Which Telluride is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Kia Telluride. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.8L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 21–23 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Telluride that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Kia Telluride, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical322 crashes
The digital instrument cluster goes black, removing speed, fuel level, turn-signal sounds, and warning lights. It happens in the first few hundred miles and also near 30,000 and 82,000 miles. Some cars light up every driver-assist warning at once, then lose power steering or shut down in traffic. Fuel gauges zero out or show fuel when the tank is empty. Dealers often cannot reproduce the faults. Door trim detaching at speed with water getting inside, and a tow hitch harness module fire recall with no remedy at the time, are also reported. Two complaints involve crashes and one involves fire.
Wipers and visibility23No crashes
Windshields crack with no clear impact, often within the first few thousand miles. Small chips spread across the glass within hours, even while the car sits parked, which rules out a repair. Several cars have needed two windshield replacements in under 18 months. Less common reports include the rear panoramic sunroof shattering while parked, side glass cracking, the passenger wiper stopping in heavy rain, weak washer spray, and a dark shadow across the windshield when the low beams are on.
Transmission171 crash
With Snow mode selected, the accelerator stops responding when pulling away from a stop, most often during a left turn. RPMs may rise while the car only creeps forward. Switching modes or restarting brings power back. Many cases occur under 1,000 miles with no warning lights, and dealers cannot duplicate them. AWD couplers fail repeatedly, and some replacements fail too. Other reports cover rear differential noise, a missing driveshaft bolt causing vibration above 40 mph, rough 1-2 shifts, and the roll-away recall. One crash followed a car rolling backward after being put in Park.
Body and structure11No crashes
Door belt molding and body trim loosen and detach, sometimes nearly flying off at highway speed. A recall exists, but remedy parts are not yet available, and one owner reports dealers refusing the car on trade while recalls stay open. Glass sunroofs burst while driving, scattering tempered glass inside and outside the cabin. Windshields crack without any impact. One injury came from a lane sensor on the mirror that burst at 30 mph. Peeling clear coat on pearl white paint is also reported.
Steering9No crashes
Power steering cuts out suddenly while driving, usually with a flood of warnings for the collision sensor, AWD, blind spot, and parking sensors. Some cars then shut down completely, lose power brakes, or lock the steering wheel, stranding drivers in traffic. Repeat tows and dealer stays of several weeks are common. Attempted fixes include a new battery and a loose connection, and neither held. Other reports describe the wheel jerking hard to one side across the centerline and a clicking column when turning.
Suspension6No crashes
Rear self-leveling shocks fail, causing clunking, thumping, and constant creaking over small bumps. Failures show up as early as 9,000 miles and before 20K miles. Warranty replacements do not always last, and some dealers refuse to replace the shocks a second time. Kia service staff have told owners this is a known issue on the 2023 model. Owners worry about losing control if the shocks fail completely.
Engine5No crashes
A fire broke out near the rear of one car around 20,000 miles and went out on its own, with no warning lights. Another engine developed a ticking noise and metal shavings near 7500 miles and was replaced after a national backorder. Other complaints describe failed engine mounting bolts, a serpentine belt screaming on cold starts before 40,000 miles, and an A/C condenser failure that dealers blame on rock damage and refuse to cover, with a reported repair cost of $1800.
Acceleration and cruise control4No crashes
The accelerator stops responding or hesitates when pulling away from a stop. This happens mostly in Snow mode and sometimes during turns. Moving the dial to another drive mode brings power back. One owner says the hesitation later appeared in other traction modes too. Failures appear as early as 500 miles. Dealers cannot duplicate the problem, and one technician linked it to deep snow. The main risk is a near rear-end collision while merging or crossing traffic.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Telluride owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I have owned the car for 2 months. For the 3rd time while pulling out into traffic the car refused to accelerate like it was having trouble with transmission(this made it dangerous for me pulling into busy traffic) For 10 to 20 seconds it would not accelerate and then finally it would operate as normal. The last time it happened when it kicked into gear the car jumped and it made a loud noise. This refusal to accelerate happened 3 different times

Digital display is black on my 2023 Kia Telluride while vehicle is running and being driven. I am unable to see my speed or any other important safety details. This is the first time this has happened and I have not reported it yet to any dealer, independent service center, insurance representative, etc. There were no observable warning lamps messages or symptoms prior to this incident which occurred on 3/27/25 at 1741 hours.

Had to get the front windshield replaced with only about 2,000 miles on the car, had a crack across the entire windshield. Now with only about 6,000 miles. I have another chip on my windshild. I barely drive on the freeway and have nomal driving conditions. This shouldn't be an issue on a new car. Windshield is fragile and makes me worried glass is unsafe.

My windshield failed. I have 2401 miles on the car and out of nowhere it had a huge crack the next day when I went to take my kids to school. It puts us at risk of shattering at any moment. It gets bigger as the days past. Yes I have reported it. It has been happening to a lot of 23 Telluride owners. No warning light or anything came on.

Vehicle began to shake when approaching 40mph or greater. Mechanic at dealership stated bolt from driveshaft to rear coupler was missing with two other bolts loose. Missing bolt threads were rusted as if bolt was never installed from factory as vehicle only has 12,000 miles. No warning messages displayed, only symptom was vibrations when approaching 40mph or greater.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2024
It had snowed in DC area. Vehicle was in snow mode, idle at stop light. When light turned green, slow acceleration turning left and then when pressing down on pedal, all acceleration stopped. Roads were cleared with no signs of snow or ice. Frightened driver and children in vehicle. Were able to coast to the side of the road, turned off vehicle and restarted and able to drive off. Clearly seems to be an issue with “snow” mode.

Driving down a road. No other vehicles on the road ahead of me nor coming from the opposite direction. There were no trees or structures overhead. The road had some dips, but nothing overly rough or upsetting. A crack appeared on the right side of the windshield and started to spread. There were no chips or other visible damage on the windshield previous to this incident. The crack as since spread and will have to be replaced.

The body trim is starting to fall off. I have at least 2 trims that are barely hanging on. this has been a problem on my vehicle since December 2024. A recall was issued August 2025 but no remedy is available and still not available even after letters have been sent out to owners. I am afraid to drive my vehicle and it seems like Kia doesn't care. I don't understand why they can't fix this problem
