Which HR-V is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Honda HR-V. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 27–28 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A HR-V that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Sticky, jerky steering
4,000–10,890 miles
Rear window spontaneously shatters
4,400–17,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Honda HR-V, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Wipers and visibility332No crashes
The rear hatch glass shatters with no impact. It happens on the highway, at traffic lights, and in parked cars, usually with a loud pop like a gunshot. Glass often keeps falling in as the car moves. Many reports follow rear defroster use, and a few mention a burning smell first. One injury is reported. Several failures happen early, some under 6,500 miles. Replacement glass is often back-ordered for weeks or months, and owners report disputes over warranty coverage. A separate complaint says the low beams look like high beams to oncoming drivers.
Rear liftgate glass breaks without impact, often while the car is parked and turned off. Closing a door or running the rear wiper sometimes seems to set it off. Many owners had used the rear defroster shortly before, often on cold mornings. Reported mileages run from about 6,610 to 17,000. There are no warning signs beforehand. Dealers frequently send owners to glass shops or their insurer instead of diagnosing the car, and some say the glass is on backorder or not covered by the warranty.
Steering753 crashes
The wheel feels sticky. It resists small corrections, then jerks or ratchets past the resistance, so the car wanders in its lane and the driver keeps correcting. It happens at all speeds but is most noticeable on the highway and in cold weather. Turning off lane keeping assist does not fix it. No warning lights appear, and dealers often cannot reproduce it. Onset is early, often under 10,000 miles. Three crashes and two injuries are reported. In one, the wheel locked in a bend, the car left the road, and it was totaled. That owner tied the failure to a federal recall campaign.
Body and structure32No crashes
These reports also describe the rear glass shattering for no visible reason. It happens on freeways, at red lights, in garages, and as the ignition is turned on. Some failures come within 48 hours of purchase. Several follow defroster use on cold mornings. Owners say no recall existed when it happened. Dealers covered the opening with plastic while waiting for parts, did not provide loaners, or pushed owners toward their own insurance. Police at some scenes found no sign of impact.
Electrical25No crashes
Most of these complaints are about the rear window bursting, and owners blame the rear window heater. Some smelled burning or found the glass hot just before it broke. A safety recall arrived later, but replacement glass is back-ordered and loaners are scarce. Other problems include no-starts that need repeated jump starts, a car that shut off while driving and needed a new alternator and battery at 36,000 miles, a flickering screen, and windows that stop and reverse. In one report, rodents chewed the wiring harness and the repair was not covered.
Engine4No crashes
Failures here are few and scattered. One valve cover leaked at about 15900 miles, and the dealer fixed it by retorquing the cover and applying sealant instead of replacing it. Another car stalled 5 times in less than a year, both while accelerating and while stopping, and the dealer found no fault. Another showed a charging system warning, and the owner found a loose belt and pulley. One owner reports a new noise under acceleration and suspects the catalytic converter. None of these shows up often enough to call it a pattern.
Airbags21 crash
In one crash, the air bags deployed but only partly inflated. The car hit a tree head-on at 35 MPH while swerving to avoid a deer, and no warning lights had appeared beforehand. The driver later went to a hospital with chest and abdominal pain, and the car was a total loss. The other complaint in this category is really about the rear window shattering. With only 2 complaints, no wider pattern shows.
Fuel system21 crash
In one crash, the car lunged forward while pulling into a parking space and went over the parking stop, onto the sidewalk, and into a storefront window. The driver says their foot was over the brake, not the gas, and firmly braking did not stop the car in time. No one was hurt. The other complaint describes a check engine light for the emissions system and a tire pressure warning. Two complaints are too few to show a trend.
Wheels and tires2No crashes
One original Hankook rear tire blew out without warning at about 16,500 miles. The tire pressure monitor stayed silent before and during the failure and lit up only after the spare went on. Another owner says the original tires had no tread left by 31,000 miles, even with every rotation done at the dealer. With only 2 complaints, this is a thin record. It still points to checking tire wear and the pressure monitor.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints HR-V owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The rear window glass suddenly broke with a huge sound. The glass brokes to pieces completely. No warning light was activated. It happened 10 minutes ago. I haven't reported to my insurance or dealer. I used defrost function. Before this accident happened, I smelled a burning flavor a little. Also, the range dropped almost 10 miles over a 2 mile distance. I am not sure if those phenomena relate or not.

As I see in the news now, my rear window blew out on the expressway on 1/17/2024 on the way to work at 5:30 a.m. With the very cold day below zero it sounded like an explosion and then it crumbled. Luckily I was close to work and my team was able to help me shrink wrap the window to be able to get home. On 1/20/24 I took the car to Safelite for replacement which was done under my insurance. I have no idea this was a problem for my model vehicle.

We bought this 2023 HR-V on December 31, 2023 and it currently has 14,343 on the odometer. About 5,000 miles ago (roughly) we started noticing that the steering feels "sticky" even with the lane assist feature disabled. It is especially noticeable around corners, but it happens at slower speeds as well as faster speeds. It doesn't prevent us from turning the steering wheel and keeping the car centered in the lane, but it does take more effort than normal.

Sticky Steering. Steering wheel provides resistance when turned and causes sudden jerky changes in direction of travel. Even though direction change is minimal it causes constant steering wheel adjustment. The symptom occurs at all speeds from a slow roll to highway speeds. Vehicle has 10,890 miles on it.

The rear window of our 2023 Honda HRV exploded with no incident whatsoever. We had parked the car on Sunday, July 2, 2023 and taken walk on beach at 7:30 in the morning. When we left at 8:15 we heard a noise from the back as we drove off and looked in rear view mirror to see that the back glass was shattering. Continued to shatter as we made our way back home - 1-1/2 miles. This is a Sunday and will consult with dealership on Monday.

I was driving to work in my 2023 HR-V on a main highway this morning, (5-15-2024) and I heard a pop sound. I looked in my rear view mirror and my back windshield was shattered. I have called my local dealer, White Plains Honda and left a message. And as of yet have not heard back. There was no warning lights or signs anything was wrong. I did see on the evening news that this is an on going issue with HR-V's. But no recall has been put out.

I was driving on the freeway and my rear window shattered. There was no potholes or cars next to me. I had turned off the rear defroster 2 miles before it shattered. Sometimes the driver side and passenger windows wont go all the way up. They stop and go back down.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2023
Outside temperature in the 70s had recently just rained and rear window was foggy. I turned on the rear defogger after about two minutes or so started smelling something burning thought it was car exhaust. I parked the car and the rear window shattered. There was a hole the size of a baseball, and when I went out to look, everything fell into the trunk area, Honda claims this is not a warranty issue and it’s not covered

Where the 2023 fits in the HR-V's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2023 is the first model year of the HR-V's third generation (2023–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Honda fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
