Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Genesis G80, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes21 crash

Brakes fail to stop the car at parking speed in a crash report, and the car lurches forward into a fixed post. The other complaint concerns dealer work on the ABS module that consisted of swapping fuses for a higher amp rating, which the owner doubts fixes a defective module. With only 2 reports there is no broad pattern, but the crash report describes a loss of braking at low speed.

  • Electrical2No crashes

The battery goes dead and needs repeated jump starts, with battery replacements reported more than once in a year. Related symptoms include odd noises when a power source is attached, a car that runs hot with no warning lights, and crackling audio over the USB phone connection. A second pattern involves rodents chewing through the soy-based wire coating. That damage turns on the check engine light, can reach the starter wiring, and needs repeat repairs, in one case at about 12,000 miles.

  • Wheels and tires2No crashes

Sidewalls fail, leading to flats and blowouts. Reports describe holes and bubbles in the sidewall, plus blowouts and cuts after pothole hits, sometimes on several tires at once. The tires named are Continental ProContact Rx in both the 245/40R19 front and 275/35R19 rear sizes. Failures show up early, including at about 11,000 miles. A sudden blowout while driving is a safety risk, and one report describes replacing both front tires after finding damage on each.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints G80 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
It is dead everyday and I have to jump it I noticed when I attach a power source it makes very odd noises. I feel the current recall you have on the g80 2020 may be the issue. It runs extremely hot wit no warning lights showing. I have had a lot of brake dust and the car is hot fast. Also issues with usb and when connected to phone it sound like crackling and volume sounds odd unless I unplug and replug. Replaced battery twice in a year
