Which Tiguan is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 25–26 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tiguan that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine44No crashes
Oil disappears between changes, often 1 to 2 quarts at a time with no visible leak. Low-oil warnings, ticking, and blue or white smoke at startup are common, and some cars start burning oil early in ownership. Dealers often run a consumption test and call the rate normal. When repairs happen, they range from valve seals to a full cylinder head, and heads sit on national backorder for months. Some cars also lose coolant. A failed PCV valve is a second pattern, causing oil leaks and gasket damage, with one bill of $7,200.
Transmission38No crashes
Acceleration from a stop hesitates for several seconds, then the car lurches forward. It is worse on a cold engine, and dealers often cannot reproduce it or call it normal. A failed PCV or crankcase vent valve is the other major theme. It forces oil past seals, cracks the oil pan, and leaks at the upper timing cover. Several reports describe sudden exhaust smoke, oil sprayed under the car, an empty dipstick, and limp mode at highway speed. Erratic shifting and a rear differential failure near 49,000 miles also appear.
Electrical37No crashes
The engine shuts off while driving, at lights, in traffic, or climbing hills, and some cars only move again after a full restart. In some cars this gets more frequent over time. The infotainment screen goes black or takes minutes to boot, which also knocks out the backup camera, and replacements often fail to fix it. False Travel Assist alerts sound over and over. Two reports describe doors locking with the key inside and a child in the car, one listed with an injury. Random electronic parking brake engagement also appears.
Steering12No crashes
A faulty steering wheel triggers repeated "Travel Assist currently not available" warnings, sometimes 10 or more chimes in one drive, and disables lane assist and adaptive cruise. Dealers usually confirm the cause and order a new steering wheel. Replacements are often on long backorder with no arrival date, and one owner was told the part is no longer made. Some reports describe lane assist switching on and off and the steering jolting or pulling. A crack spreading near the steering wheel logo, requiring a new airbag cover, also appears.
Wipers and visibility9No crashes
Windshields crack on their own while the car sits parked, with no chip or impact point. Some cracks run across most of the glass. Replacement windshields are frequently on national backorder, leaving drivers with impaired vision for weeks. Sunroof glass also shatters into the cabin without impact, causing minor cuts in one case. Automatic wipers switch on with no rain and cannot be turned off, and one case persisted after a steering wheel replacement. Random Travel Assist and collision warnings come up alongside the wiper fault.
Acceleration and cruise control81 crash
Throttle response lags from a stop. The car creeps forward, loses power for 3 to 4 seconds, then surges, which is especially dangerous during left turns across traffic. The lag is worse when cold and often appears in the first miles of ownership. Dealers frequently find nothing wrong or point to software. One report cites failed spark plugs and ignition coils at 49,000 miles, causing stuttering. In one crash report, the car veered left into the median while on cruise control and was totaled.
Automatic emergency braking5No crashes
Automatic emergency braking engages with nothing ahead and brings the car to an abrupt stop. One report describes a passenger thrown forward and hurt, and another describes a following car nearly rear-ending the vehicle on a highway. Forward collision warnings also trigger for no reason. The remaining complaints repeat the Travel Assist fault, with warning lights flashing and loud chimes sounding every few seconds at any speed. Dealers have dismissed at least one report of phantom braking.
Lane keeping4No crashes
Travel Assist drops out and comes back repeatedly while driving, with a loud chime each time, sometimes 10 times in a minute. Dealers often find no error code, and one car went in 5 times without a fix. Because the fault is intermittent, shops struggle to reproduce it. One report describes Lane Keep Assist misreading lane markings and steering toward traffic, plus the brakes engaging for a shadow. A steering wheel replacement fixed that case.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tiguan owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I had routine oil change. I picked up my car and immediately the red warning light came on. I called garage. They said it was PVC valve for high pressure. I fixed that. This is next routine oil change. Now the accessory bracket seal and oil cooler seal need to be repaired. My car only has 68,340k on it. I see there are many complaints on line about this issue.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
The rate of oil consumption is very high. VW claims that the rate of consumption is within the 1200mile/liter limit, but 3500 miles after an oil change, the check engine oil light has come on again, with oil limits at the bottom of the dipstick.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2025
My vehicle has been consuming oil at a rate of approximately 1 quart every 1,500 miles. The VW dealership I took my vehicle into reported that VW considers this “normal”. After arguing that any vehicle that will burn its entire oil reservoir between oil changes is not normal, they agreed to perform an oil consumption test which is currently underway.

When letting off the gas and then step on the gas again the transmission “slips” as if it does but know what gear it should be in. I have mentioned this to the dealership since shortly after I bought the car. I have messaged VW directly about this issue. The dealership told me it cannot be fixed unless there is a “code”. A brand new car should not drive like this. How do I get this fixed before it fails and ceases the engine.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2023
Cylinder #2 Misfire, Multiple Misfires. Codes P030200 and P030000 after car sat idle for 20 minutes. Dealer unable to recreate issue. Stating “bad gas” because they are unable to figure it out. Taking it to separate dealership for investigation/second opinion. Car is filled at same Shell gas station and has been for the past year. Bad gas is just not true. Several owners experiencing same issue and injector harness is being replaced. Please investigate.

The car will constantly alarm “travel assist currently not available “. Lane assist is not turned on. It will alarm and shut off and alarm again. There are times when is will alarm 10-15 times in less than a minute. It will also alarm when in park. The alarm is often distracting, irritating and create alarm fatigue. I am unable to have a 5 minute conversation on the phone without having to hang up during your the alarm constantly going off.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
I was informed from the Volkswagen dealership of where I purchased the vehicle that there are malfunctions with the Lane Assist system and other driver assistance functions caused by a fault in the steering wheel. However, I was also told that Volkswagen no longer manufactures or provides a replacement steering wheel for my vehicle. This leaves me without a viable solution to restore the safety systems that are integral to the vehicle’s operation.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
There is a continuous alert stating "Travel Assist not available" even though Travel Assist is actively on, working, and exterior sensors are clear and clean. A Volkswagen dealer confirmed that it is due to faulty sensors in the steering wheel. There seem to be hundreds of people who have reported the same issue over several years, yet there has not been a recall yet for this issue.
