Which Forte is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Kia Forte. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.6L 4-cylFWD27 mpg
2.0L 4-cylFWD32 mpg
  • The 2018 Kia Forte was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Forte that averages well under the EPA 27 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Kia Forte, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine421 crash

Sudden engine failure is the dominant pattern. The car stalls at stops or while braking, loses power while merging at highway speed, or starts knocking and grinding before quitting. Many reports describe oil running out between changes and no warning light until after the damage. Mechanics often say the engine needs replacing. Failures cluster between 67,000 and 90,000 miles, with some past 100,000. Replacing crankshaft or camshaft sensors does not fix it. Second owners and owners missing oil-change receipts report being denied warranty coverage. One report involves a crash.

Half of these reports concern a recall repair part that dealers did not have, leaving owners waiting with no failure yet. The rest describe engine trouble. The car fails to accelerate, oil is found extremely low, and knocking follows until the engine needs replacement despite repeated dealer visits. Another report describes a strong fume odor, sludged oil blamed on missed changes, and warranty coverage denied.

  • Airbags148 crashes

Airbags failing to deploy in crashes is the main complaint, and it is serious. Eight reports involve crashes and eight involve injuries, including frontal impacts at 50 mph where the airbags did not deploy. Owners also describe the airbag warning light flickering or staying on for weeks, sometimes right after dealer work on the airbag system, with repair quotes up to $3500. A few reports filed here describe engine stalling or a trunk opening unexpectedly instead.

  • Electrical141 crash

Theft is a recurring theme. Owners say the car has no immobilizer and can be started with a USB cable, and some report break-ins and stolen cars even after a dealer software update. Other reports describe dashboard warning lights flickering while the speedometer quits, the car slipping into ECO mode and slowing on a freeway merge, no-start clicking, and stalling at 35 mph. The trunk popping open on its own also appears. One report describes an engine-bay fire while driving after the check engine light came on.

  • Transmission81 crash

Shifting problems lead this category. The transmission stays in sixth gear, skips gears, refuses to shift into second, or suddenly feels like it is in neutral while the shift lever sticks in Drive. Owners describe weak acceleration when changing lanes on the interstate, shaking at 30 mph, and a loud roar under throttle. Rough idle on nearly new cars, within the first few hundred miles, appears in early reports. Some complaints describe the engine dying in traffic and restarting with hesitation. One report is crash-related.

  • Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes

Hesitation after pressing the accelerator is the main complaint. The car pauses or will not pick up speed while merging or changing lanes, sometimes with the revs climbing and no movement. Dealers report they cannot reproduce it or find a code. Other reports describe a gas pedal that sticks, one at 1,462 miles, and a car that surged forward at startup and caused a foot injury requiring stitches. One report pairs a tapping engine noise with weak acceleration.

  • Steering51 crash

Few of these reports describe a pure steering defect. Heavy steering after the engine shuts off at speed, making it hard to pull over, is the clearest safety issue. Owners also describe a clicking noise when turning in either direction and rattling over speed bumps. One car with under 2000 miles had a front wheel turn inward after a pop. Other reports cover sliding into another car despite braking, with no airbags deploying, and sudden loss of acceleration.

  • Exterior lights5No crashes

Rear bulbs failing repeatedly is the most common lighting complaint, with blinkers, tail lights, and the license plate light going out, sometimes within hours of replacement. Water collecting inside the rear tail light also appears. One owner measured dim low beams lighting only 85 feet of road. Unrelated reports filed here describe a corroded subframe and engine cradle with a loose lower engine mount causing violent vibration, a fuel door that will not open, and an oil pan leak.

  • Door latches and locks4No crashes

The trunk opens by itself while the car is parked and turned off, sometimes repeatedly. Other owners describe the opposite problem: a trunk that will not open at all or will not latch securely when closed. One report says a previously replaced trunk latch failed again. Reported mileages range from 33,500 to 82,734, with no clear clustering. None of these reports involve a crash or injury.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Forte owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
the engine was burning oil unknown to me. You had an oil change completed at 101k miles and 106k miles and there was no oil left in the engine per mechanic. This caused the check engine light to turn on. Upon running the engine scans the code for a crankshaft error was discovered. P0017 The mechanic has now stated that a new engine is required due to the damage done to the engine because of the oil loss.

Engine
Car with less than 100K in Miles requires a new camshaft and accuator. Kia will not replace as a warranty defect due to it being a second owner car. The car can stall and cut off due to this issue.

AirbagsCrash reported
I got into a car accident and my air bags never deployed and the seat beat didn’t lock so I cause me to get jerked and my head hit the side door and I messed up my left shoulder and arm in the process of holding myself from hitting the steering wheel and my breaks didn’t stop when I got hit and pressed down my car got stuck on drive accelerating on its own after I had my foot on break to stop the car

AirbagsCrash reported
Brakes completely locked up during my attempt to stop the vehicle does have abs and that is supposed to allow the wheels to keep moving so that you can try to maneuver and when I made contact with the other vehicle the airbag never deployed

Filed with NHTSA, February 2024

Electrical
My vehicle was broken into and attempted to be stolen. My Kia was made within the years that is a KNOWN issue that thieves can simply use a USB to start the car. There is no immobilizer switch on the ignition. This issue has caused a rise of 400% in thefts of Kias and Hyundais. I personally had to pay $468 to get it repaired and another $700 to have accurate security put in the car. Kia knows and has known that this is a defect in their manufacturing.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2022

Electrical
ABS light, parking break light, tire pressure light, ESC light, and outdoor temperature and climate control all flicker and the speedometer stops working. Multiple cars with same make and model have same issue and are constantly in and out of the dealer with the issue unresolved.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Transmission
While driving the car with the flow of busy traffic, the engine failed and the car stopped. It eventually turn back on (side of the road) but now drives with hesitation, a strange noise, and with the engine light on. This cycle continued until we arrived at the repair shop. And after much research, it seems that this experience is common for other Kia engines. Why was mine not included? Someone could have been badly injured!
