Which Legacy is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Subaru Legacy. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cyl | AWD | 29 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cyl | AWD | 23 mpg |
- The 2018 Subaru Legacy was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Legacy that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Subaru Legacy, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical38No crashes
The touchscreen delaminates. Bubbling under the glass sets off ghost touches that change stations, open menus, and dial calls with no input, and some screens freeze or ignore touch entirely. Owners call the screen a driving distraction and describe replacements as costly, with some head units swapped more than once. Fuel gauges also misread, and cars run dry while still showing 30 to 40 miles of range. Other reports cover battery drain while parked, a keyless system that left the car unable to start, and one fire at the driver-side mirror.
Wipers and visibility27No crashes
Windshields crack with no visible impact. The crack usually starts at a lower edge, often on the passenger side near the wipers or defrost vents, and then spreads across the glass. It happens while the car sits parked overnight, on the highway, after a car wash, or while warming up on a cold morning. Replacement windshields often crack again in the same spot, and owners report paying for repeat replacements themselves. Reports start under 20,000 miles, and some describe a crack between the EyeSight cameras.
Windshields crack without impact, usually at a lower corner, and the crack then spreads upward. The car is often parked or cruising at highway speed when it happens. Failures cluster around 30,000 to 38,153 miles, with one at 65,000, and at least one replacement windshield cracked again. Dealers tend to send owners to a glass shop. A sunroof shattering with a loud pop at 72,000 miles and a display that went blank while driving round out the group.
Engine42 crashes
Sudden, unintended acceleration accounts for both crash reports here. The car lurches forward while stopped with the brake lightly pressed, or while being moved from a parked spot, and in each case it struck another vehicle. One crash totaled the car. Separately, an engine burns excess oil and lights the oil warning lamp at 18,000 miles, and dealers could not fix it. Another report describes the front catalytic converter failing twice, at 130k and 180k miles, with exhaust fumes entering the cabin.
Steering4No crashes
Above about 50 mph, the car pulls or suddenly veers left or right as if hit by a gust of wind, with no wind or passing truck. Drivers describe losing steering control for several seconds, and one report says the car drifted off the road. The problem shows up as early as 3,000 miles and repeats at random. Another owner lists two steering rack replacements, followed by sway bar link, strut mount, and torn bushing repairs needed to finish an alignment.
Acceleration and cruise control32 crashes
The car speeds up or brakes on its own, and two of the 3 complaints involve crashes. In one, it stopped suddenly on a freeway with no brake input and was hit from behind. In another, it would not slow with the brakes held down after pulling away from an intersection, and it struck a utility pole and a parked car. Neither driver could reproduce the problem or point to a clear warning. The third complaint is about cruise control setting speed in 1 or 5 mph steps, not a failure.
Body and structure3No crashes
Clear coat fails in under 2 years, even on cars detailed regularly. Both front doors can rust through from the inside at the door pillars, and that report describes perforation rather than surface rust. A separate complaint describes a loud metallic rattle between 25 and 45 mph that the dealer could not locate or repair after more than 4 attempts. With only 3 complaints on file, no clear pattern emerges yet.
Fuel system3No crashes
The fuel gauge reads wrong. It stays frozen over long drives, then jumps between levels after a restart, and owners cannot trust the low-fuel reading. One car spent 11 weeks at the dealer before getting a new instrument cluster, and a manufacturer letter told another owner it did not know when or if a fix would come. Separately, a 3.6R hesitates or stutters under gentle acceleration from a stop, a problem present since purchase.
Brakes21 crash
The car keeps moving even with the brake pressed. In the crash report, it suddenly sped up in reverse while backing out of a parking space, ignored the brake pedal, and ran down a row of parked cars until it clipped one. In the other, the car crept forward at an intersection with the brake applied and kept moving even in Park, stopping only after the emergency brake was pulled. These are 2 complaints, 1 of them crash-related.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Legacy owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
This vehicle currently has about 55,000 miles on it. I recently had to replace the battery which seems premature for a vehicle just over three years old (at 48865 miles). I have recently been made aware that it is alleged that this Subaru model is defective in such a way to precipitate early battery failure. I want my experience added to that of others. I have documentation of this battery replacement which I could supply upon request.

I bought my Subaru brand new directly through them in September 2017. Not too long after the warranty deadline (2018 timeframe) my entire touchscreen randomly stopped working. Subaru had said there was nothing they could do without having to replace the entire system. It randomly does its own thing clicking on different buttons like someone is pressing them. There was nothing that happened prior this that would affect the touchscreen from stopping to work.

I have had the windshield replaced in this vehicle three times in less than one year. I recently took my car through a car wash that I use regularly and the next day, there was a new crack on the lower passenger side of the windshield. This is getting expensive to fix and seems to be a defect with the windshield.

I have a 2018 Subaru Legacy 2.5. The front catalytic converter failed April 2022 with 130k miles. the part was replace by Subaru and the part has failed again. Oct 2023 with 180k miles. Exhaust fumes enter the passenger compartment (which are Carbon Monoxide). The same part has failed two times in a short period of time. Subaru states this is not a warranty issue .This must become a recall.

A friend was trying to move the car from the street when it suddenly lurched and accelerated and hit a tree, and boulder, and another car. They had not stepped on the accelerator yet. She lost control of the car. It was totaled as per State Farm.

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Ascent, 2018 Forester, 2018-2020 Impreza, Legacy, Outback, 2018-2019 BRZ, WRX, and Toyota 86 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
Risk: Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will replace the low-pressure fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 24, 2021. Subaru and Toyota owners may call customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRG-21.
18V935000Wipers and visibilityDec 2018
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2018 Legacy, Outback, and BRZ vehicles. In the affected vehicles, a software issue may cause the audio display system to not initialize, resulting in the camera display remaining blank. If this occurs, the rearview image will not display while backing up the vehicle. As a result, the vehicles fail to comply with requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors.".
Risk: Failure to display the rearview image while backing up increases the risk of crash.
Fix: Subaru has notified owners, and dealers will reprogram the audio system display software, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WTZ-85.
18V773000ElectricalNov 2018
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2018 Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles. Due to a software error, the low fuel warning light may not illuminate at the intended remaining fuel level and the miles-to-empty display may incorrectly indicate a positive number despite the tank being empty.
Risk: The inaccurate fuel display may cause a driver to unexpectedly run out of fuel and the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the combination meter software, free of charge. The recall began February 20, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WTW-82.
