Which Acadia is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 GMC Acadia. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD24–25 mpg
3.6L 6-cylAWD, FWD21–22 mpg
  • The 2022 GMC Acadia was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Acadia that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 GMC Acadia, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical10No crashes

A cooling fault leads the reports. The temperature gauge stops reading, the fan roars for 5 to 15 minutes after shutdown, and warnings about reduced driver or steering assist appear. Camera failures come next, with backup and surround views turning grainy, flickering, or going black. Owners also report dash and infotainment screens blacking out several times a week, a blind spot monitor that misses cars, and locks cycling while driving. Some cars shut off suddenly on the highway with no warning. In one case the radiator fan quit and the engine nearly overheated.

  • Engine5No crashes

Stalling at speed is the most serious report. One car quit at 75 miles per hour, and the dealer said a fuel system module needed replacement. An electronic thermostat failure also shows up. The temperature gauge drops to cold, a steering assist warning appears, and the air conditioning stops working. Some owners describe repeat repairs for an engine leak and the purge pump. A dealer traced one front exhaust pipe problem to a special coverage program that does not include this model year. Another car had a check engine light and wheels that felt unbalanced at about 18,000 miles.

  • Fuel system4No crashes

The fuel pump control module fails and strands the car. Some cars crank but won't start. Others buck as if the engine is cutting in and out, then stall in traffic and won't restart. Owners report towing and stalls in the roadway. Before one failure, warning lights flashed and the fuel gauge showed the wrong amount. A separate check engine fault was traced to the evaporative emission purge pump, and the replacement part was on back order.

  • Steering3No crashes

The "steering assist reduced" warning appears together with a temperature gauge stuck on cold, a check engine light, and a fan that blows hard after shutdown. Owners connect it to a thermostat or temperature sensor fault, the same pattern reported under other headings, not to a failure in the steering itself. One owner says the trouble began after 60,000 miles and brought hard shifting, no cold air from the AC, and stability and traction control warnings.

  • Seat belts3No crashes

Rear seat belts lock up partway out, so passengers have to let them retract and pull again. In one report, a retractor would not lock while a child seat was being installed, which left the belt loose. Another describes a buckle receiver that jams and won't latch. One new vehicle arrived with a second-row belt latch missing. Most of these reports come from families with young children.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The transmission can fail to engage park at shutdown, and the car drifts forward. One owner reports this at about 22,000 miles. Another failure leaves the car unable to shift or go faster than about 18 mph while the engine revs and the dash shows only L. That car needed a transmission rebuild and waited weeks for parts. A third owner had front-end noise and sputtering that the dealer blamed on transmission bearings, with no warning light.

  • Brakes21 crash

Smoke filled the cabin during braking, and flames came from the front brake rotors at 15,000 miles. Afterward the unoccupied car rolled down a slope while in park and hit a tree. The cause was never determined. In the other report, the front brakes and rotors failed soon after purchase, with damaged linings and an abnormal noise. Only two complaints are on file, but one involves both a fire and a crash.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

The automatic emergency braking can trigger with no hazard ahead. One owner reports it nearly stopping the car in the middle of an intersection during left turns at 4-way stops, then chose to drive with the system off. In the other report, a "Front Assist Blocked" message pointed to a failed camera at about 73,000 miles. The fault came back an hour after the camera was replaced, and coverage was disputed.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Acadia owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
My Acadia has had a stuttering problem and we have taken it to the dealership many times. They finally changed the torque converter but that didn’t fix it. Now today (4/15/25) I got home and I was getting a steering assist reduced error code and then when I turned my car off the fan went as high as it could and wouldn’t turn off. Finally after a bit of time it turned off. I got my car 4/28/22

Electrical
I was driving on the highway with my kids and my car suddenly shuts off. There was no warning messages or other symptoms of the problem... no signs! This took place on February 25, 2024. It was towed and taken to the GMC dealership (coral springs) for 3 weeks now.

Engine
UNKNOWN After diagnosis at the GMC dealership they stated that it is same issue as released in the following: Special Coverage Adjustments: N212356540 Front Exhaust Pipe N222385510 Special Coverage Front Exhaust Pipe However they CURRENTLY do not cover our GMC Acadia Model year 2022

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Engine
Electronic thermostat fails. Which causes steering assistance reduced drive with care to illuminate. Temperature gauge drops to cold. Air conditioning no longer operates.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Fuel system
My engine light came on, I took it to the service center where I purchase the vehicle. They state it is a evaporative emission canister purge pump. They state the part is on back order due to many vehicles having the same faulty part. I contacted GMC, they state the part is not available at this time. Secondly the park assist was recalled to be fixed. That part is also on back order and not available at this time.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Steering
I have had multiple sensor issues with my Acadia since reaching 60000 miles. Currently, there is a thermostat sensor causing hard shifting, No cold air blowing from the AC, stabilitrack, traction control, steering assist reduced and fan running after turning off. I would not report it but I am in a facebook group where MULTIPLE people are reporting having the same issue in their Acadia's.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Steering
Engine light warning displayed, temp gauge on display needle remains far left C and doesn’t deviate from that position, steering assist warning displayed, and fan runs for a few moments after the engine is shut off.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any GMC dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 22V446000Fuel systemJun 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022 Cadillac XT5, XT6, and GMC Acadia All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles. The fuel tank rollover valve may not provide a proper seal in the event of a rollover crash.

Risk: A fuel tank rollover valve that does not properly seal can result in a fuel leak during a rollover crash, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the fuel tank and replace the fuel tank shell if the rollover valve is found to be dislodged or missing, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 27, 2022. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N222366070.
