  • The 2018 Kia Optima was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Optima that averages well under the EPA 25 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Kia Optima, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine1031 crash

Oil disappears between changes with no visible leak. This is by far the most common report. Owners add oil every week or two and say the low-oil light comes on only when the level is already very low. They also describe fouled spark plugs, misfires, rough idle and heavy shaking. Several cases go on to a failed valve, metal in the engine or complete failure, with onset from about 72,000 miles to just over 100K. Six of the 90 complaints involve fire, including flames under the hood while driving and in a parked car.

Heavy oil burning leads to stalls, limp mode, knocking and seized engines in this group. Owners add oil every week or two, and some find the crankcase empty with the oil light flashing. Dealers have diagnosed a fractured valve, failed spark plugs and seized engines, and several said the engine needed replacing. A few owners say coverage was denied because of the car's maintenance history. Stalls happen at 40 to 65 mph, and failures appear between about 60,000 and 121,000 miles.

  • Electrical27No crashes

Bulbs burn out again and again, and headlights can switch off while driving at night. Other owners say the engine stalls or shuts off, with the power steering, battery and master warning lights coming on together. The doors can lock themselves while the engine runs with the key inside, which strands drivers. Trunk latches fail, and the trunk can fly open with no warning on the dash. Two complaints involve fire: one at bulb connections and one with sparks from under the car. Many filings here actually describe oil burning.

  • Transmission181 crash

The car jerks, shifts hard and jolts when slowing to a stop, and dealers often find no cause. Several owners lose power at speed. They describe stalls while merging onto highways and an engine that revs without moving the car. One transmission failed at 3800 miles. Many filings again describe heavy oil burning with smoke from the tailpipe. One complaint describes a CV axle snapping in a crash, and another describes an engine fire while driving. In a third, a parked car rolled down a driveway and two people were hurt.

  • Steering12No crashes

Power steering cuts out or goes heavy, often along with a stall and a cluster of dash warning lights. Owners say this nearly caused crashes. In one report the steering locked mid-turn with the power steering light on. Reports range from about 35,000 to 63,826 miles. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault, and one owner replaced the alternator without fixing it. Other filings describe a failed steering column coupler, a wheel stuck at startup and theft concerns.

  • Airbags97 crashes

Crashes happen without the bags deploying in most filings here. Seven of the nine complaints involve crashes, and seven people were injured. The crashes include rear-end impacts and hits on trees and poles. Several owners also say the seat belt did not lock. In one report every bag deployed except the steering wheel bag. A separate complaint about a hybrid describes the warning light coming on with oil leaking and metal shavings in the oil.

  • Exterior lights9No crashes

Headlights shut off by themselves while driving at night with the switch on Auto, sometimes along with the dash lights. Owners get them back by toggling the switch, and some leave it on manual. Others say the headlights go off whenever the turn signal is used, or come on by themselves in a locked, parked car. Owners describe this as dangerous on unlit roads and freeway merges. One SX owner reports the auto-leveling LED headlamps aim lower when passengers get in.

  • Brakes81 crash

The brake pedal goes soft and sinks to the floor. In one crash report, this sent the car into a building wall. Other owners describe a firm pedal that barely slows the car and then locks the wheels, a catching feeling near 13 mph, and brakes that are slow to release in reverse. New master cylinders, brake boosters, calipers and pads do not always fix it, and dealers often find nothing wrong. One owner reports front calipers seizing and smoking.

  • Body and structure6No crashes

The panoramic sunroof shatters on its own at highway speed, with a gunshot-like bang and no impact, in two reports. Paint bubbles and peels on the driver-side door and below the rear window, including on snow white pearl cars. Other filings here describe a tire blowout under 16,000 miles followed by brake warning lights and grinding, and an engine with oil burning, oil leaks, loss of power and code P1326.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Optima owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
Oil consumption issue. My mechanic referred me to Kia because oil consumption. I would bring car in because oil light and no oil in car and had oil change only 1000 miles. Kia did 2 checks one at 1000 miles and one at 500 miles and oil consumption failed both times. Now I have to pay $686 for oil combustion cleaning even though I am being told this is more than likely going to have engine replaced by Kia because of known issues,

Engine
Car would convulse and shake very wildly metal parts spread around engine. It has very rough idle. 4th cylinder went out and car only has about 99060 miles. The valve went out. My safety was very bad as car was not driving safely and shaking like a person having a seizeure each time it would stop. Vehicle has been inspected by a Kia dealer. This problem I had seems to get an issue many other people with Kia Optima have.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Electrical
The engine consumes all the oil within 1000 miles. The oil light comes on around 800 miles after oil change. The dealership did the 3 separate tests and they all failed. Dealership stated the engine is faulty however Kia corporate denied the claim. There is already a class action lawsuit in progress in California.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Electrical
I was sold an unsafe vehicle at J and J Auto house 6446 Wilshire Bl LA,CA 90022. Dealer withheld condition of car . Had car three months and was stranded on highway. Car was towed to Kia dealer and diagnosed with complete engine failure. Dealer will not honor limited warranty, shady sales practices withheld recall info during sale, won’t allow his mechanic to look at car, dodged calls, denied request to return car for refund

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Transmission
It burns oil constantly. I constantly have to get new filters put on because they become black very quickly same with the oil itself. The engine has a tic and I know other people with optima’s that have the same problem. I burn through 4 quarts in two weeks- less than 600 miles.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Transmission
Car will NOT go pat 60mph and i haven’t had this car just over 6 months. And the camshaft sensors are gone out. Smoke comes out the pipe when mash on gas…. It is really a bad vehicle. And Southeast auto refuses to fix it. I really honestly think the motor is bad in it. Because I been having issues with it since I had it

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Steering
High injector fuel pump top engine mount went out at 68000 miles. It caused the vehicle to stall and lose power and basically cut the car off while driving.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2023

Steering
Steering column coupler went bad. Unable to swap out the coupler alone ($12 part) and had to get a whole new column (over $1200). Some of the Kia's around this one's make and model were recalled but not this one. Without this repair driving would have been dangerous.

Recalls to confirm (2)

Recall repairs are free at any Kia dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V594000Door latches and locksAug 2023

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Rio, 2016-2018 Optima, 2017-2018 Optima Hybrid and Optima Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. The trunk latch base may crack, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 401, "Internal Trunk Release.".

Risk: A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing their risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the trunk latch base subassembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 19, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC278.

  2. 18V161000Fuel systemMar 2018

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Kia Optima hybrid vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with a Voltage Protection Device (VPD), designed to protect the high voltage battery module, that may activate inadvertently.

Risk: If the VPD activates while the vehicle is being operated in Electric Vehicle (EV) mode, there may be a loss of power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will remove the VPD switch and install two newly designed Battery Management Systems (BMS) that contain Overvoltage Protection Devices (OPDs), free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC162.
