Which Trailblazer is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.2L 3-cylFWD30 mpg
1.3L 3-cylAWD, FWD28–31 mpg
  • The 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Trailblazer that averages well under the EPA 28 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission29No crashes

A "Shift to Park" message appears when the shifter is already in Park, and the car will not shut down fully. It stays in accessory mode, keeps beeping, and can drain the battery overnight. Owners cycle through the gears, wiggle the lever, or restart many times to clear it. Most reports start between 14,000 and 28,100 miles. Dealers replace the shifter assembly, often at the owner's expense, and several reports cite back-ordered parts. Other reports describe reduced-power mode at highway speed, stalling in traffic with lost power steering and brake assist, and a worn brake pedal that blocks cruise control.

  • Electrical15No crashes

Nearly every report here describes the false "Shift to Park" message. The car keeps running, the radio and lights stay on, and the doors cannot be locked until the warning clears. Onset is reported between 19,700 and 29,700 miles, and dealers cite parts shortages or cannot find the cause. A second pattern is door lock actuator failure: front doors stop locking from the fob or the door button, and the rear actuators follow. Other reports describe delayed push-button starts, an early battery failure, and a key that cannot be removed.

  • Brakes9No crashes

Persistent brake squeal is the most common complaint, often present from new and starting under 10,000 miles. Dealers call it normal or say the brakes are dirty. A worn brake pedal sensor at about 21,000 miles keeps cruise control from engaging until the driver pulls the pedal up. More serious reports describe a soft pedal with pulling and metal-on-metal noise, and shaking at highway speed with brake, ABS, and traction warnings that required a new brake control module. One high-mileage car had a stuck pedal and no replacement parts available.

  • Engine7No crashes

Exhaust bolts at the muffler flange rust and shear, and the rear muffler or tailpipe drops while driving, including on the interstate. Owners describe the pipe dragging under the car with no warning beforehand. Reported mileage ranges up to 65,000. A separate pattern is evaporative emissions purge pump failure, reported at 33,442 miles, with the dealer refusing coverage. One car repeatedly drops to half power with the check engine light on, and neither the dealer nor GM can find the cause after nearly two weeks in the shop.

The check engine light comes on and the dealer finds a failed evaporative emissions canister pump that needs replacement. In that report the car was diagnosed but not repaired, and the manufacturer pointed the owner to the federal complaint hotline. The other report covers exhaust failure: bolts and studs holding the system together rust through and break after about two years, and the entire exhaust comes loose from the car. Both problems match patterns reported in other categories for this model year.

  • Steering5No crashes

"Service Power Steering" and "Service ESC" warnings appear while driving, and steering turns heavy enough to need real force. In some cases the engine drops to reduced power and brake warnings appear at the same time, creating a loss-of-control risk in traffic. The warnings come and go, and some cars are towed to the dealer more than once. Dealer fixes include a steering column and a braking system update. Several of these reports also mention the false "Shift to Park" message, an overheating engine, and jerky gear changes.

  • Automatic emergency braking42 crashes

Adaptive cruise and forward collision braking slam on the brakes at highway speed with nothing ahead. Triggers include overhead bridges, passing cars in the next lane, and lane changes, and one car braked at 70 mph near 35,500 miles. Half of the four reports involve a crash, one with an injury, both after a "Forward Collision System Reduced" warning appeared. Those reports focus on dealer delays: a multi-day diagnosis with no loaner car. One new car also logged a "Service Side Detection System" warning with several low-voltage and communication codes.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

The exhaust system and muffler drop off the car while driving. The bolts joining the exhaust sections break, or a plastic exhaust bracket fails, and the pipes come down and scrape the road. No warning lights or messages appear before the failure. Owners describe a real crash risk if the pipe catches the pavement at speed, and one car lost power when the muffler disconnected. Cars are towed to the dealer for repair, and one dealer called it a common problem on this model.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

Adaptive cruise control brakes hard for no real reason, such as the shadow of a tree or an overpass, and the problem repeats. One report describes unintended acceleration from 40 mph to over 100 mph at 2,876 miles. The brake pedal did not slow the car, and the driver stopped it by shifting into Park. The car was towed to the dealer, and the cause had not been determined. With only two reports, this is not a broad pattern, but both describe sudden loss of speed control.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Trailblazer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
“Shift to Park” message came on the dashboard. Car would not change gear or go into reverse or drive. Basically stuck in Park position. Car kept peeping sound nonstop for over 20 minutes. And it drained the battery. Car would not drive. Had to have it towed to the dealership I brought it from 45 miles away. I had to pay $656.72 at dealership to get it fixed. The dealership removed and replaces the shifter assembly which cost $656.72.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Transmission
Vehicle displayed "Shift to Park" error and would not shut off. This occurs after the shifter is placed in the park position. By any standard, a defective component that prevents the car from being shut off is an extreme safety concern and needs immediate attention. Additionally, the instrument panel remains illuminated and the aux power items continue to function. This has happened multiple times and has drained the battery on several occasions.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Electrical
“Shift to park” alert. It started after the car had 29,000 miles. It would occur occasionally but on Jan 4th of this year, I had to restart and move my car 11 times in order for the alert to be cancelled and I was able to shut off my car. I have been told there is no parts available by the dealer who has my car and they don’t know when the work will be done!

Electrical
My 2022 Trailblazer has had a shift to park issue. It’s hazardous as I have to constantly park my car in reverse to get the “shift to park” message off my dashboard screen. My car doesn’t shut off properly with this issue. My car is only at 19,700 miles. It should not be having this issue.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2024

Brakes
Brakes continuously squeak and has been taken to dealer on several occasions to address but was told nothing wrong. The collision avoidance reacts to vehicles parked on side of road which has also been taken to dealer but told nothing wrong. Apple car play works intermittently.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Brakes
Check engine light keeps coming on. Hard shifting. Takes too long for brake to engage. Fuel injector replaced. This car is only 3 months into service.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2022

Engine
The three bolts at the flange attaching the muffler to the upper muffler sheared off due to rust and the whole rear muffler fell off when driving the car on an interstate. Car is 3 years old and at the time had 65,000 miles. The bolts used are of poor quality, and to make matters worse, there is no exhaust hanger near this flange so the muffler is supported at the front by just this flange. Poorly designed by GM.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Engine
The check engine light and other error codes are on. The vehicle would run fine and then the engine would go into 1/2 power and go slow while driving. This has happened other times too. It has been in the shop and the dealership and GM do not know what is wrong with it. It has been there for almost 2 weeks.
