Which Soul is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Kia Soul. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.6L 4-cylFWD29 mpg
2.0L 4-cylFWD31 mpg
  • The 2022 Kia Soul was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Soul that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • IVT transmission failure

    4,300–10,734 miles

  • Timing failure and stalling

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Kia Soul, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine44No crashes

Oil disappears between changes, often with no low-oil warning, and the engine then rattles, runs rough, loses power, or stalls in traffic and on highways. Dealers document stuck oil control rings and repeated failed oil consumption tests, and several cars end up needing a full engine replacement. Timing damage follows oil starvation, including a failed timing chain tensioner and camshaft timing codes. Some owners also report stalling with white smoke while auto start-stop is on. Warranty denials, sludge findings, and long waits without a loaner car come up often.

Engines burn oil, knock or rattle, and stall while driving. Some seize with smoke coming from the engine bay and have to be towed. Owners say the low oil warning light stays off even when the oil is quarts low. Most of these reports, though, are about waiting for a recall repair. Dealers say parts are unavailable and the remedy is on hold. Where work does happen, dealers replace engines, oil pumps, or spark plugs, and some owners are turned away because they have no maintenance receipts.

  • Transmission10No crashes

The IVT transmission fails early. The rpm swings, then all power is lost, leaving cars stuck in intersections and on highways between 4,300 and 10,734 miles. Dealers find metal shavings in the fluid, and some replacement transmissions fail again. These reports include two injuries. Other complaints describe stalling caused by timing faults linked to low oil, with failures returning after major timing repairs. Owners also report jerky, rubber-band deceleration that feels close to stalling, and engines that shut off on the interstate with smoke coming from the rear.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The car loses power and stalls, whether at highway speed or at a complete stop, and dealers often find no cause. ABS, traction control, and forward collision avoidance warning lights come on together and keep returning. Some stalls at a stop are tied to the start/stop feature. Other reports cover a broken CVVT pin that requires a new exhaust camshaft and CVVT assembly, a starter failing soon after an engine replacement, power windows that won't roll back up, and automatic emergency braking that grabs too early in reverse.

  • Acceleration and cruise control4No crashes

Acceleration lags and the rpm climbs while the car barely gains speed. Shifts come late and loud. Other reports describe chugging on the freeway with the car unable to go over 50 mph, a no-start, and rpm surges on deceleration in sport mode. Oil loss between changes and a humming air conditioner appear alongside these symptoms. In one case, a dealer will not perform recall service until an unresponsive ECU is replaced.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in crashes, and both complaints here are crash reports with three people injured in total. In a rear-end collision at a stop, the seat belts also fail to retract, and a front passenger needs stitches for a head injury. In a frontal impact at about 35 mph that totals the car, the driver reports neck and shoulder injuries. The two reports come at very different mileages, so no shared pattern shows.

  • Steering2No crashes

Rodents chew through the main wire harness, twice in the same spot on one car, and the repair runs into the thousands. The owner suspects soy-based wire coating. The other report is not a steering fault. The car shuts down in drive with the battery, oil, and engine lights on, then restarts normally after being turned off and on. This repeats over several years while the dealer finds no cause, later progressing to shutdowns every 10 minutes.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Soul owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
9000 miles muffler failed, 12000 miles spark plugs cracked and was told it was sparking hot and could catch on fire, 13000 miles fuel injectors clogged with carbon, on going fuel smell in oil and shakes in idle with a/c on

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Engine
-Piston oil rings, oil burn -potential fire or wreck risk -oil usage confirmed -no -engine noise Manufacturers are accepting 1 qt burn per 1,000 miles. This is beyond excessive and should be repaired or replaced.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Transmission
Unknown, my car has been burning through oil every 1000 miles and is starting to seize as I’m driving which is super dangerous! I have kept up with my car on oil changes and everything else that is recommended.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Electrical
When applying brakes over bumps the car sounds as if the brakes are locking up. When putting are in reverse and it uses the Automatic Emergency Braking aggressively too early. I have already paid to replace the window motors due to all windows not working when using the button on drivers side buttons, since replacing those motors the vehicle STILL continues to have electrical malfunctions when rolling windows down they won't roll up.

Where the 2022 fits in the Soul's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the third model year of the Soul's third generation (2020 on).

Kia updated the Soul for 2023, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2023 (not on a 2022)

  • Revised headlights and taillights
  • New color combinations
