Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Genesis G80, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical8No crashes

Recall repairs that cannot be completed make up most of this category. Owners got recall notices, but the repair part was not available, and several say the wait has gone on far too long. One owner stopped driving the car while waiting. The air conditioning is the main actual failure. It stops cooling after a while, blows hot from some vents, or shuts down after several hours, and one owner hit this at 35k miles, out of warranty. Another report describes the AGM battery going flat after the car sits for as little as 24 hours.

  • Engine4No crashes

The oil pressure sensor fails, and repairs cost a lot. Owners report bills from $1000+ to $2500, with one failure at 41,000 miles. Owners say the 10 yr/100,000 mile warranty does not cover the sensor because it counts as an electrical part. One owner says that after a recall relay kit was installed, the engine idles rough, stalls, feels sluggish, and surges on acceleration, and that the dealer found nothing wrong. One complaint reports the engine undercover missing from the car.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Most complaints here are about a recall with no fix available yet. Owners say the dealer did not have the part, and one owner learned of the recall from the news instead of from a notice. The one actual failure report describes "ghost braking." During a gradual stop, the car applies more braking than the driver is asking for, and the owner says it happens every time. No crashes or injuries are reported in this category.

  • Acceleration and cruise control22 crashes

Unintended acceleration is the problem in both reports, and both ended in a crash with an injury. In one, the gas pedal stuck while pulling into a parking space at about 5 mph. The car jumped a curb and hit a wall, and the engine kept revving until it was shut off. In the other, the car sped up on its own right after a collision and would not stop until the driver ran it over a hedge. Neither owner knows what caused it.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints G80 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The AC system on this car, and seems series of years is widely known to have major issue, as is the case with mine. I'm having issues with the dealer telling me the car is out of warranty 35k miles, 2019 year. Based on researching and talking with other owners they are also having similar issues, AC not cooling well, hot on some vents, works for a time period then stops, etc.

Engine
Oil pressured sensor went bad $2500 fix from dealer. In Korea this is a recall. The Genesis forums are full of complaints regarding same issue. The factory should cover this but the 10 year 100000 mile warranty does not cover it since it is considered an electrical part.

Brakes
Unkown. My genesis G80 sport "ghost brskes". While driving all is call and fine. But when I initiate the brakes to come to a full stop gradually.... I will feel the vehicle apply extra brakes than which I am apply. And this happens consistently.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Acceleration and cruise controlCrash reported
While entering a parking space at approximately 5 mph the gas pedal stuck and accelerated causing the car to jump curb and hit a wall causing severe damage to car and driver. The engine was still rerving and had to be shut down after the incident.
