Which CX-9 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Mazda CX-9. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cyl4WD, FWD23–24 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CX-9 that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Center display spider cracks

    28,000–40,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Mazda CX-9, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine15No crashes

Cracked cylinder heads that leak coolant dominate these reports. Symptoms include coolant on the ground, a low reservoir, weak cabin heat, rough idle and a high engine temperature warning that limits power. Several owners say coolant drips onto the exhaust, which raises fire concerns, and some report no warning before the car lost power in traffic. Most reported failures fall between 63,000 and 124,000 miles, though some engines fail earlier. Many owners cite a Mazda service bulletin on cylinder head coolant leaks. Dealers often quote a full engine replacement, and some owners report claims denied after the warranty ran out.

  • Electrical7No crashes

Cracking center screens show up again here, spreading from the corners until the display is hard to read. Mazda reportedly declined coverage on 2019 models. Separate reports describe wipers that switch on by themselves with the switch off and sometimes refuse to stop, with no cause found by the dealer. One owner reports warning lights, poor acceleration and then a fire at the rear passenger side after parking at 61,000 miles. Other complaints cover a dead battery blamed on the power liftgate module and driver-assist features that failed and steered toward oncoming traffic.

  • Transmission4No crashes

Most of these reports describe the same cylinder head coolant leak covered under the engine heading. Coolant leaks from the rear of the engine or into the combustion chamber, which causes overheating, smoke from the tailpipe, and a car that loses power and slows down by itself. Dealer pressure and compression tests confirmed the leak in some cases. One failure came at only 30,000 miles, just past the warranty period. A single separate report describes the vehicle jumping and sometimes stalling while driving.

  • Backup camera31 crash

Backup camera problems here come from two sources. In one crash report, the camera image froze on the screen while it still looked live, and the driver backed into a parked car. Shifting to park and back into reverse fixed the image. The other reports tie a distorted or hard-to-see camera view to spider cracks in the center display, at around 28,000 to 40,000 miles. One owner says Mazda refused to help because the car had not been serviced at a Mazda dealer.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Soul Red Metallic paint chips heavily under normal driving, with one owner noting damage before 30,000 miles. A separate report describes the passenger-side rear wheel well trim molding coming off at interstate speed at about 21,820 miles. The dealer agreed to replace the trim, but the parts were not available, so the car went unrepaired. No crash or injury reports appear in this category.

  • Suspension3No crashes

Creaking and knocking from the front suspension, especially on the driver's side, is the main complaint. Owners trace the noise to the lower control arm bushings and ball joints and say the steering feels looser. They cite a Mazda bulletin on front suspension noise, though the dealer found no problem in one case. Front struts reportedly wore out at about 40,000 miles. One report involves the collapse of an aftermarket lower control arm, not a factory part, and another actually describes engine overheating.

  • Steering2No crashes

A clicking noise when turning the wheel comes from a loose bolt in the steering column. Owners cite a Mazda service bulletin and say the fix is covered under warranty, but cars past warranty are charged for a complete steering column. In a separate report, a tie rod failed while the car was reversing to parallel park at about 10,600 miles, bending the front driver's side wheel inward. That car had to be towed.

  • Brakes2No crashes

Sudden hard braking with no obstacle ahead is the most serious report here. It happened at 35 mph with the driver's foot on the gas. Afterward the screen showed smart brake, front camera and brake override malfunction warnings, and the check engine, traction control and parking brake lights came on. The second complaint is a general list of problems, including rusted brake discs and the engine shutting off twice while driving.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CX-9 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
The car has only 41k miles on it and the engine warning light came on. I had the car towed to Mazda and now it won’t start and it needs a new engine. (Which is on back order for months). It is covered under the powertrain warranty but does me no good if I’m without a vehicle, and making car payments on a vehicle that isn’t running.

Engine
In June of 2022, Mazda issued a TSB for an engine flaw that cause coolant to leak in to the engine and significant overheating occurred. This overheating causes the head to warp. The TSB states that the only repair for this is a newer model engine. This happened to my Mazda CX9 and quite a few more. There are class action suits currently ongoing. Mazda never made its owners aware of the TSB. The car can shut down on the highway which is dangerous to all.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Mazda dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V875000Fuel systemNov 2021

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2018 Mazda3, Mazda6, 2019 CX-3, 2018-2019 MX-5, CX-5, CX-9, and 2019-2020 Mazda2 vehicles. The impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump may crack and deform, potentially causing the fuel pump to fail.

Risk: Fuel pump failure may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the fuel pumps, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 5321K.

  2. 19V770000Wheels and tiresOct 2019

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2019 CX-9 vehicles equipped with Sumitomo Falken ZIEX CT50 A/S tires, size P255/50R20 104V, having date code 1619. An incorrect rubber compound may have been used in the tire's manufacturing, allowing the tread to separate and detach.

Risk: A detached tire tread can decrease vehicle stability and increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect all four tire serial numbers, replacing the tires as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 4, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 4019J.
