Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical6No crashes

The 48-volt battery dies early and leaves the car unable to start or move, sometimes before 1,000 miles. Cars get towed for a battery replacement, and one owner waits more than three weeks for the part. Warnings that the 12-volt battery is low show up along with camera dropouts and an accelerator that does not respond. In the one fire-related report, the car smokes and catches fire at idle after a 12 Volt Battery message. Other reports cite misfires, power loss at a light, and an overheating warning that slows the car below 20 mph.

  • Engine3No crashes

Cylinder misfires turn on the check engine light and put the car in limp mode, which cuts power, even on the freeway. A dealer traces one case to a leaking exhaust valve on cylinder 4, tied to a service bulletin on valve seat wear in M260 engines. Mercedes denies warranty coverage, and one repair estimate is over $7,600. The 48-volt mild hybrid battery also fails within weeks of delivery. The car will not start and needs a flatbed tow, with repeat replacements at 196 and 735 miles.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The transmission fails completely at low mileage, at about 15,000 and 22,000 miles in these reports. One failure happens at highway speed. The driver gets off the highway, but the car cannot move afterward and the owner is stranded. Neither report describes warning signs before the failure, a dealer diagnosis, or how the repair turned out. With only 2 complaints, the pattern is thin, but both describe a total loss of the transmission rather than a minor drivability quirk.

  • Backup camera2No crashes

The rearview camera and 360 view do not appear in reverse, often with a system inoperative message, and the parking sensors can drop out at the same time. Restarting the car does not always bring the image back. The fault comes and goes and gets more frequent over 2 years, which makes it hard to show a dealer. Losing the camera and sensors reduces awareness of what is behind the car and raises crash risk when backing up. Owners connect the problem to recall campaign 21V228000.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints E-Class owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
48Volt battery failed after three months and just 3,400 miles. I understand this is a recurring problem with Mercedes. Car had to be towed as the vehicle was totally inoperable due to battery malfunction. It took more than three weeks for Mercedes to provide a replacement battery. From what I have read, there is a strong likelihood that the battery will fail again.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2021

Electrical
FIRE FIRE FIRE Information light came on just saying 12 Volt Battery. I sat in the car letting it idle for about 3 minutes. It began to smoke and then burst into flames. I called 911 got the fire department here but by the time they were here there was not much left. The car essentially burned to the ground and insurance has declared it a total loss. Car was in my driveway, was certainly a danger to me, to my house and to my neighbor's cars and house.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Engine
Engine keeps having a misfire that Mercedes put a TSB out for and once the misfire happen I cause the vehicle to go in a limp mode which causes the vehicle to loose power happened to me in the freeway. The car had 54K miles and Mercedes refused to repair the issue as the engine part failure isn’t common.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Transmission
The Mercedes E350, with 22,000 miles suffered a catastrophic transmission failure while driving on the highway. I managed to exit the highway but the car could not be moved and left me stranded.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
With the car only have about 15,000 miles the transmission has failed . I have seen there have been recalls of other models with similar complaints of transmission failure .

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Backup camera
I was parking and the 360 view sensor did not come up. When I tried to back out and move forward again, I realized the back up camera would not come on. I turned the car on and off and then tried again to reverse to engage the camera but was instead given a message that says system inoperative.
