Which HR-V is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Honda HR-V. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.8L 4-cylAWD, FWD29–30 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A HR-V that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • CVT transmission failure

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Honda HR-V, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical202 crashes

Sudden power loss is the core pattern. The car stops responding to the gas or refuses to go past 40 to 45 mph, often without warning. Others report a dashboard full of warnings at once (power steering, stability assist, parking brake, emissions), no-starts despite a fully charged battery, and battery drain. Several reports involve the SRS light or an airbag deploying with no impact, which owners tie to Safety Recall 24-036 for the seat weight sensor. Dealers often cannot reproduce the faults. Two reports involve crashes, one a fire, and two injuries.

  • Transmission10No crashes

The transmission fails outright. The CVT stops sending power to the wheels while the engine revs freely, leaving the car stranded in traffic or on the highway. Most failures fall between 56,000 and 85,500 miles, with one dealer finding metal debris in the fluid and one replacement costing over $9000. A second pattern is repeated loss of acceleration at highway speeds of 70 mph and up, with no warning lights. Dealers frequently cannot replicate it. One report describes a seized rear differential from a leaking seal, with both rear CV axles broken.

  • Brakes62 crashes

Pressing the pedal fails to stop the car, with no warning light beforehand. Two reports involve crashes, one with injuries. Other complaints describe stalling at highway speed with an "Electric Emergency Brake Unavailable" message and loss of power steering and braking. Another pattern is a sudden flood of brake, collision system, and emissions warnings. In one case a dealer traced this to a clogged sunroof drain letting water into the front cabin and did not cover it under warranty. Front brakes are also said to grab when wet or iced.

  • Steering51 crash

Stiff wheel response that suddenly overcorrects pulls the car to the left. A clunking sound from the front driver's side came before one crash that caused injuries. Other reports file stalling and no-start problems here. Electronic steering and engine lights stay on and the car won't start, or the car stays running at a green light but won't move until it is restarted. In one case the no-start happened three times within 30 days at 18,000 miles. Dealers ran diagnostics and found nothing.

  • Acceleration and cruise control51 crash

The car accelerates without driver input. Reports describe surging forward while the brake is pressed, often at very low speed while parking or stopping for a light. Two of these led to collisions. In another case the car sped from 65 mph to over 100 mph at about 29,000 miles while the brakes failed to stop it. The opposite also appears, with the car slowing sharply on its own at speed. No warning lights come on, and dealers have been unable to duplicate the problem.

  • Airbags43 crashes

Frontal crashes with heavy damage leave the bags undeployed. Three crash reports describe this, each with an injured occupant, and in one a seat belt also failed to hold the driver. Owners note there is no recall covering non-deployment. A separate complaint involves an airbag warning light on a car the dealer said was not included in the existing 2022 recall. That owner was quoted over $2000 for the repair at 60,000 miles, outside warranty.

  • Automatic emergency braking21 crash

The collision mitigation system brakes hard when no collision is coming, both in heavy city traffic and at highway speeds. One owner reports four such events. Another report describes the opposite: in a crash the system failed completely, the vehicle was totaled, and the driver was injured. With only two complaints filed, the pattern is thin. Both failure types carry loss-of-control risk.

  • Engine2No crashes

Acceleration cuts out in traffic, sometimes in the middle of a left turn across oncoming lanes. Restarting usually clears it, but the problem returns. Other reports describe the car failing to shift into gear and stalling, with brake, check engine, and other warning lights on. Repeat dealer visits either find nothing or end in a software reset after earlier repairs failed. One case reached a fourth diagnosis at about 17,000 miles.

In owners' own words

ElectricalCrash reported
The NHTSA should recall these brakes or open an investigation alongside the electrical system. After reading the complaints on this website, I have found these problems in my 2022 Honda HR-V EX-L.

Transmission
At 85,500 miles, the car stopped in the middle of am intersection and would not movemunder its own power- after being towed to a Honda Dealership, car was diagnosed with catastrophic transmission failure - only solution was to fully replace the transmission at a cost of over $9000

Filed with NHTSA, July 2025

Transmission
This is a continuation of NHTSA ID Number: 11463644. Secondary issue is minimal acceleration output when entering the freeways. At times, it can take between 20-30 seconds to get 0-60 mph - creating a very dangerous environment with the vehicles behind me braking hard to avoid crashing into my 2022 Honda HR-V Sport. American Honda denied my claim to replace ECU and repair body damage to the vehicle after examination.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2022

BrakesCrash reported
The braking system did not work when pushed. It is not available for inspection as it is in a totaled state. My safety was at risk as it sped into a building. It has not been attempted to be reproduced. Vehicle was inspected by police. To be inspected by insurance. There were no warning lamps of any sort.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Brakes
Our 2022 HR-V continues to have a problem with the windows fogging up after driving a few miles. This happens when it is very cold outside. (Below freezing) I have also had two incidents when the inside of the front windshield has had a thin layer of ice and I have had to scrap the inside before being able to drive. The front brakes seem to grab when first applied when wet or iced.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2022

SteeringCrash reported
Sticky Steering: Experienced a clunking sound from front drivers side steering the last two weeks. Last night while driving approximately 15mph the steering got stiff then overcorrected, veering off to the left into oncoming traffic. The car came to a rest after hitting a curb and the airbags deployed. Both injuries and damaged sustained. This is the second occurrence of the vehicle suddenly veering off to the left lane.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2024

Steering
Two times I have been driving in busy areas and when I brought my car to a stop at red lights and it’s turned green, my car will no longer move, but stays running so then I have to turn it off and turn it back on for it to gain motor function again. I have almost been rear-ended twice.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Honda dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 24V384000Backup cameraMay 2024

Honda (America Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Fit and 2019-2022 HR-V vehicles that were previously recalled under NHTSA recall number 23V-046. The rearview camera image may not display when the engine is started with a key, due to a design error in the audio display power circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: An inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the display audio unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 8, 2024. Owners may contact Honda service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are TIQ and DIR. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 23V-046 will need to have the new remedy completed.
