Which Grand Cherokee is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L 6-cylGas | AWD, RWD | 22 mpg |
| 5.7L 8-cylGas | AWD | 17 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | 4WD | 470 mi range |
- The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Grand Cherokee that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical1282 crashes
The most common failure is a sudden loss of power while driving, often at highway speed. The dash flashes warnings, the car may shift itself into park, or 4xe models show a "Service Hybrid System" message. Other reports describe phantom emergency braking, steering and brakes going heavy, both batteries draining, and screens, locks, windows and cameras quitting. Many problems start within the first few thousand miles. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault, and some cars sit in the shop for weeks or months. These complaints include 2 crashes, 1 fire and 3 injuries. Some cite recall 25V576000.
Suspension51No crashes
Rear coil springs come loose, sometimes while the car is parked and sometimes at highway speed. The rear end drops, or the spring jams into the tire. Many reports tie this to recall 23V413000. Several owners say the spring fell out again after the recall repair, and others were told their VIN was not covered. Separate complaints describe Quadra-Lift air suspension failures, a sheared tension link bolt and a cracked rail. Inner tire wear is hard to see and was reported worn to 0 depth at 15,000 miles.
Steering412 crashes
Power steering assist cuts out suddenly and leaves the wheel very heavy. It usually comes with a flood of warnings for lane assist, blind spot monitoring, ABS and adaptive cruise. Some cars will not restart afterward and need a tow. Several reports link the failure to wider electrical or hybrid faults. Other complaints cover a failed steering column control module that disables lights, wipers and turn signals, repeated alignment and toe link problems, and a clicking noise when turning. These complaints include 2 crashes and 1 injury, and recall 24V132 is cited in one rollover.
Transmission25No crashes
Sudden loss of propulsion leads these complaints, mostly on 4xe plug-in hybrids. It comes with a "Service Hybrid System" warning or a prompt to put the car in park before restarting. It happens at highway speed and in heavy traffic. Dealers often say no fix exists beyond software updates. Some owners cite recall 25V576 and code B273C-00. Other reports describe violent downshifts, a transmission stuck in 8th gear, the car moving forward while in reverse, drivetrain grinding, and a high-voltage battery fire recall that tells owners not to charge.
Brakes152 crashes
The brakes apply themselves without cause, either through automatic emergency braking or the electronic parking brake engaging while driving. The opposite failure also appears: the pedal goes to the floor or turns rock hard, and ABS, stability control and park brake warnings light at once. Some cars repeat the failure after ABS module, booster or wiring repairs, and dealers often cannot duplicate it. These complaints include 2 crashes, one on snow at about 1800 miles. There is also 1 fire from an overheated brake caliper.
Engine13No crashes
Stalling and loss of power while driving lead these complaints, including on the freeway, with hybrid system warnings and a red wrench icon. Stalls are reported as early as 197 miles. Engine mounts wear out early and cause strong vibration, and some cars need more than one replacement within 7,000 miles. Other reports cover rough running and weak acceleration, and an AC compressor failure at 37k miles that damaged the drive belt. One fire happened while the vehicle was parked. Owners also say recall work is delayed by part and loaner car shortages.
Automatic emergency braking92 crashes
The system fails in both directions. Some owners say it never warns or brakes for stopped cars, poles or pedestrians, while dealers find no error codes. Others report full automatic braking with nothing ahead, especially during left turns and on highways next to trucks in other lanes. A few cars report a false collision at startup and will not release the parking brake. These complaints include 2 crashes and 2 injuries, and one involves a pedestrian struck in a crosswalk.
Acceleration and cruise control72 crashes
Unintended acceleration is the main complaint. The engine revs and the vehicle surges in stop-and-go traffic, on the highway, or past the cruise control set speed. The opposite failure also appears: the throttle stops responding while merging, sometimes with a Service 4WD warning. Drivers say they could only stop the car by shifting out of drive or turning it off. Some found glowing brake rotors after the car braked on its own. There are 2 crashes, and another driver lost control and left the road at about 11,000 miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Grand Cherokee owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Starting at around 12k miles, my odometer started flashing and backup cameras completely stopped working, unable to see while backing up, at the same time the active lane management and auto emergency braking went out as well, took my car into the dealership and was told pam module was not good and covered under manufacturer warranty, even after pam module was replaced, the active lane management and auto emergency braking is still not working
Filed with NHTSA, April 2025
Had 60 miles to empty of gas and slowed down while entering a turn lane. All the electronics flashed a few times, forced the car into park (while moving) and then would not turn on to drive. Music continued to play, car would not turn off or restart, AC stopped working, and was unable to shift into neutral to get out of the road. Was almost hit by multiple cars getting into the turning lane expecting me to drive like everyone in front of me.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2025
The Quadra-Lift Air Suspension has failed twice while being driven and once during repairs. I have less than 1000 miles on the vehicle and it has spent more time in the shop than on the road. The system has been inspected and worked on by Covert Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Caliber Collision in Austin, TX. USAA Insurance inspected photos only. There was no prior warning light, only a warning notice light after the system failed.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2023
There is extreme vibration in this vehicle and it gets worse daily. I believe there is something terribly wrong with this Jeep and it's not due to poor alignment. I also experience very hard / stiff bounce back when on bumpy roads. Something that should not be so bad with this type of Jeep. I recently met a woman with a 2022 Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve who said she is experiencing the same exact things. I don't think this is a coincidence.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2023
My wife was driving my kids to school and the jeep went into limp mode. This jeep relies too much on the battery to run everything and the batteries failed, at 39k and 2 years of ownership. It was showing steering, sos, brake, airbag, anti collision system failures with no prior warnings.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
The jeep will display “power steering unavailable” while driving, causing the steering wheel to lock up and be unable to turn while driving. Then the automatic braking, collision warning, and lane departure will all announce it is unavailable. This has caused us almost to crash multiple times. We took the vehicle to Jeep, they witnessed the power steering fail while driving, and told they can not find any remedy. This has been a daily occurrence since.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2025
On 7/9/24 I was driving on the highway and jeep began to lose power and speed. I was unable to accelerate to maintain speed or safely pull to the shoulder. Jeep completely lost power and stopped in the middle of the highway and I had to wait with hazards until I could successfully turn on the car and drive again. This exact thing happened again today on 7/16/24 it was very dangerous and scary especially since I was almost rear ended.
Filed with NHTSA, July 2024
While driving, the vehicle sends a message that the automatic cruise control has shut down, the car starts slowing down and doesn't respond to pressing on the gas. Only recourse is to move off to the side of the road, shut everything down and turn it back on. The batteries show two miles left on the electric system. This is the second occurrence. Both have occurred at highway speed.
