports describe Autopilot steering abruptly into barriers, often in rain, and automatic braking that skids the car on wet pavement. Others say the system missed stopped cars or objects. Smart Summon and Autopark collisions with parked cars and poles also appear. Of 333 complaints, 13 involve crashes.
Acceleration and cruise control14812 crashes
Sudden unintended acceleration is the main pattern, usually at parking speed: pulling into a space, creeping through a drive-through line, or sitting stopped. Drivers say the car surged and the brakes did not stop it. These reports end in hits on cars, trees, buildings, and garage contents. Several cases occur within the first few hundred miles. A second group describes phantom braking on adaptive cruise control at 70 to 75 mph, sometimes several times on one trip. The category lists 12 crashes, 7 injuries, and one fire.
Electrical12612 crashes
Crash reports here mostly repeat the unintended acceleration and Autopilot swerving seen in other categories, including surges while shifting gears and spins into median walls. Other failures are electrical in the plain sense. Screens go dark while driving, and some drivers report a total loss of power with unresponsive brakes. One report describes a fatal fire in which the door handle would not open. Windows closing on fingers draw complaints. Heat pump failures leave the car with no cabin heat or defrost in winter, and one owner quotes $3,000 per repair. There are 12 crash reports and 10 injuries.
Steering11712 crashes
The wheel locks or stiffens without warning at speeds from a parking-garage crawl to 70 mph, sometimes with a "steering assist reduced" message. Several drivers say the brakes also failed and the car hit guardrails, medians, or a semi. In other reports, Autopilot jerks the wheel in light rain and sends the car into a slide. One owner whose car was out of warranty was told a steering rack replacement could cost $2,500. Some drivers also say the button horn is hard to find in an emergency. The category lists 12 crashes and 6 injuries.
Brakes1057 crashes
Phantom braking is the most frequent issue. On Autopilot or adaptive cruise, the car brakes hard on an open highway with no warning, dropping from 65 mph to about 30 mph or to almost a stop. On long trips, some drivers count 20 or more events. A smaller group says the brake pedal did not stop the car at parking speed, or that automatic emergency braking did not react to a car stopping ahead. Strong regenerative braking is blamed for slides on snow and ice. Seven complaints involve crashes.
Suspension534 crashes
Front suspension failure is the clearest pattern, though most of these reports were filed about the Model Y. Lower lateral links separate from the subframe after their bolts loosen or fall out, and a corner of the car drops in traffic. Creaking and groaning in low-speed turns often comes first, starting around 45,000 miles. Model S owners describe an "Adaptive ride control unavailable" warning that limits speed, and one was told air suspension repairs cost about $6,000. Rear tires that keep wearing on the inside edge despite repeated alignments also show up. Four complaints involve crashes.
Transmission273 crashes
Cars lurch forward from a stop or when shifted, roll backward at a stop or on an incline, and spin suddenly in rain at highway speed. Beyond that, reports are scattered. Fire reports describe a parked car burning and a window module that overheated and melted the inside of a door. Owners also report "power limited" slowdowns that service cannot diagnose, failed heat pump and air conditioning units, a battery replacement at about 30,000 miles, a flickering main screen, and grinding under acceleration. Three complaints involve crashes.
Lane keeping196 crashes
Driver-assist steering errors lead this category. Full Self-Driving or Autosteer crosses the center line partway through a curve, veers into the wrong lane on turns, or heads for exit ramps at highway speed. In one case, lane assist pulled the car back toward an obstacle the driver was steering around. Autopilot shutting off on curved exit ramps led to guardrail and curb scrapes. Side pillar cameras fogging with condensation or water, which blinds the system, is a recurring complaint that does not involve a crash. Six of 19 complaints involve crashes.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Model S owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I too have had an issue were without warning or provocation when on cruise control, whenever a semi-truck approached in the oncoming lane, or on four-lane divided highways, my car decelerated from 75 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. I have also had the car phantom break when going under a overpass on a highway and while crossing 2 lane bridges. Luckily no accidents so far but definitely terrifying.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2022
When placed in cruise control (which is called TACC: traffic aware cruise control), and driving on 2 lanes road, the car frequently (more than 10 times over 20 miles) slams on the brakes when incoming large vehicles on the other lane. This is generating dangerous situation with following cars being surprised for sudden (and unwarranted) braking occurs. I have a dash cam video of one such incidents
Filed with NHTSA, December 2021
when travelling around 70-75 miles on AutoPilot car makes strong brakes which is known as phantom breaking. This is happening every single day on highway which is really scary.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2022
I was about to park the car in my garage and stopped midway down my driveway to take a phone call. After the phone call, I changed it from park to to drive by stepping on the brake and lightly stepped on the accelerator to ease it into the garage. It quickly accelerated. I stepped on the brake to stop it but it failed to stop. It crashed into my refrigerator in the garage. A video is available for you to view

Power was lost completely while car was on the road, breaks stop working and unable to stop. Driver had to go off road to prevent collision and road a accident. Towed to Tesla center. Diagnosis is “internal short” but did not elaborate. No explanation and answer why break did not work. External damage due to accident was not covered.

The heater of the vehicle just stop working, due to MN cold weather and since there is no heat and just cold air blowing. It freezes the windshield and frost would build up with out any way to melt it since there’s no heat. It also fogs up the interior in the car since you can’t open the windows due MN minus windchill weathers. It’s hard to see and keep warm in a cold climate state. Tesla doesn’t see this is an emergency and it’s very concerning
Filed with NHTSA, January 2022
Went to a Tesla dealership to get my car aligned. 4 days later they told me that my car couldn’t be aligned because my fron lower control arm was bent or broken. I purchased the car from Tesla with 5700 miles. The cad had about 19k miles when it went in for alignment. Seen owning the vehicle I never had an accident or damage to vehicle that would cause such damage. Like always they like to blame the customer to we can cover the defects of there vehicles.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2023
Vehicle began making loud creaking noise audible at all speeds, loudest at low speeds. Car was maintained by Tesla dealership. Failure occurred at approximately 52,000 miles, just after 50,000 warranty expired. Diagnosed as failure of both control arms which need to be replaced at significant expense. Failure should not happen on such a low mileage and newer vehicle.
