Which CX-5 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Mazda CX-5. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cyl4WD, FWD26–28 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A CX-5 that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Excessive engine oil consumption

    5,500–24,000 miles

  • Early brake rotor and pad wear

    15,000–16,000 miles

  • Rear differential failure

    24,000–26,000 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Mazda CX-5, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine55No crashes

Oil runs low well before the scheduled change, and the low oil warning comes on, often about 3,000 miles after service. Reports cite up to a quart every 1,000 miles, mostly on cars under 30,000 miles. Several tie it to the turbo engine and service bulletin 01-012/21. Dealers often just top off the oil. A separate group of reports describes a check engine light with code P0126, covered by a bulletin on the coolant control valve. On some cars it comes back after the repair.

  • Transmission15No crashes

Oil consumption dominates these reports too. On turbo models the low oil light appears 3,000 to 4,000 miles after a change, with no visible leak. Other cars do leak oil, including a timing cover gasket that kept leaking after repeated warranty repairs and multiple seals at 70,000 miles. A failed rear differential, first noticed as a new noise at 24,000 miles, also appears. Some owners describe rough, jumpy driving below 30 mph, or shaking and stuttering when cylinder deactivation kicks in that can feel close to a stall.

  • Electrical92 crashes

The infotainment screen goes black and takes the backup camera with it, or the audio cuts out. The usual fix is waiting or disconnecting the battery. Several reports involve the telematics unit recall. They describe battery drain, and in one case a keyless ignition fault after the repair that left the car unable to shut off. An engine stall on the interstate cut power steering and brakes and was traced to the high pressure fuel pump. The 2 crash reports cite repeated self-acceleration and a blind spot monitor that missed a car.

  • Wipers and visibility7No crashes

Glass breaks without any impact. Reports include a rear window that shattered twice in a week and a sunroof that burst outward at about 65 mph. The other recurring complaint is weak defrosting. The windshield has a single center defrost vent, so only the middle of the glass clears. The area in front of the driver and the sides stay fogged in rain and snow, and it is worse at night.

Rear glass fractures while the car sits parked. One owner reports it happening four times since June 2023, leaving glass across the rear seat. The windshield also fogs in heavy rain when the climate system blows only hot air, and dealers could not reproduce the problem. In freezing weather the power-folding mirrors can freeze in the tucked position. That burns out the mirror motor and leaves no view behind the car. Later model years added a setting to turn folding off, but there is no retrofit for this year.

  • Acceleration and cruise control54 crashes

The main pattern is sudden acceleration while the driver is pressing the brake. It usually happens at very low speed, pulling into a parking space, driveway, or car wash bay. Of the 5 reports, 4 involve crashes, with 4 injuries, and dealer inspections found no stored codes. In another crash, adaptive cruise control sped up toward slowing traffic instead of braking. Snow packed on the front emblem can also block the cruise control radar and shut the system off.

  • Brakes5No crashes

Rotors rust and chip and pads wear out early, often by about 15,000 miles. Owners notice vibration or squealing when braking. Dealers have treated this as normal wear and quoted as much as $800 to replace the parts. Other reports describe pads that click as they shift, a brand-new car with a burning smell and an antilock brake malfunction alert, and a car that pulled left on a snowy road shortly after all its pads were replaced.

  • Airbags3No crashes

Airbags go off when they should not. In one report the passenger side airbags fired at about 25 mph with no impact, yet the event log still recorded a crash. In another, the driver's curtain and seat airbags deployed after a light curb bump on ice at 10 mph or less, with no damage to the car. A third report describes an airbag warning light that has stayed on for months.

  • Wheels and tires3No crashes

Most tire failures involve the sidewalls on the 225/55R19 size. Reports describe a sidewall bubble on a Firestone Destination LE3 tire and cracking where the sidewall meets the tread on all 4 tires, which a dealer flagged as possible tread separation. Another owner had repeated flats on tires only 6 months old. One report pairs the sidewall bubble with a popping sound at 70 mph and a tire pressure warning light.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints CX-5 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
Low engine oil level light & status is coming on for our 2021 Mazda CX-5 turbo. It has 9115 miles and still 1300 miles away from needing oil change. I called our dealership today & was informed we were the 2nd to call today with message. They provided no further info. I have since found there are technical bulletins regarding this issue. Recalls need to be made & Mazda should be covering all repair costs for this.

Engine
My check oil light has come on 3 times in between my first and 2nd oil changes. Added a total of 1 1/2 quarts between the 3 oil changes. Made the dealership aware of this last week at 2nd oil change. They’ve begun to monitor my mileage with my oil consumption and I’ll go in every 500 miles so they can document.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2022

Transmission
Low oil level between oil change cycles with over 1,000 miles remaining before oil change is required. This has happened between both oil changes so far and I have to add oil myself to ensure oil level isn’t low. The oil consumption seems extremely high and is concerning that at only 12,000 miles I’ve had this problem happen twice.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2022

Transmission
It appears that my car has the check oil level light coming on at approximately 3000 to 4000 miles after an oil change. This seems like a safety issue to me because a brand new car should not be burning a quart of oil at this interval.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Electrical
Infotainment system went dark and I cannot get it to come back on. I’ve read that this has been an ongoing issue and is covered in Mazda cx5 models up to 2020 thru a class action lawsuit, but my one is a 2021 (manufactured we’ll before 2021 though) with a virtually identical system.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Electrical
Radio audio randomly stopped working and you have to disconnect the negative or you have to leave the car off essentially all night. It’s definitely unknown issue there’s videos all over YouTube about it and there’s forms on read about it.

Where the 2021 fits in the CX-5's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the fifth model year of the CX-5's second generation (2017–2025).

Mazda updated the CX-5 for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)

  • Restyled bumpers
  • Updated headlights and tail lights
  • Revised suspension
