Which Acadia is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2018 GMC Acadia. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD23 mpg
3.6L 6-cylAWD, FWD20–21 mpg
  • The 2018 GMC Acadia was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Acadia that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Shift to Park warning begins

    12,000–48,000 miles

  • Shift to Park fault returns after repair

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2018 GMC Acadia, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission1483 crashes

The car fails to recognize Park, the most common complaint by far. A "Shift to Park" message and chime stay on, the car won't shut off or lock, and the battery drains. Several reports say the car rolled after the driver left it, including a garage crash. Onset clusters between about 12,000 and 48,000 miles. Shifter repairs often don't hold, and one dealer had no parts. Less often, the transmission slips on the warm 2-3 upshift or the car stalls on the highway. One report describes a fractured front half shaft.

  • Electrical671 crash

"Shift to Park" faults lead this category too. One dealer found a shifter switch that wasn't grounding, and some owners paid for shifter, harness and module replacements at low mileage. Other reports describe the engine shutting off or losing power on highways, random no-starts, dead batteries, and dash lights going dark while driving. Another pattern is a powertrain computer fault that knocks out the temperature gauge, power steering assist and air conditioning together. One car caught fire while idling in a driveway, and one crash is linked to engine shutdowns.

  • Steering202 crashes

A "Steering Assist Reduced, Drive with Care" warning appears without notice, and the wheel turns heavy and stiff. Along with it, the coolant gauge drops to zero or flatlines, the air conditioning cuts out and the cooling fan runs loud. Shops read code P0128 and replace the thermostat and coolant temperature sensor, but some owners say the warning comes back. Two crashes with five injuries appear here: one loss of control on a curve and one where the car sped up and the brakes didn't stop it.

  • Brakes122 crashes

The electric parking brake locks up on its own or won't release, and in some cases owners are stranded or need a tow. One lockup burned out the actuator. Other reports describe a StabiliTrak fault that set off the ABS at highway speed, fixed with a wheel sensor and brake control module, and a rear pad separating from its backing plate. Of two crashes, one involved sudden acceleration with brakes that didn't stop the car and four injuries. The other was a rollaway after a "Shift to Park" fault, which several other reports also describe.

  • Engine6No crashes

The thermostat or its housing fails, often sticking open, and that sets off a reduced steering assist warning, shuts off the air conditioning and runs the fan hard. One owner had the housing replaced twice in 3 years and was told emissions coverage includes the thermostat but not the housing. One report covers a torque converter failure that led to a transmission replacement, with hard shifting and no-starts. The rest describe the "Shift to Park" fault, which keeps the car from shutting off and drains the battery.

  • Suspension4No crashes

Rear suspension links wear or break. One rear lower control arm snapped in half at parking-lot speed and turned the wheel sharply. Rust at the break suggested the crack had been spreading for a while. Another car failed state inspection with worn rear control arm bushings that moved by hand at 41,633 miles, and the shop called this common. Toe links broke while driving in a third case, and the driver nearly lost control.

  • Stability control4No crashes

None of these reports actually describe a stability control fault. All four describe the car not recognizing Park. The "Shift to Park" message stays up, the car stays in accessory mode with the dash lit, and the doors won't lock. Drivers restart and run through the gears many times to clear it, in one case for an hour. Left alone, the fault drains the battery, and owners worry the car could move on its own. It comes and goes at first, then gets worse.

  • Wheels and tires3No crashes

Tires wear out early. One set was worn out at 23,700 miles. On another car, the front tread tore and gouged even with regular rotation and no accident or off-road use. One complaint filed here is really a body leak: water came in through the rear windows, door panels and headliner after rain on a car with 8,000 miles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Acadia owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
When I park my 2018 GMC Acadia, my infotainment screen states the following warning: "SWIFT TO PARK", but I have already put my car in PARK. This warning started appearing around 28,000 miles; my currect mileage on my Acadia is 28,379 miles. I have checked if there are any recalls on this issue, but found none, but this issue started appearing in the 2017 models

TransmissionCrash reported
Sold 2018 GMC Acadia by LEE GMC in auburn. Acadias shift to park was defective, dealership replaced before sale did not disclose, shift to park and transmission malfunctions occurred. I returned Acadia to the dealership several times and they would never properly fix or address my concerns now my vehicle is unsafe to drive. I have documentation to support the claims in my letter, I can send as well if you’d like. Thank you Will send attachment

Electrical
Had to replace the shifter, harness, and parking assist module to the tune of $1569.00! When it was put into park the system would not acknowledge it was in park...therefore I could not lock the vehicle and an alarm kept going off. My Acadia only has 12,000 miles on it...NO excuse for having to replace those parts with or without a warranty! Dealership said I am not the only one this has happened to...they have replaced a number of them!

Electrical
Shift to park error notice comes up on dash when car it turned off and in park. Car is clearly in park, but error code “shift to park” appears on screen. Beeping occurs until car is turned off and shifted to R or D and then shifted back to park and turned off. This error happens several times a week, including twice today 6/22/24. I have to restart my vehicle and shift it to R or D then back to park SEVERAL times before the error is cleared.

Steering
Battery saver ignited comes on and and the entire dash flickers and turns off ! This happened in a middle of an intersection and I could move my car. We jumped it and went to the nearest auto zone replaced the battery . It was pulling 89 amps . The next day it popped up again and we replaced the alternator. Upon replacing this there was oil everywhere! And we don’t know where it is coming from . Now shift into part light comes on !

Steering
" steering assistant reduced, drive care" " power steering ,drive with care". My car has been properly maintained, and has no issues, but this messages that keep coming up out of nowhere. And when it comes out my steering wheel gets very hard and stiff, causing me to almost get in accident in highway. This is definitely a factory defect that needs to be recalled and taken care of.

Brakes
I have a 2018 GMC Acadia that is now displaying " shift to park " while the vehicle is in park. Upon extensive research I see GMC did issue a recall however, my particular VIN was not included. Its NOW displaying the error message which would lead me to believe it IS part of the recall. I called my local GMC dealership (Langhorne, PA.) and they said this was not covered since my VIN was not issues a recall.

Brakes
Cars emergency brake locks up for no reason. Happened on several occasions but last instance burned out actuator and locked up calipers from just sitting on a hill with foot on brake. This is a huge safety issue when it locks up for no reason on a road. It’s stranded me at least twice because it’s hard to undue.

How the 2018 compares with other Acadia years

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2018 has the most owner complaints of the 7 Acadia years we cover, about 5.5 times the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

2018 Average of other years
  • Transmission1489
  • Electrical6712
  • Steering206
  • Brakes1210
  • Engine65
  • Suspension40

Where the 2018 fits in the Acadia's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2018 is the second model year of the Acadia's second generation (2017–2023).

GMC updated the Acadia for 2020, so a 2018 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2020 (not on a 2018)

  • New exterior styling
  • Revised infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • New alloy wheel options
  • Introduction of AT4 trim

Recalls to confirm (2)
