Which Elantra is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Hyundai Elantra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.4L 4-cylFWD35 mpg
1.6L 4-cylFWD29 mpg
2.0L 4-cylFWD33 mpg
  • The 2019 Hyundai Elantra was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Elantra that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Hyundai Elantra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine781 crash

Sudden stalling or seizure without warning is the main failure, often in traffic or at highway speed. Reports describe knocking, rough idle, cylinder misfires, stalling at stops, and heavy oil burning with no visible leaks. Several end in a seized engine or a thrown rod, with failures reported at 34,000, 66,000 and 85,320 miles. Many owners link the symptoms to an engine recall. They say dealers told them their VIN was not covered or refused warranty help. One report involves a crash and one an injury.

  • Exterior lights471 crash

High beams stop working even though the dash shows them on. The car uses one bulb for both beams, and reports blame a failed actuator or internal flap in the headlight assembly. Failures cluster between 40,000 and 52,000 miles and often hit both sides. New bulbs do not fix it. Dealers point to a service bulletin and headlight recall, but owners report back-ordered assemblies, denied coverage and repairs near $500 per side. One crash involved deer strikes at night with no high beams.

  • Electrical313 crashes

Two problems dominate. Headlights and high beams keep failing, and the car stalls or shuts off while driving, sometimes without restarting. Stalls usually come with no warning lights, and some owners connect them to the engine recall. New bulbs, headlight assemblies and alternators often do not cure it. One dealer quoted over $2,000 for a high-beam repair. Other reports describe blind-spot warnings that shut themselves off and a theft tied to the anti-theft software campaign. Three reports involve crashes, with 2 injuries.

  • Transmission10No crashes

Shifting turns hard, jerky or delayed in both upshifts and downshifts, whether cold or warm and in any drive mode. Other reports describe a rough idle that shakes the car at start-up, slipping on gentle acceleration, hesitation at 60 to 70 mph, and the engine shutting off at idle or around 30 mph with no warning light. Dealers and mechanics often cannot reproduce the problem. Reported mileages fall around 55,000 and 63,000. One owner was referred to the engine recall.

  • Steering92 crashes

A wheel that locks or seizes while driving appears in two crash reports, and in one of them the car caught fire and the trapped driver died. Other complaints describe grinding or rubbing when turning, a wheel that will not return to center, and shaking above 60 mph. Several filings are really about theft. Thieves tore down the column and started the car with a USB cord, including after the immobilizer fix was installed. Two reports involve crashes and two involve fire.

  • Acceleration and cruise control41 crash

The car stalls while moving, refuses to accelerate, or revs high without picking up speed. Knocking and a check engine light come with some of these reports. One crash happened when the accelerator stuck and the car failed to stop. One owner reports repeated stalls after a camshaft replacement. Another got an engine recall notice but was told the part was unavailable and the repair would wait months. The reports mostly point back to engine trouble rather than a separate throttle fault.

  • Seat belts3No crashes

Belts lock up or fail to retract. One driver belt stayed pulled out after years of slow retracting. A rear belt cinched tight on a child in a car seat and had to be cut, and the dealer quoted $621 outside warranty. Another report describes the seat belt sensor going off with less than 10 lbs on the seat, and even with the seat empty. There are only 3 complaints, so these are isolated reports, not a broad pattern.

  • Brakes21 crash

The brake pedal goes to the floor or responds slowly, so stopping distances get longer. In one crash report the pedal failed after a deer strike at about 6,000 miles, and the driver used the emergency brake to stop. The other report describes a rubbing noise, delayed response and a brake warning light, plus sluggish acceleration from a stop. With 2 complaints, there is no clear pattern, but both describe reduced stopping ability.

Engine
The manufacture looked at the vehicle and stated the car engine has siezed. Safety was put at risk because i was driving down my street home when the engine made a noise and it stopped all together. I was going about 10 miles per hour, so no actual injuries. The issue has been confirmed by the Hyundai Dealership. There were no warning lights or anything prior to the engine being siezed. The vehicle has been serviced regularly.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2022

Exterior lights
High beams are not working on both headlight assemblies. Car uses a bulb with 1 filament and actuator to simulate a high beam and both headlight assembly actuators failed on a car with 51k miles. Hyundai has a TSB for this issue, so they are aware of this issue and this needs to be a recall, not just a TSB as this is a major safety issue.

My car started hesitating when shifting gears in smart and normal mode smelled like something was burning. Car only drives in sport mode, shifts hard, engine lags, and the check engine light has not come on. This is the second incident with this car. Recall repairs are free at any Hyundai dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V301000EngineApr 2021

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Elantra, 2019-2021 Kona and Veloster vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage.

Risk: A damaged engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine, free of charge. In addition, Hyundai will deploy Piston Ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software. Owner notification letters were mailed August 24, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.
