Which Telluride is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Kia Telluride. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.8L 6-cylAWD, FWD20–22 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Telluride that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Kia Telluride, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical36No crashes

The instrument cluster goes black without warning. Drivers lose the speedometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature, and safety alerts, and some also lose cruise control. Navigation often acts up at the same moment, showing the car going the wrong way. Several owners say it happened more than once, and one report puts the first failure near 2,100 miles. The fuel gauge sometimes reads empty on a full or half tank. One fire report describes smoke pouring from the front passenger seat while driving, causing an injury, after a recall repair had been done.

  • Wipers and visibility22No crashes

Windshield cracking is the dominant complaint. Cracks appear while the car sits parked in a garage, start at the edge under the trim, or follow a pop while driving. They then spread quickly, sometimes across half the glass within hours. Small rocks also cause cracks far larger than owners expect, and replacement glass has failed the same way. Many reports come from cars with only a few hundred to a few thousand miles. Other issues include a cracked washer hose near the firewall that drains fluid behind the front wheel liner, and sunroof glass that shatters while driving.

  • Body and structure21No crashes

Exterior trim along the door and window edges comes loose and can fly off at highway speed, leaving rubber or jagged metal exposed. One report says a child was scratched by a protruding trim piece. Most complaints concern recall 25V494000: owners get the notice but dealers have no parts, so cars wait unrepaired while dealers tape the trim back on. Sunroof glass also shatters on its own while closed. One owner was told warranty would not cover it and got an $8260 repair estimate. A detached exterior key lock is also reported.

  • Transmission111 crash

In Snow Mode, the car stops responding to the gas pedal, often when pulling away or turning, at mileages between 1,748 and 3,898. Restarting or switching modes brings power back, and dealers rarely reproduce it. Transmissions stick in 5th gear, slip, and shift with a jolt. One car went through two transmission replacements. An engine seized at 684 miles, and another needed a new engine under the 24V077 valve spring recall. Two reports describe the car rolling while in Park, and one ended in a crash.

  • Automatic emergency braking91 crash

Automatic emergency braking slams on the brakes with nothing ahead, on highways, in city traffic, and at low cruise speeds. Drivers describe near rear-end collisions. Dealers often cannot replicate it, and one dealer simply disabled the navigation-based braking. Adaptive cruise sometimes misses stopped or slower cars until it is very close. Navigation glitches set off repeated wrong-way alerts. Sensor-based systems shut off in rain, snow, or wet roads. One crash report says neither the warning nor the braking activated in a low-speed collision.

  • Engine9No crashes

Seizures happen at very low mileage, as early as 300 miles. The car loses power on the highway, and steering and electrical systems shut down with it. Other cars lose power and stay below 30 MPH with a check engine light, or shake and make abnormal noise. One car caught fire while parked, starting at the driver's seat, and was a total loss; the owner tied it to a recall. Snow Mode cuts throttle on inclines. Isolated reports cite a cracked oil pan at 5,066 miles and an evaporative emissions leak near 10,000.

  • Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes

In Snow Mode, the car fails to accelerate from a stop or at low speed. The pedal goes to the floor with no response and no warning light, sometimes leaving the car stuck in an intersection. Restarting or switching to Sport Mode restores power. With cruise control set at 35 to 45 mph, the car brakes on false collision warnings, and one driver reports a hard stop at 65 mph that swung the rear out. Speed-limit detection can misread a junction as 90mph and push cruise toward 95mph.

  • Seat belts5No crashes

A driver's belt unlatches on its own during slow right turns, with no warning chime. Reports here are few and varied. A second-row anchor bolt works loose and falls out. The third-row right buckle gets crushed when the seat folds down with the buckle slipped behind the backrest, and the dealer blamed misuse. Second-row buckles sit so low that children struggle to buckle or unbuckle themselves. One filing also reports a front bumper sensor bracket that detached without any impact.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Telluride owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The display in front of the steering wheel when out yesterday. It is completely black. We have only had the vehicle for three months. There is no way to know what speed you are driving, how much fuel you have, see any warnings or anything! The KIA dealer said they can check out the problem next Wednesday, April 3, which is one week from when the problem occurred. This is a major hazard to not know your speed or be able to receive any warnings.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Electrical
My entire instrument cluster/dashboard display is blank. I cannot see my speed, how fast I am going, collision warnings, if my lights are on, etc. I have called the dealership, and they indicated there is no active recall. They said they cannot diagnose and fix the issue for a month. This is a major safety issue, since I have no indication of my speed or gas or anything else. It is all controlled by the dash that is blank.

Wipers and visibility
Purchased new vehicle (Kia Telluride) 4/27/24 and on 5/1/24 the windshield has a crack on the passenger side. Not even a week in or 100 miles and already a problem, how is this not covered under any warranty. 3rd time driving the car. Awful quality

Filed with NHTSA, May 2024

Wipers and visibility
I parked in a covered parking garage for about two hours. When I came out there was a crack about a foot long on my passenger side windshield. The crack quickly spread over the next couple of hours while driving almost double the size. There was not a rock that hit my car and it looks like tiny hold in my windshield very strange looking and then spread quickly. I believe my windshield is defective.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Body and structure
While driving on a surface street the sunroof glass shattered all on its own. The glass was in the closed position. No rock or debris was located in the sunshade portion. No one else was around us on the road when it happened. There are numerous complaints about this happening within other forums. The dealer claimed the warranty will not cover broken glass and I was told to file an insurance claim. The estimate to repair the sunroof assembly is $8260.

Body and structure
The trim on my passenger door is coming off! The adhesive is obviously defective. The piece flops when driving and is a risk to others as it may pop off. I’ve read that thousands of 2024 Telluride models have this problem! It is dangerous problem that kia needs to fix!

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Transmission
My dashboard keeps producing these errors 1. Check lane change assist 2. Check blind sport safety system 3. Check forward safety system 4. Check parking collision avoidance assist system 5. Check lane safety system Also, My engine light is on and it’s not shifting right and I can’t drive it now. There's also a burning rubber smell. The driving speed isn't working correctly and will say I'm going 0mph when I'm going 25. When driving, it sometimes jolts.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Transmission
Transmission constantly slipping after driving and transmission gets warmed up. Vehicle continues to rev up and enter high RPMS before changing gears and then jolts the vehicle as changing gears. Also steadily leaking coolant fluids, have taken vehicle to the dealership as of now THREE times to have the coolant issue serviced. Repairs are still not complete to date.
