Which Legacy is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Subaru Legacy. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cyl | AWD | 29 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cyl | AWD | 23 mpg |
- The 2019 Subaru Legacy was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Legacy that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Subaru Legacy, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Wipers and visibility48No crashes
Windshields crack with little or no impact, often while the car sits parked overnight or in a garage. Reports describe a pop followed by a crack running from the lower edge across the glass, and a tiny chip can spread to a foot or more within hours. Repeat failures are common. Some cars are on a third or fourth windshield, and replacement glass cracks too. Early cracks appear around 3,300 to 5,500 miles. Dealers often decline coverage, owners pay out of pocket, and many see the weakened glass as a safety risk.
Windshield glass cracks without any impact. In one report this happened at about 50,000 miles, and the manufacturer said it could not help after the glass was replaced. The other complaint concerns the driver's side mirror, which cannot be angled to show a car in the blind spot, and a blind spot warning light that comes on inconsistently. With only two reports, no broader pattern is visible here.
Electrical34No crashes
The infotainment touchscreen delaminates, with bubbles or white spots behind the glass. It then registers phantom touches, skips radio stations, refuses to turn off, and dials phone contacts unprompted. Spots can block the backup camera view. Reports place this between 34,000 and 50,000 miles. A second pattern is a battery that dies after the car sits for a few days. New batteries do not fix it, and owners and shops point to a parasitic drain from the DCM module. One report describes the engine racing past 6000 RPM at a stop while the brakes held the car.
Engine5No crashes
Reports are few and scattered. A plugged catalytic converter at 56,000 miles overheated and damaged the O2 sensors, lit the check engine light, and switched off safety features. Another car leaks oil from the cam carrier seal at 80,000 miles, and its owner worries about oil dripping onto the exhaust. Other complaints describe oil burning without a visible leak, brief stalls with an odd engine noise at about 15,000 miles, and repeated dead batteries from a parasitic drain.
Fuel system4No crashes
Power drops off when pulling away from a stop. The engine hesitates, shakes, and feels close to stalling, sometimes in the middle of an intersection with traffic behind. Reports place this around 56,000 to 65,000 miles, and owners suspect the fuel pump. In one case the pump failed outright and the car shut down near a busy intersection without warning. The remaining complaint is a dealer dispute over which service bulletin steps to perform during fuel tank work.
Acceleration and cruise control32 crashes
EyeSight driver aids fail to prevent low-speed collisions. Two of the three complaints involve crashes. In one, reverse automatic braking did not stop the car before it backed into a parked vehicle. In the other, adaptive cruise accelerated into the car ahead without a warning. The third describes a sudden loss of speed control in heavy highway traffic. The driver later traced it to cruise control switched on by accidentally pressing a steering wheel button.
Steering3No crashes
The wheel can lose power assist or move on its own. One report describes power steering that stops working. Another describes the wheel turning left unprompted at 30 mph, then jerking left and stiffening during a turn at 45 mph, at only 2,400 miles. The dealer could not reproduce it, and warning lights appeared later. A third describes a dead spot on center and a change in feel while unwinding out of highway curves, with the car turning in harder than expected.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Legacy owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The windshield has chipped and cracked excessively with no cause. I have a low mileage vehicle that has now experienced 4 separate incidents where the windshield chipped and/or cracked with very little impact. On one occasion, the car was stopped completely but suddenly the windshield popped and cracked directly in front of the driver. I am afraid to drive the car for fear that the windshield is a danger to me and my passengers.

The "infotainment system" screen is delaminating. I can not see my surroundings when in reverse. The system is paired with my mobile telephone and randomly calls persons in my contact list without my requesting it do so. The radio can not be turned off and it consistently makes noises as if it is attempting to scan different radio stations. These defects first appeared at 34,000 miles, well below the 36,000 mile warranty period.

Purchased used vehicle in October 2020 with 1800 mileage. In April 2021 at 4000+ miles the vehicle (garage-kept) would not start. Attempted to recharge the battery 3 times over several days but it would not maintain the charge. Needed to call Roadside Assistance and have vehicle towed to the dealership (25 minutes away from my home). Dealership service department drained/dead battery and replaced with new battery.

catalytic converter plugged at 56,000 miles. cause the catalytic converter to get red hot and melt o2 sensors. this caused the cel to eliminate and make the safety features turn off. I plugged an obd2 reader in to the car and diagnosed the problem. I had to replace the entire catalytic converter assembly under the as well as all of the o2 sensors.

The Cam Carrier has a leak due to Subaru using a cheap sealant. My car only has 80,000 miles and it is leaking. The subaru is know for this leak after researching it online. They say it is a safety issue cause the oil can fall on the exhaust making in a fire issue.
