Which Avalon is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Toyota Avalon. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.5L 6-cylGasFWD26 mpg
2.5L 4-cylHybridFWD44 mpg
  • The 2020 Toyota Avalon was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Avalon that averages well under the EPA 26 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Toyota Avalon, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Fuel system5No crashes

Gasoline backs up out of the filler neck during refueling, sometimes without the nozzle shutting off, and spills onto the ground and the person at the pump. Reports describe this happening again and again, even with a low tank, and dealers sometimes find nothing wrong. Spilled fuel is a fire risk. Other complaints describe a rough idle with a check engine light and evaporative emission and lean-running codes, hard starting after a fill-up, and hesitation that feels like an oncoming stall in turns and city driving. A stall while driving raises crash risk. Several owners report waiting on dealers for a fuel pump fix.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Avalon owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Fuel system
When refueling vehicle, gasoline backs up immediately, doesn't shut off gas hose and pours out all over vehicle and feet of person refueling. Today is the 4th time it's happened. It's been to Gettle Toyota of Lakewood in Bradenton FL for this exact complaint and was told there's nothing wrong with the vehicle.

Where the 2020 fits in the Avalon's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the second model year of the Avalon's fifth generation (2019–2023).

Toyota updated the Avalon for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.
