Which Soul is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Kia Soul. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L 4-cylGas | FWD | 28 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | FWD | 27 mpg |
| Electric | FWD | 111 mi range |
- The 2018 Kia Soul was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 111 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Rod knock and engine failure
65,000–94,000 miles
Oil burning, catalytic converter failure
84,000–98,000 miles
Low compression, engine seizure
120,000–165,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Kia Soul, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine102No crashes
Sudden failure, often at highway speed, is the dominant complaint, with knocking, smoke, power loss, or a full seizure. Mechanics in these reports point to connecting rod bearing failure, metal shavings in the oil, and low compression from worn piston rings. Many failures give no warning light. Heavy oil burning often comes first. Seven reports involve fire, including flames from the engine bay while driving and one car that burned while parked. Failures cluster from about 70,000 to 94,000 miles, with more past 120,000. Some owners say coverage was denied because a software update was never done.
Heavy oil consumption is the main pattern. Owners add oil weekly or find it low soon after an oil change. The problem often comes with a check engine light, black exhaust smoke, and a failed catalytic converter, mostly between about 89,400 and 98,000 miles. Several cases end in knocking, stalling on the road, and an engine that needs replacing or rebuilding, including one with a connecting rod through the block. Stalls often happen with no warning light, sometimes at highway speed.
Transmission291 crash
Most of these reports describe sudden power loss and engine failure, not transmission faults. Owners report rod knock, a flickering oil light, and then a dead engine, mostly between about 65,000 and 80,000 miles. A second group describes hesitation from a stop followed by hard acceleration, sluggish or stumbling response, and odd shifting, some on nearly new cars. Check engine lights keep coming back, and dealers often cannot find a cause. Oil leaking into the catalytic converter also appears. One crash report describes an EV rolling downhill after being put in park.
Electrical161 crash
Starting failures and stalls lead this category. The car clicks but won't start, or needs a jump even after the battery, starter, and alternator test fine. Several stalls turn out to be oil consumption and engine failure rather than wiring faults. Two reports describe engine-bay fires while driving. Other complaints cite brake and tail lights that keep burning out, cracked headlight lenses, false adaptive cruise and emergency brake warnings in the rain, and an EV battery losing charge capacity. A few owners say dealers could not read the diagnostic port or finish airbag work.
Airbags108 crashes
Most of these reports say the air bags did not deploy in serious crashes. Eight describe crashes, including front, side, and rear impacts, and many cars were totaled. Reported injuries include chest bruising, head trauma, and spinal disc damage. In one front-end crash only the side bags deployed. The remaining complaints are about dealer delays on airbag repair work. Owners describe waiting months for parts or appointments, and some say dealers asked them to pay for diagnostics first.
Acceleration and cruise control72 crashes
The car surges or speeds up on its own, often from a stop with the brake pressed. Two reports describe crashes, one into a house that left the driver with a broken nose and one into a parked car. Other owners report very high revs at startup, the front end jumping under throttle, hesitation from a stop, and sudden slowdowns on the freeway. Some of these complaints tie the events to oil warnings, engine knock, and engine failure. Dealers often find nothing wrong.
Steering5No crashes
There are only a few steering complaints, but they are serious. Owners describe losing steering control mid-turn, a wheel that turns hard or goes loose, and violent front-end shaking. Repairs mentioned include a steering shaft at 102,000 miles and new steering gears, coupler, and rack. One report ties the loss of steering to the car dropping into limp mode while the battery boiled over. Another blames skin dermatitis on the steering wheel material.
Body and structure4No crashes
Paint failure is the most common complaint. White paint flakes off the hood and chips along the seam where it meets the contrasting roof, and clear coat peels off the mirrors. In one report, paint flakes blew onto the windshield at freeway speed and blocked the driver's view. A dashboard that turns sticky and glossy causes glare on the windshield. One report describes the car catching fire in a driveway while parked and switched off, with no cause found.
Wheels and tires3No crashes
This small group of complaints is about tire failures at highway speed. One rear tire separated at about 70 mph. Another blew out at about 60 mph with no low-pressure warning and sent the car into a spin, though it hit nothing. Owners also object that the car comes with a tire mobility kit instead of a spare, and the kit only seals small punctures.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Soul owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The camshaft bolt broke off and destroyed the engine. A second bolt worked itself loose and photos show it at least half way out. Less than 100k on vehicle. The car was on the freeway when it lost acceleration ability. The dealership requested the extended warranty cover the replacement of the engine and they denied coverage. A few months before the codes for camshaft sensor came on. We replace the sensor and the car worked fine until recently.

I was driving on Interstate 64.im Norfolk when the car started to smoke, I just made to the side of the road and my car turned off. My dad told me that I he had the same thing happen to him on his 2011 optima his car turned off on the road. Kia had a recall on Kia optima engines. I spoke to another person that has a sol the same thing happened to them and there car only had 70,000 miles. Kia has put bad dangerous engines in there cars.

Bought this vehicle used with 32k miles. Have experienced a judder when accelerating since we purchased it. This a known issue with Kia. I sent it to a dealership and they replaced a fuel injector and said that was the problem, it's not. Got the car back and it is still malfunctioning. This issue was reported on this vehicle previously when it was brand new. I need this issue fixed.

My 2018 kia soul EV has had a significantly decreased range, inconsistent charging, and a check EV light illuminating periodically. All of these are symptoms of the recall. Kia is not only not giving a timeline to diagnose and repair the problem, they are also charging me a "diagnostic" fee for the recall. I cannot just be without a car indefinitely while Kia figures out the issue.

I was involved in a high speed car accident last week where the impact made me hit my head on the steering wheel. My air bags never deployed even though the other driver was going at least 70mph. My vehicle is a total loss.

Kia America, Inc. (KIA) is recalling certain 2015-2019 Soul EV vehicles. The parking mechanism may be damaged, which can result in unintended vehicle movement when the gear shift lever is in the Park 'P' position and the parking brake is not applied while the vehicle is powered on.
Risk: Unintended vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the electronic control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 21, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC287. This recall expands and replaces recall number 20V-389. Vehicles previously repaired under 20V-389 will need to have the new remedy completed.
