Which CX-9 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Mazda CX-9. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cyl4WD, FWD23–24 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CX-9 that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Mazda CX-9, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine62No crashes

Cracked cylinder heads that leak coolant are the dominant problem. Some leaks reach the engine oil. Warning signs include coolant puddles under the parked car, an empty reservoir, rough idle, stalling, bucking when coming to a stop, white smoke, and overheating on the highway. Many owners get no warning light before the engine is damaged, and several cars fail while driving and need a tow. Reported failures range from about 50,000 to 135,000 miles. Dealers usually recommend a full engine replacement, with quotes near $11,000. Owners say Mazda often refuses help once the car is past its warranty.

Coolant leaks into the cylinders through a fractured cylinder head, and dealers recommend replacing the engine. Symptoms include an overheating message and a stop-driving warning within minutes of setting off, an unusual smell inside the cabin, and a coolant trail under the parked car. One failure is logged at about 88,080 miles. Neither reported vehicle had been repaired at the time of filing.

  • Electrical13No crashes

Spider cracking of the infotainment screen makes up the largest share. Cracks spread from the corners and hide the camera and navigation images, sometimes on cars with low miles. One fire report says a passenger seat heater shorted, smoldered, and burned the seat. Another owner was told the engine wiring harness was defective and a fire risk. Other reports include Smart Brake System warnings followed by the car braking on its own at highway speed, a liftgate that opens by itself and drains the battery, sudden dead batteries, and false key and ignition warnings.

  • Transmission12No crashes

Coolant leaks at the cylinder head near the exhaust manifold dominate this category. Several owners say they saw no warning lamp or temperature change. The leak shows up as fluid dripping onto the floor, a sloshing sound, or a radiator fan that keeps running after shutdown. In some cases the damage spreads to the exhaust manifold, the turbocharger, or the catalytic converter. Reported mileages range from about 53,300 to 102,000. A head gasket and resurfacing job did not hold in one case. Separately, one owner reports the forward camera failing along with smart brake warnings and rough running.

  • Brakes51 crash

The most serious report involves the electronic parking brake. It either refuses to release, stranding the driver on an incline, or lets go suddenly while the car is in gear, and it is tied to a crash. Another owner says the pedal went hard with no give and the car rolled over a curb into a railing. One family says the SCBS light came on and the car slowed to a crawl on the road without brake lights, nearly causing a rear-end collision. Squealing and vibration before 25,000 miles that came back after the rotors were resurfaced also appear.

  • Steering3No crashes

Knocking noises start suddenly when the wheel is turned, with no damage to explain them. A mechanic cited a service bulletin, but no recall applied. The other two reports in this category describe different problems. One covers harsh, slipping gear changes, lunging forward at stops, and a water pump replaced for a failing bearing. The other covers a cluster of keyless entry, charging, overheating, and battery warnings on a car with very low miles, at one point while it was moving with a family aboard.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Both reports involve crashes in which the front airbags did not deploy, and an occupant was injured in each one. One was a head-on collision with several cars where every other vehicle's airbags went off. The other driver also describes repeated front windshield error messages that make the car stop automatically on freeways and streets. That driver says three dealer visits produced a different explanation each time.

  • Seats2No crashes

A passenger heated seat overheats while driving, fills the cabin with a burning smell and heavy smoke, and burns a hole through the upholstery. Turning the heater off stopped the smoke. Separately, the rear left seat rails stop latching without warning, so the seat could slide forward in a crash. That is the most common spot for a child seat. A mechanic reports Mazda sells only a complete replacement seat, at about $5,000.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

Only two problems appear here. The passenger sun visor will not lock in the up position and droops into the line of sight. The sunroof glass shatters while the car is moving. Neither report includes a mileage or the cause of the failure.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CX-9 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
The vehicle started leaking coolant, I had it towed to dealer to prevent further damage. They said it has a cracked head, which is a known issue with the 2016-2019 Mazda's, and is acknowledged by Mazda to be their fault. They have posted on a service bulletin that it was caused by added stress during manufacturing. Like many others, they want me to pay over 8k dollars for the repair. This is ridiculous as Mazda has stated that it is their fault.

Engine
I have a 2018 Mazda CX-9 with about 66,000 miles. I noticed a coolant leak when my SUV sat in my driveway. It was there each night after driving the SUV. I took the vehicle to a Mazda dealer who stated that the coolant leak is from a cracked cylinder head. A cylinder head should not crack in 4 years and only 66,000 miles. This is a known Mazda issue for this year make and model.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2022

Electrical
The liftgate (trunk) opens sporadically. The system keeps trying to open the truck and it's causing a parasitic drain on my battery. I was stranded 2 hours from my home due to this. My trunk would sporadically beep three times, that is the only warning I received. There are safety recalls for other year of Mazda cx-9 but not my specific even though I am having the same issue.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2026

Electrical
Passenger seat heater either had a grounding issue or shorted out, causing to seat to start smoldering and catching fire, destroying the seat. There has been recalls and lawsuits for this specific issue on this model in other years, but not for this model year.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Transmission
Coolant leak into cylinder head, resulting in overheating and blown head gasket. Repair cost was $7k to resurface cylinder head and replace gasket. Repair did not fix issue, likely due to unseen cracks or warping to cylinder head. Will require rework, likely entire engine replacement, as the defect cannot be corrected.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Transmission
Went in to the mechanic to get a regular oil change and noticed a liquid slushing sound after starting the car up. Was informed that there is a major coolant leak somewhere in the car. Took it to Mazda dealership right away who confirmed that it is a cracked cylinder head. I got lucky that the car did not overheat on the road and happened to catch it in the nick of time. No check engine lights or low coolant lights came on at all.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Mazda dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V875000Fuel systemNov 2021

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2018 Mazda3, Mazda6, 2019 CX-3, 2018-2019 MX-5, CX-5, CX-9, and 2019-2020 Mazda2 vehicles. The impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump may crack and deform, potentially causing the fuel pump to fail.

Risk: Fuel pump failure may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the fuel pumps, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 5321K.

  2. 19V403000ElectricalMay 2019
